Abstract

This paper seeks to discuss how the Qur’an deal with the question of cultural differences and diversity. It argues that although the Qur’an and Islam both originated from the Arabic culture (maddatul Arab), it does not mean the holy book does not allow “other” cultures and traditions. Instead, it contains values beyond Arabic materials. This means Islam recognizes the diversity of cultures and traditions in society. Moreover, Islam expresses its universal values by exposingits wisdom in dealing with cultural differences and diversity.

Abstract

The Qur’an is the highest law book used to understand Prophet Muhammad’s prophetic mission. Therefore, the social conditions of the community need to be analyzed before and after the treatise to obtain an extraordinary level of artistic appreciation. This paper limits the study of poetry and fine arts as a branch of philosophy, using a historical-analytical approach following the shift theory of Talal Asad’s model. The use of this approach, from the period of the qabla risalah (before the arrival of Islam) to fathu Makkah (conquest of Mecca), led to changes in the form of genre and function of art; a shift from pragmatism-hedonism to idealismpost-impressionism for poetry, and from sacred realism-naturalism to desacral ornamental-cubism for the fine arts.

Abstract

The paradigm of fiqh that is currently developing has not been able to answer the demands of sustainable development that has become a global agenda. The weakness of the fiqh perspective is because it uses the perspective of a third person who positions Al-Quran as the object of interpretation. This paper uses a second-person perspective and social system paradigm. These two perspectives form the fiqh paradigm of sustainable development. Based on this paradigm, the problems that become the priorities of sustainable development are understood as the excesses of dominating cognitive (subjective) relations that encourage humans to be individualistic and materialistic. This paper offers the importance of trans-cognitive (trans-subjective) relations that control recognition (subjective) relations and cognitive relations. Furthermore, in trans-cognitive relations, Al-Quran is positioned as a communicative act (speech act) of God to humans.

Abstract

In line with development dynamics, environmental degradation continues and threatens development sustainability. The concept of sustainable development with economic, social, and environmental pillars requires actualization across aspects. Amongst the important aspects are culture and religion which is fundamentally inherent in every human being to drive behavior. The values of longstanding Javanese culture emphasize environmental conservation teachings, including Hamemayu Hayuning Bawono, Hamengku Buwono philosophy, Satriya attitude, and the forecasts saying kali ilang kedunge, pasar ilang kumandange, wong wadon ilang wirange, and wong lanang ilang kawibawane. Ecoculture actualization requires several strategies. First, the government policy should further consider environmental dynamics. Second, earth-related and environmental education should be intensified formally, informally, and non-formally. Third, the society should be informed and invited to actualize local wisdoms. Islamic values should be further optimized as a fundamental strategy in environmental conservation. Islam views nature as Allah’s blessing, and the logical consequence is being grateful by continuously preserving it. Several important measures can promote ecological piety. First, Islamic education curriculum in boarding schools, madrasahs, Islamic forums, and formal schools should reinforce environmental theology and its applications. Second, religious organizations should facilitate intensive communication among stakeholders. Third, commitment is proven through tangible actions.

Abstract

Serat Centhini is often described as the encyclopedia of Java. The poem was indeed written at the beginning of the 19th century, but the “plot” takes place at the 17th century, a pivotal time in Central Java where Islam spreads and settles, while the older cults are still alive. Serat Centhini acts as a colossal cultural laboratory which tests the ancestral knowledge and traditions in the light of the new science of Islam. Will these knowledge and traditions become obsolete and disappear on their own? Will they persist because of their universal foundations, or because of their deep roots in localwisdom, or their capacity to adjust and embrace a new form? Will they enter into conflict or go underground? The experimentation works two ways: will the new science of Islam be flexible enough to accommodate the ancestral world view in its modernity? This paper seeks to present three brilliant cultural strategies successfully put to test in the Centhini laboratory, in their ability to transcend time, and embrace social and religious transformations: green local wisdom, the duty to remember, and recognition of Beauty.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the integration of Islamic values and local culture of Kampar that is wrapped up as cultural fiqh in the Balimau Kasai tradition. The tradition of Balimau Kasai is a tradition of welcoming the holy month of Ramadan by bathing with traditional ingredients and gathering at the river’s edge. The found four dimensions of integration of Islamic values and the local culture of Kampar in the Balimau Kasai tradition, namely: (1) the Balimau Kasai is held by the Kampar community as a form of gratitude of being able to meet with the month of Ramadan, (2) the Balimau Kasai is a form of joy and happiness with the coming of Ramadan, (3) the Balimau Kasai is a means of cleaning and purifying thebody and spiritually, (4) the Balimau Kasai is a place to establish harmonious relationship (silaturrahim), and (5) the Balimau Kasai is a moment to forgive each other.
