Abstract

A classroom action research (CAR) was conducted to improve the reading comprehension of class IX students of SMP Negeri 1 Latoma in the 2022/2023 academic year by using Comic Strips Teaching Materials in Group Work Activities. The instruments used were questionnaire sheets, student reading scores, and teacher observation sheets. The success indicator is a score of 70. Two cycles were carried out; each consists of four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The first cycle consisted of three meetings including pre-test, material giving, and post-test I. The second cycle consisted of two meetings covering material explanation and post-test 2. Questionnaires are given at the last meeting of each cycle. From the results of the pre-test, it was found that there were only 8% students could pass the success indicator. After being given action in Cycle 1, students who can achieve success indicators are 25%. The number increased in Cycle 2 to 67%. The analysis of the researcher's observation sheet showed a positive response to teaching materials and group work activities. From the questionnaire, it is found that Comic Strips Teaching Materials in Group Work Activities can help students in reading report texts. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of comic strips teaching materials in group work activities can improve the reading comprehension of grade IX students of SMP Negeri1 Latoma in the 2022/2023 academic year. Similar research can effectively be applied to classrooms in schools with the inadequacy of technology facilities for teaching material procurement.

Abstract

Corrective feedback has been one disputable concept in language learning for experts argued regarding its effectiveness and possible harmful side-effects. Hence, this study aimed to describe the beliefs systems of students regarding corrective feedback in language learning in terms of self-efficacy, effort, language anxiety, and learning strategy. Participants were 100 grade ten students of Gen. Tiburcio de Leon National High School who answered the validated researcher-made survey questionnaire. The results revealed that students agreed on the efficiency of corrective feedback in language learning which indicates that students have underlying positive beliefs regarding corrective feedback. Data were also analyzed to identify the significant relationship between the beliefs on Oral corrective feedback (OCF) and written corrective feedback (WCF) and their relationship to students’ academic performance using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings showed that there was a moderate correlation between the students’ beliefs on OCF and WCF. Furthermore, students’ academic performance has a weak correlation with WCF in terms of self-efficacy and has no correlation to other key concepts of beliefs system. These findings became the bases on developing Filipino High School students’ typology on corrective feedback explaining that students had unknowingly held layers of beliefs on corrective feedback which described as frontline belief system and embedded beliefs system. The study recommends that the output must be used as guide or aid to ESL teachers and instructors in delivering student-friendly language learning experience as part of students’ holistic development.

Abstract

This paper aimed to determine the 76 Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) graduating students’ self- assessed English language communicative competence, their English language competency level and the factors that have contributed to their English competency using the Descriptive- Correlational Research Design and Thematic Analysis through a survey questionnaire, teacher- made test, and open- ended questionnaire. The result showed that the graduating students have evaluated themselves as competent in their overall competency in the English language, the students demonstrated a high level of communicative competence, and there is no significant association with their self-assessed competency and their actual competence in the English language because there might be factors other than self- perceived competency that were contributing to the level of English proficiency of students. In addition, affective factors such as anxiety, self- confidence, and motivation, cognitive factors such as semantic familiarity, and their growing and learning environment and prior linguistic knowledge and exposure had influenced the students’ English competency. It was suggested that a training program in English to develop the self- confidence and motivation and reduce the student’s anxiety in using English, promotion of communicative language teaching and creating of enabling environment for the usage of the language in classes should be conducted, and an actual speaking and writing skills test should be administered.

Abstract

Despite persistent efforts, many second language learners struggle to achieve native-like proficiency, often due to fossilized errors. This study investigates fossilization in AB-English students at Isabela State University, offering novel insights for educators and researchers. Employing a multi-pronged approach, we examined creative writing outputs, administered grammar tests, and conducted interviews to unveil students' learning strategies and coping mechanisms. This qualitative case study, informed by Selinker's framework, allowed us to delve deeper into the phenomenon, uncovering previously unknown aspects of fossilization specific to this learner group. Our findings not only illuminate the complexities of fossilization but also reveal the intricate interplay between individual learning strategies and persistent errors. This deeper understanding empowers educators to design more targeted interventions and offers valuable research avenues for exploring fossilization across diverse learner groups and contexts.

Abstract

In recent years, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has gained popularity among educators across the world, including in Indonesia. In classroom practice, various procedures have been applied to conduct CLIL lessons. One of them is the Reading to Learn (R2L) pedagogy developed in the Systemic Functional Linguistic tradition. This current study illustrates how R2L pedagogy was employed in an Indonesian CLIL biology lesson. To achieve the goal, the study used a qualitative case study. The data were obtained from video recordings of classes during the implementation at a private school in Bandung Barat, Indonesia. At the time of the teaching, the R2L pedagogy was applied in the classroom to embed English literacy in biology lessons for senior high school students. From the pedagogic register analysis of the selected lesson, it was revealed that the lesson consisted of three carefully planned lesson stages. First, preparing for reading immersed students in daily life and helped them acquire basic knowledge by using images or diagrams. Subsequently, detailed reading was carefully prepared to connect the activated knowledge with human digestive systems (disciplinary knowledge). Here, the students read the given text to identify technical processes in the digestive system in each organ, jotted them down in the form of notes, and elaborated on the terms. At the last stage, the observed teacher incorporated the scientific terms into new writings during a joint construction activity. R2L pedagogy, as described here, supports educators in delivering interactive CLIL lessons effectively and enables educators to promote embedded literacy in classrooms.

Abstract

Writing skill is a skill that is highly emphasized so that Indonesian students can truly master it in today's digital era. In learning English at MA level, writing skill on report text is highly prioritized, but this cannot be felt by students in class X-I MAN 1 Pasuruan. For this reason, researchers carried out best practice learning by implementing differentiated learning based on artificial intelligence-based UbD design in this class. The aim of this best practice is to improve the writing skill of students in class X-I MAN 1 Pasuruan on the material report text. After this best practice was carried out, several conclusions were obtained. First, the learning results show that students are happy with the provision of cognitive and non-cognitive diagnostic assessments to become aware of their respective learning styles. Second, the use of LKPD has not made students interested in enjoying the learning process. Finally, students stated that they could understand the material provided eventhough they were not completely happy with it. Suggestions and recommendations from this best practice are that the differentiated learning approach is worthy of being practiced by educators wherever they are and really needs to be integrated with other learning approaches or strategies or methods and of course also taking advantage of technological developments in learning.
