Abstract

The development of digital technology has globally transformed religious practices, including in Indonesia, by creating a hybrid space between online and offline activities known as digital religion. This study aims to analyze how the transformation of religious practices through social media affects the understanding, practice, and religious identity, particularly among young Indonesian Muslims. Using a literature review method and qualitative content analysis, this research examines various theoretical and empirical references related to digital religion, employing a conceptual framework that integrates the theories of networked religion (Campbell) and mediatization (Hjarvard). The findings show that social media has become a key platform in transforming religious practices, giving rise to new forms of religious authority such as "celebrity preachers" (ustadz selebgram), while also fostering hybrid religious identities that blend tradition with personal interpretation. Religious organizations like NU and Muhammadiyah have successfully adapted by utilizing digital platforms, while pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) have begun integrating digital literacy into their curricula. However, the study also identifies challenges such as the superficiality of religious understanding due to viral content and the potential for radicalization through social media algorithms. Theoretically, these findings enrich the understanding of digital religion by emphasizing the dimension of locality, while practically, they suggest the need for the development of digital religious literacy and adaptive communication strategies for religious institutions. The study concludes that digital religion in Indonesia creates a new space for negotiation between tradition and modernity, requiring a thoughtful approach to ensure that technological transformation deepens rather than diminishes spirituality.

Abstract

This article proposes a new methodological approach in hadith studies by integrating Imre Lakatos's research programme model into Islamic scholarship. This approach emerges in response to the dominant normative tendency in hadith studies, which often results in stagnation when confronting contemporary socio-cultural dynamics. Utilizing the hard core as the inviolable foundation of divine revelation, the protective belt as a flexible interpretative space, and the series of theories as the progressive development of hadith thought, the Imre Lakatos model enables a scientific reconstruction of hadith understanding that remains grounded in textual authority while remaining open to renewal. This study employs a literature review method, drawing from philosophical, methodological, and contemporary Islamic sources. The findings indicate that Lakatos’s methodology not only offers a strong epistemological foundation for hadith studies but also provides a conceptual instrument for building critical, rational, and context-sensitive Islamic research programmes. Accordingly, this article contributes to the advancement of Islamic studies that are more reflective, adaptive, and relevant to the challenges of the modern era.

Abstract

One of the important things in the tradition of shaking hands is understanding its context. Some regions have specific meanings in carrying it out. The purpose of this study is to determine the value of the tradition of shaking hands using ethical philosophy research (Living Philosophy). In addition, this research is examined because some people view it from the perspective of religious doctrine. This study uses qualitative research with descriptive-analytical methods, utilizing observation, interview, and documentation approaches, targeting the community in Pringgolayan, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The research then found that the local community has very strong family and brotherhood values. Evidenced by the similarity of opinions and references from each informant. The Pringgolayan community realized that there was a change after seeing that the environmental conditions that were previously urban individualistic, then shifted to a society with socialism. The tradition of shaking hands then became a permanent culture with a high sense of harmony between individuals. This study confirms a harmony between individuals. And the new value that can be taken is a self-respect for fellow community members without regard to social status and background of each individual.

Abstract

Pesantren as a traditional Islamic educational institution has a social and cultural structure that is still thick with patriarchal values. Gender relations in them are often shaped by religious understanding that places men as the main authority. This study aims, first, to describe patriarchy in the perspective of pesantren. Second, to analyze and describe patriarchy in pesantren perspective in PP. Bustanul Ulum Mlokorejo. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The data collection techniques used were observation, documentation, and interviews. The results showed that first, patriarchy in the pesantren perspective is a relationship of male domination over women in socio-religious activities in the pesantren environment. Second, patriarchy in the pesantren perspective is not adopted in PP. Bustanul Ulum Mlokorejo. The implications of this finding indicate the need for dissemination related to relations that are starting to be equal, based on willingness, and mutual cooperation in the pesantren environment. Pesantren is no longer a religious educational institution that is the basis of patriarchal relations.

Abstract

This paper discusses worship, which is a means of connecting a servant with Allah SWT, starting from the heart, tongue, to the limbs. There is almost no difference of opinion among scholars regarding these three things to carry out worship rituals. Basically, worship is a very important matter to discuss because the origin of worship is in accordance with the guidance of the Qur'an and hadith, so that if the worship ritual is not in accordance with the Qur'an and hadith then the law is haram or forbidden which can lead to invalidity in its implementation. One of the famous scholars or mujtahid who has become a reference for many Muslims is Ibn Taimiyyah. This study uses secondary data sources that use several journals, magazines, newspapers, articles, books written by Ibn Taimiyyah related to the title of this research and other literature related to this research. The result according to Ibn Taimiyyah is truly carrying out what has been determined by Allah SWT, because in taking sources of religious teachings in general for worship is tauqiifiyyah (dependent on revelation). This means that it is impossible to determine any problem in aqidah other than the Al-Qur'an and As-Sunnah, as well as the agreement (Ijma') of the Salaf, because their agreement is protected from error. Then, according to Ibn Taymiyyah, every person who is Muslim must adhere to two main principles when worshiping. First, worship is performed only to Allah SWT.

Abstract

Ali ibn Abi Talib was known as a figure with a breadth of knowledge so that the Prophet called himself the city of knowledge, while Ali was called its gate. However, in the narration of hadith, Ali's contribution is relatively small compared to other companions such as Abu Hurairah or Anas ibn Malik. This condition raises academic questions that become a research gap because previous studies only highlight aspects of Ali's leadership and knowledge in general, without specifically examining the relationship between the title of bāb al-‘Ilm and the limited narration of hadith and its implications for the formation of Islamic civilization. This study aims to explain the reasons why the Prophet called Ali the gate of knowledge, analyze the factors that led to the small number of hadith he narrated, and trace the influence of his knowledge on the development of Islamic intellectualism. The approach used is descriptive qualitative through a literature study sourced from classical works and modern scientific literature. The findings of this study indicate that the title of bāb al-‘Ilm reflects Ali's spiritual and intellectual depth, while his careful narration of hadith is related to his commitment to maintaining the authenticity of the Prophet's words. On the other hand, his contributions to Islamic civilization are evident in laying the foundations of the science of grammar, strengthening the tradition of interpretation, and early theological-philosophical thought in Islam. Thus, this study provides novel value in understanding Ali ibn Abi Talib's intellectual position as a narrator and early architect of the Islamic scientific tradition.
