Abstract

Contemporary Islamic jurisprudence faces the enduring challenge of reconciling the authority of the Prophetic tradition (Sunnah) with the evolving realities of the modern world. This article examines this problem through an analysis of the systematic hadith hermeneutics developed by the twentieth-century Indonesian scholar Tengku Muhammad Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy. Using a qualitative hermeneutical approach, the study analyzes his principal works, Pokok-Pokok Ilmu Dirayah Hadis and Falsafah Hukum Islam, to reconstruct his framework for distinguishing between legislative (tashri‘) and non-legislative (ghayr tashri‘) hadith. The findings show that this distinction rests on the foundational premise of the Prophet’s dual capacities as a divine messenger (rasūl) and a human being (basyar). This conceptual division delineates a universally binding domain of law, primarily in matters of worship, from a non-binding sphere of worldly affairs in which human reason, empirical knowledge, and contextual understanding play a central role. The paradigmatic examples of the command to pray and the incident of date-palm pollination illustrate the practical application of this binary framework. The study concludes that Ash-Shiddieqy’s hermeneutical model constitutes a coherent and systematic methodology that integrates contextual reasoning within Islamic jurisprudence and serves as a principled framework for achieving the higher objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah).

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology offers new opportunities to improve human life, particularly in education. However, many individuals with visual impairments still face barriers in accessing technological tools, especially for learning and interpreting the Qur’an. The Nurul application, an AI-based innovation, was developed to assist blind individuals in Indonesia in enhancing independence and improving Qur’anic learning, particularly in understanding tafsir (interpretation). This study aims to describe the role of the Nurul application in supporting Qur’anic and tafsir learning among blind students at SLB A YPAB Surabaya, to examine how its features improve accessibility, and to evaluate the validity of its Qur’anic interpretations. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, documentation, and literature review. The analysis employed intertextual theory to assess the accuracy of the tafsir content. Findings reveal that Nurul provides interactive, user-friendly features that effectively support blind users in religious education. Key functions, such as Qur’an mode, Magic Mirror, and facial expression reader, help students engage with learning more independently and meaningfully. Observations and interviews indicate that the application effectively aids users in understanding Qur’anic verses and interpretations with sufficient accuracy. However, further improvements are needed to enhance tafsir validity and overall usability. This study contributes to the advancement of AI-based educational technology that promotes inclusivity in religious learning for the visually impaired.

Abstract

This study arises from the urgency to reexamine the authenticity of the Qur'an in a historical context, amid debates among mainstream Islam, critical Islam, and Orientalist scholarship. The long history of the codification of the Qur'an, which involved the processes of revelation, memorization, and text standardization, became the basis for the emergence of two primary schools of thought: mainstream Islam, which affirms the purity of revelation through mutawatir transmission and divine protection, and critical Islam, which highlights the historical, social, and rational dimensions of the codification process without denying the sacredness of the text. Using a qualitative research method grounded in a literature review and historical and comparative analysis, this study finds that the debate over the authenticity of the Qur'an is not merely a conflict between faith and rationality, but rather a productive dialectic among faith, history, and scientific methodology. The results of the study show that both mainstream Islam and critical Islam, despite their differences in epistemological approaches, are essentially striving to maintain the integrity of revelation; one through strengthening theological aspects, and the other through rational and scientific historical verification.

Abstract

This article investigates the enduring and multifaceted interpretive conflict surrounding the Qur’anic verse of khums (Q. 8:41), a foundational text for Islamic law, theology, and concepts of authority. This study employs a diachronic, historical-comparative analysis of a textual corpus from classical Islamic exegesis (tafsir) to contemporary scholarly and ideological works, including influential modern Indonesian commentators. The findings reveal a multi-layered evolution of interpretation. What began as a formative legal debate over the term ghanīma hardened into a fundamental Sunni-Shi'i schism rooted in competing political theologies of the Caliphate and the Imamate. Within Sunnism, a structured pluralism emerged, with the four primary legal schools issuing distinct rulings grounded in their respective hermeneutical principles. Beyond jurisprudence, the verse was also appropriated for non-legal ends: as an allegory for the soul's journey by Sufi mystics and as a tool of statecraft by the Ottoman and Safavid empires. In the modern era, thinkers from traditionalist, modernist, and Islamist backgrounds—such as Hamka, Quraish Shihab, and Sayyid Qutb—continue to reinterpret the verse in response to the challenges of the nation-state and contemporary ideologies. This research provides a comprehensive historical map of a single verse’s interpretive life, demonstrating how a sacred text functions as a dynamic mirror reflecting the evolution of Islamic law, identity, and thought from the classical age to the present day.

Abstract

This study discusses theological and epistemological debates on muhkam and mutasyabih verses in Qur’anic studies, which, since the classical period, have centered on the tension between tafwidh and ta’wil. These debates arise from different approaches to understanding verses whose meanings are considered clear or ambiguous. The research is motivated by the need to reexamine this issue within the context of contemporary Indonesian Qur’anic interpretation, focusing on two influential mufassirs: Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar and Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Mishbah. These works represent moral-spiritual and rational-linguistic interpretive tendencies, respectively. The study employs a qualitative library research method, drawing on primary sources such as tafsir literature and ʿulum al-Qur’an texts, as well as secondary sources including academic books and scientific articles. Data are analyzed using content analysis to identify key interpretive patterns related to muhkam and mutasyabih verses. The findings indicate that the muhkam–mutasyabih debate is rooted in human limitations in comprehending the language and structure of revelation. Discussions on muqatta‘ah letters emphasize the transcendence of divine revelation, while theological analysis shows that mutasyabihat verses contribute to the development of reasoning and spirituality in Islam. Both Hamka and Quraish Shihab offer moderate syntheses that balance reason and faith, affirm tawhid, and maintain the relevance of Qur’anic interpretation in modern Islamic thought.
