Abstract

Icebreakers are commonly used by trainers or instructors to maintain group dynamic. In fact, there is a growing interest for language teachers to use icebreakers in the classes. The current study focuses on the role of the ice breaking technique in increasing students’ interest in learning English. 70 students from SMP Negeri 2 Abepura were involved in this study. This study was conducted within a qualitative descriptive design using observation, interview, and questionnaire to collect the data. The results of the observation and interview showed that the use of icebreakers in the classes showed potentials in motivating the students to learn English in accordance with Sapp’s principles of icebreakers: simplicity, relevance, non-threat, open-endedness, and energizing. Besides, the result of the questionnaire showed that the students had a positive perception on the ice breaking technique applied by the teacher during the English classes. The majority of the students (> 60%) agreed that the ice breaking activities were motivating in terms of the principles. Overall, the ice breaking techniques was likely to increase the students' interest in learning English in terms of the principles.Keywords: icebreaking technique, students’ interest, learning English Icebreakers biasanya digunakan para pelatih atau instruktur untuk mempertahankan dinamika kelompok. Pada kenyataannya, ada paningkatan minat terhadap penggunaan icebreakers dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini berfokus pada peran teknik ice breaking dalam meningkatkan minat siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini melibatkan 70 siswa kelas dari SMP Negeri 2 Abepura. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil observasi dan wawancara menunjukkan bahwa teknik ice breaking memiliki potensi dalam memotivasi siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris berdasarkan prinsip icebreakers menurut Sapp yaitu sederhana, relevant, tidak membahayakan, terbuka, dan memberi semangat. Selain itu, hasil dari kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa para siswa memiliki persepsi positif tentang teknik ice breaking yang diterapkan oleh guru selama kelas bahasa Inggris. Mayoritas siswa (>60%) setuju bahwa setuju bahwa kegiatan icebreakers memotivasi mereka berdasarkan kelima prinsip yang ada. Secara keseluruhan, teknik icebreakeryang digunakan berpotensi meningkatkan minat siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dalam kaitannya dengan prinsip-prinsip yang ada.  Kata kunci: Teknik ice breaking, minat siswa, belajar bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Hasil belajar siswa merupakan output dari proses belajar mengajar. Salah satu masalah dalam pembelajaran di sekolah adalah rendahnya hasil belajar siswa. Hal ini dapat diketahui dari data awal nilai ulangan harian siswa yang masih berada di bawah KKM. Banyak faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi hasil belajar salah satunya adalah model pembelajaran. Artikel Penerapan Model Probem Based Learning (PBL) berbantuan media Big Book diharapkan memberikan dampak terhadap motivasi belajar dan hasil belajar peserta didik di jenjang kelas IV SD pada suatu proses pembelajaran muatan materi Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA). Artikel ini dibuat untuk memberi gambaran  seberapa besar penerapan model PBL berbantuan media Big Book terhadap motivasi belajar dan hasil belajar peserta didik. Pembelajaran dengan menggunakan media Big Book adalah model pembelajaran yang mengaitkan materi pembelajaran dengan gambar- gambar contoh kontekstual yang ada disekitar peserta didik, dan mendorong peserta didik membuat hubungan antara pengetahuan yang dimilikinya dengan penerapannya dalam kehidupan mereka sehari-hari. Penggunaan media juga dapat membantu guru dalam menyampaikan materi ajar dalam kelas, dapat membimbing dan mengarahkan peserta didik, dan juga sangat membantu bagi peserta didik dalam mengikuti proses pembelajaran di kelas maupun di luar kelas sehingga dapat memotivasi peserta didik belajar dan mengalami peningkatan, serta peserta didik memperoleh hasil belajar yang lebih baik. Peserta didik juga akan mengalami peningkataan sesuai harapan semua pihak. Guru dan peserta didik bersama-sama menggunakan media Big Book berisi muatan materi IPA yang terintegrasi dengan contoh kontekstual di sekitar maka diharapkan proses belajar mengajar berjalan sesuai dengan tujuan pembelajaran yang akan dicapai dan dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar.Kata kunci: Model PBL berbantuan Media Big Book, motivasi dan hasil belajar Student learning outcome is the output of the teaching and learning process. One of the problems in learning at school is the low student learning outcomes. This can be seen from the initial data on students' daily test scores which are still below the KKM. Many factors influence learning outcomes, one of which is the learning model. This article on the Application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model assisted by Big Book media is expected to have an impact on learning motivation and learning outcomes of students in grade IV SD in a process of learning Natural Sciences (IPA) material content. This article is aimed to describe how much the application of the PBL model assisted by Big Book media has  on learning motivation and student learning outcomes. Learning using Big Book media is a learning model that relates learning material to pictures of contextual examples around students, and encourages students to make connections between the knowledge they have and its application in their daily lives. The use of media can also assist teachers in conveying teaching material in class, can guide and direct students, and is also very helpful for students in participating in the learning process in class and outside the classroom so that it can motivate students to learn and experience improvement, as well as students get better learning results. Students will also experience an increase as expected. Teachers and students together use the Big Book media containing science material integrated with contextual examples. It is hoped that the teaching and learning process will run in accordance with the learning objectives to be achieved and can improve learning outcomes.Keywords: PBL Media, Big Book, motivation, learning outcomes

Abstract

Papua is home to numerous local cultures and languages. Early literacy programs help preserve and promote these cultural heritages, ensuring they are passed down to future generations.  Early literacy promotes social inclusion by enabling children to participate fully in their communities, family, schools, and society at large. It fosters a sense of belonging and equal participation for all, irrespective of linguistic or cultural backgrounds. The paper explores through related references on the multidimensional background of literacy initiatives and challenges in the Papua region. It offers a concise preview of the subject matter, emphasizing the significance of literacy as a critical factor in social and educational progress. It invites readers to explore into the complexities and dynamics of literacy development efforts within Papua, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of the region's educational aspirations and potential pathways for improvement.  A significant discovery concerning regional statistical data indicates a clear correlation between areas or districts with a high illiteracy rate and those experiencing elevated levels of poverty. Suggestion for urgent further investigation is required to address future literacy improvement in these specific regions within Papua. Literasi awal mendukung inklusi sosial dengan memberikan kesempatan kepada anak-anak untuk terlibat sepenuhnya dalam komunitas, keluarga, sekolah, dan masyarakat secara keseluruhan. Hal ini tentu saja berkontribusi dalam menciptakan persatuan dan partisipasi yang setara bagi semua individu, tanpa memandang latar belakang linguistik atau budaya yang mereka miliki. Paper ini menggali latar belakang yang kompleks dari upaya pengembangan literasi dan tantangan yang dihadapi di wilayah Papua berdasarkan sumber-sumber yang relevan. Disamping itu juga memberikan ringkasan singkat mengenai isu pokok yang menekankan betapa pentingnya literasi bagi kemajuan sosial dan pendidikan. Hal ini mendorong pembaca untuk lebih mendalami kompleksitas dan dinamika upaya pengembangan literasi di Papua, yang pada akhirnya akan meningkatkan pemahaman kita tentang aspirasi pendidikan di wilayah ini dan kemungkinan langkah-langkah perbaikan yang dapat diambil. Temuan signifikan yang berkaitan dengan data statistik regional menunjukkan adanya korelasi yang jelas antara daerah-daerah yang tingkat buta huruf tinggi dengan daerah-daerah yang tingkat kemiskinannya tinggi. Oleh karena itu, disarankan adanya urgensi penelitian lebih lanjut kedepan tentang pengembangan literasi yang difokuskan di daerah-daerah  tersebut di Papua. Abstract

This study examines the influence of patriarchal culture in Indonesia and the active response of feminist literary criticism through the analysis of Ayu Utami's novels "Si Parasit Lajang" and "Pengakuan Eks Parasit Lajang." Using qualitative research method, consisting of primary and secondary data such as bibliography and content analysis, the research reveals the resistance of women against the patriarchal society. The analysis indicates that the novels are an expression of gender equity and the struggles that women and other form of marginalized constituents in Indonesian society encounter. The novels endeavor not only to generate this comprehension of feminist ideas but also awake in women consciousness of their identity and a readiness to assert their identities. The results imply education reform, suggesting the integration of literary works into the approved program to test the students’ language proficiency and, in addition, to interest students in the complex situations illustrated in literature. In conclusion of this study, research can take steps forward in analytic skill improvement. Key words: women, rebellion, against, patriarchal, society, feminism

Abstract

This study is a contrastive analysis between simple tenses in the English language and the Ngalum language. The research aims to make Ngalum language users understand and aware that Ngalum has a tense system like English, thus making it easier for them to learn tenses in English. The method used in this research is classical contrastive analysis, which involves description, juxtaposition, and comparison. The results of this study indicate that both languages have a tense system. In simple tenses, including past, present, and future tenses. Verbs change according to the tense. The function of these verb changes has the same meaning, indicating activities corresponding to events in the past, present, and future. One notable difference is that verbs in English can stand alone as verbs, while in Ngalum, they are bound to the subject. In the English language, subject markers in English verbs are found in simple present. Especially for the third person.  Additionally, sentence structures differ between the two languages, with English following the pattern of Subject +Verb + Object while Ngalum follows Subject + Object + Verb. Even though these two languages are not closely related, they share a similar typology in terms of tense structure.

Abstract

Abstrak. Pembelajaran diferensiasi dikenal dengan pembelajaran memiliki ragam cara belajar yang sesuai dengan minat, bakat dan kebutuhan peserta didik guna mencapai tujuan pembelajaran. Pembelajaran ini terbagi menjadi tiga, yaitu diferensiasi konten, diferensiasi proses, dan diferensiasi produk. Keragaman peserta didik terbagi menjadi tiga, yaitu kesiapan belajar, minat, dan profil studi. Tujuan pembelajaran diferensiasi, yaitu 1) untuk membantu semua peserta didik dalam belajar, 2) untuk meningkatkan motivasi dan hasil belajar peserta didik, 3) untuk menjalin hubungan yang harmonis guru dan peserta didik, 4) untuk membantu peserta didik menjadi pelajar yang mandiri, 5) untuk meningkatkan kepuasan guru. Tujuan artikel ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran pembelajaran diferensiasi di SMA YPPK Teruna Bakti kelas XI. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui instrumen nontes berupa angket berdasarkan aspek sikap hasil belajar. Tes dilakukan terhadap 29 siswa. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata keseluruhan tingkat penguasaan adalah 83%. Sikap ilmiah per dimensi, untuk dimensi kesiapan belajar 76%, dimensi motivasi belajar 88%, dan dimensi ketekunan dan rasa tanggung jawab 85%. Differentiated learning is known as learning that has a variety of learning methods that suit students' interests, talents and needs in order to achieve learning goals. This learning is divided into three, namely content differentiation, process differentiation, and product differentiation. The diversity of students is divided into three, namely learning readiness, interests, and study profile. The objectives of differentiation learning, namely 1) to help all students learn, 2) to increase student motivation and learning outcomes, 3) to establish a harmonious relationship between teachers and students, 4) to help students become independent students, 5 ) to increase teacher satisfaction. The purpose of this article is to find out an overview of differentiated learning at SMA YPPK Teruna Bakti class XI. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive. Data collection was carried out through non-test instruments in the form of questionnaires based on attitudinal aspects of learning outcomes. The test was carried out on 29 students. The test results showed that the overall average mastery level was 83%. Scientific attitude per dimension, for the learning readiness dimension 76%, the learning motivation dimension 88%, and the perseverance and sense of responsibility dimension 85%. Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of obtaining answers to the problems that have been formulated, namely to determine the difference in the average mathematics learning outcomes of students who use cooperative learning models of TPS type with NHT type cooperative learning models on number pattern material in class VIII odd semester of SMP Negeri 1 Nabire in the 2018/2019 academic year. This research method uses a method with a quantitative approach with the type of Quasi Experimental design (quasi-experiment). The sample used in the study were students of class VIII.A as many as 31 students and class VIII.B as many as 32 students. Sampling to determine class 1 experiment and class 2 experiment was done by cluster random sampling technique. The results showed that there were differences in the learning outcomes of students who used cooperative learning models of TPS type with NHT type on number pattern material in class VIII odd semester of SMP Negeri 1 Nabire in the 2018/2019 academic year. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode dengan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis penelitian Quasi Experimental design (eksperimen semu). Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah peserta didik kelas VIII.A sebanyak 31 peserta didik dan kelas VIII.B sebanyak 32 peserta didik. Pengambilan sampel untuk menentukan kelas eksperimen 1 dan kelas eksperimen 2 dilakukan dengan tehnik cluster random sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan hasil belajar peserta didik yang menggunakan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe TPS dengan tipe NHT pada materi pola bilangan di kelas VIII semester ganjil SMP Negeri 1 Nabire tahun pelajaran 2018/2019. Abstract

This research aims to determine interest in learning and the factors that influence students' interest in learning in eighth grade students at YPK Hedam Abepura Middle School, Jayapura. The design of this research is descriptive-qualitative, using questionnaire instruments, observation, and documentation. The subjects in this research were 25 students in VIII A and 1 English teacher. The results of this research show that the interest in learning English of eighth grade students at YPK Hedam Middle School is very low. However, it is caused by various factors. The factors that influence students' interest in learning are: a) internal factors; and b) external factors. From the results of this research, students showed In the first aspect of 25 respondents, there were 2,74 (55%) who did not have a feeling of pleasure when studying English, while the second aspect saw 3,68 (74%) actively involved in learning English in class, the third aspect 3,23 (65%) who had an interest in learning English, and the last aspect 3,14 (63%) who seemed to focus on paying attention during English learning hours. Students feel unhappy when learning English, and the rest of them just follow English lessons without interest. From the results obtained, each aspect has clearly shown how students are doing in class when learning English, and students who do not have an interest in learning are also less (64,24%) maximum criteria score indicators of interest. Abstract

The zone system in the admission of new students (PPDB) is still a hotly debated issue. The objectives of this study are 1) to identify and classify words or phrases in sentences that contain appraisal on the attitude side which contains elements of affect, judgment, and appreciation; 2) to find words or phrases from the three types of attitude that have graduation; and 3) to provide a review of appraisal analysis from the point of view of editorial news writers in evaluating the zone system. This research method is descriptive qualitative with content analysis design. The findings were  a number of positive and negative statements based on appraised items by appraisers. Abstract

This study investigates the development of EFL students’ lesson planning skills over the course of a Microteaching class. By analyzing three lesson plans created by 20 participants at different stages of the course, the research reveals significant improvements in key instructional areas, including learning objectives, lesson structure, instructional strategies, engagement, digital tool integration, and assessment methods. Moreover, participants improved lesson planning and objective alignment, though initial lesson coherence and appropriate digital tool selection posed challenges. While engagement strategies advanced, early lessons relied heavily on teacher-led instruction, limiting student interaction. The findings provide insights into how Microteaching facilitates pedagogical skill development and offer recommendations for improving teacher education programs.
