The technique used is the Acrostic Technique which can help students more easily come up with ideas in writing poetry texts. The results of the poetry text written with this technique also look unique. Students first write an exciting poem title. Furthermore, the title of this poem is written vertically and used as the first letter of each line of poetry written by students. This research was conducted on students of class X MIPA 2, SMA Negeri 2 Wates, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. Before taking action, the students’ initial abilities to write poetry were first measured, namely, the pre-action stage. In the pre-action, 0% of students scored more than 75. In the first cycle, the results showed that 17 out of 36 students or about 47.22% scored according to the success criteria. Students who were motivated during learning were as much as 25%. In cycle II, the results showed that more than 75% of students felt that learning to write poetry using the Acrostic Technique was interesting and fun. Students’ poetry writing skills improved after the Acrostic Technique was applied in cycle II. All students in cycle II scored more than 75 if the percentage was 100%. The criteria for the success of the action have been achieved in cycle II. The findings of this study are useful for students, teachers and schools in improving the quality of learning, especially improving writing skills.

Abstract

Reading and writing are basic literacy that still needs to be cultivated, including for students. One of the literacy strategies is through learning. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which aims to improve literacy in responding to texts through the use of APIK interactive learning media. The CAR in this study employed the model of Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1992). This research was conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, action, observation and evaluation/reflection stages. Each cycle was carried out for six meetings. Data collection was carried out using student activity observation sheets and learning outcomes tests which were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with descriptive analysis. In its application, it uses APIK syntax: (1) A, apperception or giving stimulation, (2) P, Pahami, students conduct surveys and listen to media, (3) I, implement, students compose response texts (4) K, communicate, students present their work. The subjects of this study were students of SMP Negeri 3 Peterongan, class 9H, for the academic year 2022/2023, as many as 27 students. The instruments used are observation sheets, documentation sheets, and the students’ writing in response texts. In the first cycle, the group’s results were 100% complete, individually 70% completed. As for the second cycle, the group completed 100% and individually 93%. Thus, there is an increase in student learning outcomes in the form of responding to texts. It can be concluded that APIK interactive learning media can improve students’ literacy through responding to texts.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine how second-language classrooms regarded code-switching and to look into the relationship between code-switching in their academic performance and attitudes in English language classes. In order to provide statistical analysis for code-switching without modifying the study variable, the study adopted a correlational research method that collected quantifiable data. 124 Grade 11 seniors from the LagunaIsabela Campus of the University of Perpetual Help System who were enrolled during the academic year 2021–2022 made up the study’s sample. The adopted questionnaire was used by the researchers and slightly modified to fit the needs of the study. It was then taken through pilot testing to assess its reliability and consistency, and the respondents responded using Google Forms. The study found no statistically significant differences in the attitudes of the respondents who were grouped according to their strands using Frequency and Percentage, ANOVA, weighted mean, and Pearson correlation. This study also showed that the respondents’ attitudes did not impact their academic performance in English. The majority of respondents represented the STEM strand. The respondents shared the same opinions regarding code-switching and its justifications. When code-switching was used, most of the respondents had excellent academic achievement in English. Their strands had little impact on the respondents’ attitudes. Academic achievement has little impact on the attitudes of the respondents. Additionally, based on the findings of this study, code-switching can be seen as a beneficial teaching and learning approach.

Abstract

EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) is an innovative teaching approach where subjects other than English are taught to the students in English, a second or foreign language. This approach has been widely adopted in European and Asian tertiary education institutions, including Indonesia. However, only a limited number of research has been carried out to reveal the student’s perception of the advantages and drawbacks of the implementation in the country. This study, therefore, aimed at investigating the students’ perceptions of the advantages and drawbacks of EMI implementation in one state university in Bali, Indonesia. This study employed mixed-method research, which was carried out with 130 participants enrolled in the international class initiation. The obtained data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study showed five significant advantages of EMI class: cognitive advantages, resource availability, rich exposure to English and chances to use it, career opportunity, and improvement of students’ motivation in English. However, EMI students also encountered challenges such as difficulties comprehending lectures/materials, taking tests, and low participation in classroom discussions.

Abstract

Abstract   This research investigates the tendency of English Department students to employ figurative language in creative writing. The study also delves into the generic structure of such language, aiming to understand the nuances within the creative writing produced by the students. Recognizing creative writing as a vital tool for comprehending language characteristics and fostering creativity, this research seeks to address students' challenges in composition arising from a lack of understanding and assumptions about its similarity to conventional writing. A preliminary study revealing insufficient creativity among English Department students in producing figurative language (Juliandini, 2013), this research adopts semantic analysis (Jackson, 2000) as the theoretical framework. Employing a qualitative method, the study analyzes creative writing from eight students. Componential analysis is employed to explore the deep structure of words, unraveling semantic interrelations between components to reveal meanings at the surface level. The results indicate a propensity among students to generate figurative language, with metaphor emerging most frequently in participants' creative writing. Simile, personification, and the less frequent hyperbole follow in occurrence. These findings contribute valuable insights into the creative writing abilities of English Department students, informing strategies to enhance their language proficiency and creative expression. The research underscores the significance of mastering creative writing skills as a means to enrich language capabilities and foster creativity among students.

Abstract

One of the most commonly used vocabulary learning strategies is keeping PVN (Personal Vocabulary Notes). The students apply the PVN strategy to record and organize the words they come across, along with their meanings and any additional information. The primary objective of this study is to find out how students perceive the utilization of the PVN (Personal Vocabulary Notes) as a vocabulary learning strategy based on three components: cognitive, affective, and conative. This study was conducted in a junior high school located in Surabaya. The researchers employed a qualitative descriptive method in this study, which involved nine eighth-grade students in the academic year 2022/2023. The research was carried out in four phases: preliminary study, data collection, data interpretation and analysis, and data presentation. Data was collected through a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 18 items using a four-point Likert Scale, and a semi-structured interview comprising 9 questions. The research findings from both instruments showed that the majority of students held positive responses. Thus, it can be concluded that EFL students have strongly positive perceptions toward the utilization of PVN as a vocabulary learning strategy to improve vocabulary in terms of cognitive, affective, and conative components.

Abstract

The primary issue addressed in this research revolves around the absence of folklore books suitable for educational purposes in high schools. Consequently, the research objective focuses on developing an e-book designed to enhance high school students' proficiency in retelling folklore narratives. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach, the researchers engaged in data collection and analysis, product design, validation, revisions, testing, and the eventual production of the e-book. The data for this research includes various folklore sources, namely, "Telaga Warna," "Karang Nini," "Bale Kambang," and "Situ Bagendit." These sources were collected through observational techniques, interviews, questionnaire distributions, and validation tests in developing the product. The outcomes of this developmental research attained a 'very feasible' categorization, evident in the material feasibility assessment achieving 80% and the endorsement from media experts reaching 98%. Moreover, the evaluation conducted by Indonesian language teachers yielded an 88% score, while student respondents' assessment of the media resulted in an 86% score. Based on these assessment outcomes, it can be concluded that this e-book media is well-suited for educational use within school.

Abstract

Embracing technology in teaching English has become a necessity following the rapid growth of technology, including the mushrooming of the use of e-learning in the ELT context. It has been known that a conventional classroom facilitates and enhances interactive language teaching effectively since the students can communicate with their teacher and classmates through face-to-face meetings. In the era of e-learning, developing interactive language teaching has become a challenge for English teachers. Because e-learning requires students to be more independent, they do not have to study in class with their friends and teachers. On the other hand, students need to interact with others to use English for communication successfully. By employing Systematic Literature Review (SLR), this research reviews some concepts to find suitable methods on how e-learning can accommodate ELT as effectively and interactive as conventional classrooms because finding suitable e-learning methods is important for enabling the students to use English successfully. Finding the best e-learning application that supports e-learning interaction in ELT is another objective of this paper. Moreover, it is expected that the paper will contribute to the development of an e-learning English course as interactive as the teaching of English in the conventional classroom.
