Abstract

The study of the Qur’an in contemporary tafsir discourse demonstrates a significant methodological evolution. One of the prominent figures in this renewal is Muhammad Abdullah Darraz through his seminal work An-Naba’u al-‘Aẓīm Naẓaratun Jadīdatun fī al-Qur’ān. This article aims to examine Darraz’s exegetical thought and methodology, particularly his use of thematic (maudhu‘i) and rational (bi al-ra’yi) approaches in interpreting the content of Surah al-Baqarah. The study reveals that Darraz was not only a Qur’anic exegete but also a multidisciplinary thinker who integrated ethics, logic, and the concept of i‘jāz (inimitability) into his interpretation. By emphasizing the linguistic miracle and thematic coherence of the Qur’an, Darraz presented a form of tafsir that holds both intellectual and spiritual value. His contribution to modern Qur’anic literature serves as a valuable methodological model that bridges classical scholarship and contemporary challenges.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji posisi dan peran hermeneutika dalam tafsir al-Qur’an kontemporer di Indonesia dengan menyoroti aspek integrasi, kritik, serta relevansinya dalam menjawab problematika sosial. Hermeneutika dipahami sebagai pendekatan metodologis yang memungkinkan terjadinya dialog antara teks wahyu dan konteks kekinian, sehingga penafsiran al-Qur’an tidak bersifat statis, tetapi dinamis dan kontekstual. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kepustakaan (library research) terhadap berbagai literatur tafsir klasik dan kontemporer. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa hermeneutika telah berkontribusi dalam memperluas cakupan tafsir dengan menghadirkan pendekatan yang lebih adaptif terhadap isu-isu modern, seperti pluralisme, gender, lingkungan, dan keadilan sosial. Dalam konteks Indonesia, pendekatan ini tampak dalam model tafsir kontekstual, khususnya melalui pendekatan ma’nā-cum-maghzā, yang mengintegrasikan unsur teks, penafsir, dan audiens. Namun demikian, hermeneutika juga menuai kritik dari kalangan ulama tradisional yang menilai pendekatan ini berpotensi menggeser otoritas wahyu dan membuka ruang subjektivitas berlebihan dalam penafsiran. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini menegaskan pentingnya pendekatan integratif yang menggabungkan hermeneutika dengan metodologi tafsir klasik. Integrasi tersebut memungkinkan terciptanya penafsiran yang tetap berlandaskan pada otoritas teks, sekaligus responsif terhadap dinamika sosial kontemporer. Dengan demikian, hermeneutika tidak diposisikan sebagai pengganti tafsir klasik, melainkan sebagai instrumen pelengkap yang memperkaya khazanah keilmuan Islam dan menjadikan al-Qur’an tetap relevan dalam menjawab tantangan zaman.

Abstract

This research is motivated by a highly significant debate regarding the nature of ruh (spirit/soul) in the Qur'an, which frequently falls into logical fallacies, being regarded merely as a divine mystery, or suffering from fatal misconceptions between the meanings of life (soul) and revelation in various classical and modern exegeses. Therefore, this study aims to map out the comprehensive understanding of the meaning of ruh in the Qur'an in detail, emphasizing the divine and human dimensions to avoid a partial understanding. To achieve this objective, this library research applies Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic approach to the Qur'an. The analysis is specifically designed to explore basic and relational meanings through syntagmatic and paradigmatic analyses to reconstruct the Qur'anic worldview (Weltanschauung) regarding the term. The results indicate that the word ruh is repeated 24 times in the Qur'an and originates from the root word ra-wa-ha, which means to go or to move, and shares a close semantic relationship with the word rih (wind). Relationally, the meaning of ruh is classified into two major categories: the divine dimension, manifested as revelation, the absolute affair of Allah, and the embodiment of Angel Jibril; and the human dimension, acting as an essential spiritual element that provides life, inner consciousness, and morality to the human physical body. Through paradigmatic analysis, the concept of ruh is proven to interact dynamically in shaping a holistic structure of human identity through its functional relationships with the terms nafs (soul), wahyu (revelation), qalb (heart), ‘aql (intellect), and hayah (life).

Abstract

Qualitative research in contemporary Islamic education studies frequently encounters methodological challenges related to the validity and credibility of research findings. This study aims to analyze the role of triangulation as a verification strategy for enhancing data trustworthiness in qualitative research within the field of Islamic education. Employing a meta-synthesis approach to twenty-eight qualitative studies published between 2015 and 2024, this research examines the application of four forms of triangulation—source, methodological, investigator, and theoretical triangulation—within the context of Islamic education studies across educational institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia. The findings indicate that methodological and source triangulation are the most widely employed strategies; however, theoretical triangulation significantly enhances the depth of interpretation in hermeneutic and text-based studies. The study also identifies a critical gap in the implementation of investigator triangulation due to institutional resource limitations. The practical implications of this research include the recommendation of an integrative triangulation framework that can be adopted by Islamic education researchers, particularly in the contexts of curriculum development, pedagogical interpretation, and Islamic values-based character education. This study contributes to the discourse on qualitative research methodology in Islamic studies by affirming that credibility is not merely a technical procedure but an epistemological commitment that must be embedded throughout the entire research design
