Abstract

This study analyzes the performance of the West Bandung Regency contingent at the Pekan Olahraga Provinsi (PORPROV) XIV Jawa Barat. It specifically focuses on how the strategic integration of music selection and thematic presentation might improve the overall performance. The marching band sport involves teams competing in four competitions. The competitions include Lomba Baris Berbaris (LBB) Marching Competition, Lomba Unjuk Gelar (LUG), Lomba Berbaris Jarak Pendek / Short Distance Marching Competition (LBJP), and Lomba Ketahanan dan Ketepatan Berbaris (LKKB) / The Endurance and Accuracy Marching Competition. In order to effectively engage audiences and judges, bands must enhance and perfect their aesthetic and thematic techniques as the level of competition increases. The study utilized a qualitative research methodology, which involved active involvement and careful observation for analysis. We participated in marching band activities and closely observed practices and performances in order to acquire a thorough comprehension of the aesthetic and conceptual components. Data were gathered via observations, and discussions and examined using an analytical framework rooted in the literature on music aesthetics and performance art. This framework evaluated the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and visual depiction. The results emphasize the significance of carefully choosing music, maintaining theme consistency, and using visual components to provide a captivating performance. The topic chosen by the West Bandung contingent, "Flight and Movement," together with their smart selection of music, showcased the ability of thoughtful curation and dynamic arrangements to amplify the story and emotional resonance. The utilization of intensive rehearsals and coordinated visual elements had a pivotal role in attaining elevated levels of audience engagement and competitive triumph.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the acoustic characteristics of Gamelan music performances in various settings, explicitly emphasizing the disparity between enclosed auditoriums and open spaces. Given the growing frequency of Gamelan performances in varied contexts, the comprehension of how diverse environments impact acoustic qualities is of utmost importance to enhance audience experience and safeguard the authenticity of traditional musical forms. The significance of this study arises from the increasing prevalence of Gamelan music in non-traditional contexts, such as outdoor festivals, prompting inquiries into the variations in acoustic properties across different situations. This research endeavor aims to fill the existing gap in knowledge by undertaking a qualitative examination of acoustic phenomena in enclosed and unobstructed environments. The research presented in this study is notable for its extensive investigation into acoustic phenomena across many settings, considering several aspects, including sound reflection, absorption, and reverberation. Qualitative analytical techniques were applied to evaluate the acoustic characteristics within each respective setting by utilizing a comprehensive examination of pertinent scholarly works pertaining to acoustics and Gamelan music. The findings suggest that closed auditoriums, which have controlled sound distribution and little interference, exhibit unique acoustic characteristics compared to open spaces. In open spaces, sound propagation is affected by ambient elements and the audience's presence. The research underscores the significance of architectural design in influencing acoustic surroundings and the necessity for flexible performance venues that can handle the intricacies of Gamelan music. This study makes a valuable contribution to the existing body of knowledge by providing a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of contextual elements on the acoustic characteristics of Gamelan music. The findings of this research have implications for the improvement of performance venues and the promotion of audience involvement in various contexts.

Abstract

Music and architecture are part of the arts, which are artistic and natural human expressions. A work of art cannot be separated from several internal or external influences. Influences that come from outside or external factors include humans, space and time. Music and architecture influence both, and the connections and aspects between the two are things that certainly have a relationship. Music and architecture have similarities in that both have rules that work in harmony—sensitivity to aesthetic principles: harmony, rhythm, balance, and emphasis. The psychological impression of colour, materials and construction also complements the realization of a complete and integral design. Music can be visualized in other forms of art, namely architecture, a field of art with a wide range of scientific fields. This article will examine the relationship between the art of music and other arts, namely architecture, including its interrelated elements and a description and analysis of the transformation of music into architectural form in Villa Isola Bandung. The discussion of this problem will use a descriptive method with a deductive approach, namely taking a case study and analyzing it in general, specifically related to theories related to music and architecture.

This research used a qualitative analytical methodology to investigate the structural components of the song, encompassing its introduction, verses, pre-chorus, chorus, instrumental section, and outro. The analysis utilizes theoretical frameworks from prominent works in the field of film music studies, such as Claudia Gorbman's theory on narrative film music, Kathryn Kalinak's observations on the purposes of film music, and David Neumeyer and James Buhler's debates on the emotional influence of soundtracks. The result suggests that "Himawari No Yakusoku" successfully utilizes important musical methods, including key selection, polyrhythm, thematic recapitulation, and harmonic resolution, to correspond with the emotional and narrative progressions of the film. The song begins with a warm tone in the key of Bb, the verses feature a polyrhythm that adds emotional complexity, the pre-chorus creates anticipation, and the chorus serves as a distinctive leitmotif. The instrumental portion adds introspective complexity, while the outro provides a gratifying conclusion. These features collectively improve the film's narrative, showcasing the song's essential function in influencing the audience's emotional and cognitive reactions.

Abstract

This study examines transforming Barasuara's "Guna Manusia" from a folk-rock song into a brass band arrangement. It analyzes its cultural and sociological ramifications using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction. The project aims to investigate the impact of song adaptation on audience perception, involvement, and awareness of environmental issues. The research utilizes a comprehensive technique that combines descriptive analysis and literature review. The process of descriptive analysis entails the examination of YouTube videos showcasing both the original and brass band renditions of "Guna Manusia" to comprehend the musical alterations and gauge the audience's reactions. A literature review is placed on findings within appropriate theoretical frameworks and examines prior research on music adaptation and cultural replication. The analysis demonstrates that by converting "Guna Manusia" into a brass band arrangement, its cultural importance is enhanced, and its accessibility is broadened to a broad spectrum of audiences. Descriptive analysis reveals that the brass band adaption successfully communicates the song's environmental message through instrumental expression. Bourdieu's theory demonstrates how cultural reproduction impacts the adaptation process and affects the audience's reception. The study highlights the educational and societal significance of employing music to promote environmental advocacy. It showcases how Barasuara's rendition of "Guna Manusia" actively helps increase awareness and encourage transformative change within society. The research offers unique insights into the profound impact of music and its role in tackling urgent social problems.
