This study originates from the understanding that the Islamization process in the Indonesian Archipelago, particularly in Java, occurred not only through political or missionary approaches but also through cultural and philosophical engagement. Javanese philosophy became a medium of dialogue between local wisdom and Islamic teachings, especially in the concept of a harmonious relationship between humans and God. The urgency of this research lies in affirming that Islamic thought within Javanese philosophy is not a form of syncretism but an integration of the universal values of Islam with profound local spiritual wisdom. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach and integral-descriptive analysis of Javanese philosophical texts and classical Islamic sources. The findings reveal a significant alignment between Javanese theological concepts and Islamic doctrines, such as tan kena kinaya gapa reflecting the Islamic concept of God’s transcendence and absolute power; Gusti Allah orah sare illustrating the divine attribute of constant awareness and vigilance; and sangkan paraning Dumadi parallel to the Islamic view of human creation and ultimate return to God. The novelty of this research lies in demonstrating that Javanese philosophy can be regarded as a localized expression of Islamic spirituality that is both profound and contextually relevant.

The island of Java has long been a central hub for the spread and development of Islam in the Indonesian Archipelago, producing numerous scholars and Muslim intellectuals who have contributed significantly to the advancement of Islamic knowledge and Qur’anic exegesis. Among the Qur’anic commentaries originating from Java, two works stand out for their scientific approach: Tafsir Salman, compiled by the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Tafsir Ilmi, developed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Both interpretations employ scientific perspectives to elucidate the verses of the Qur’an, demonstrating that Qur’anic exegesis can adapt to the ongoing development of science and technology. This approach introduces a distinctive nuance compared to traditional exegesis, emphasizing the integration of science and religion. The study of these two tafsirs provides valuable insights into how Indonesia’s Islamic tradition remains open to innovation and highlights the deep interconnection between scientific knowledge and Islamic thought in the modern era.

The interpretation of the Qur’an in Indonesia cannot be separated from various social, cultural, and scientific factors that develop in society. In this context, the contribution of local scholars such as Mahmud Yunus and Bishri Mus}t}ofa has an important role in forming an interpretation that is in accordance with the dynamics of local society. Both figures offer an approach that not only combines religious understanding with local values, but also considers the development of modern science and thought. However, the differences in the interpretive approaches of these two figures have not been studied comprehensively, especially within the framework of nusantara interpretation. This article will explore and compare the methods and styles of interpretation of the two figures to understand their influence on nusantara interpretation of the Qur’an. This study uses a qualitative method with a comparative analysis approach. Data were otained through a literature review of the interpretive works of both figures and other supporting literature. This study shows that Mahmud Yunus in his interpretation book tends to understand the context using a scientific and technological approach, while Bishri Mus}t}ofa uses a Sufi and traditionalist approach. This comparison will show that both figures can make significant contributions in shaping the tradition of Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia, with complementary styles in responding to the religious needs of the nusantara Muslim community.

Gamelan is a musical ensemble that often features instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs. This gamelan music ensemble consists of several musical instruments which, when played together, create an instrument. Musicians can enjoy gamelan music just by listening to the sound, or use gamelan as an accompaniment in other artistic performances. The peculiarity of gamelan is that its sound is not visual, so it is easy to combine with various other types of art. Gamelan is said to have been created by Sang Hyang Guru, a god who ruled all of Java, and who had a palace on Mount Mahendra in the Madangkamalan region or what is now known as Mount Lawu. Initially, gamelan was created in the form of a gong which was used to summon the gods.

This article explores the combination of Islamic law and local wisdom in Java in a social and cultural context. The da'wah approach used by the Walisongo, Islamic preaching scholars in Java, emphasizes harmonization between Islamic teachings and local traditions. Through art, culture and social structures, Islam was well accepted by the Javanese people who previously adhered to Hindu-Buddhist religion in the 15th and 16th centuries. This phenomenon creates a unique identity known as Javanese Islam, which is inclusive and moderate. Although most of the Islamization process took place in harmony, this article also examines the tension between traditionalist Islamic groups who support syncretism and modernist groups who encourage a purer application of Islam. With a sociological approach, this article explores how Islam was adapted into the lives of Javanese people and how this acculturation formed a new social order where religion is not only understood as a belief system, but also as a social force that interacts with local culture.

Islam developed in Java in harmony with the culture of the surrounding community. Some Javanese cultures are still preserved and dialogued with Islam. One of them is the Nyekar cultural tradition at the tomb of Mbah Kanjeng Sepuh in Sidayu Gresik. This article discusses this from the perspective of the Prophet's hadith. This article uses a qualitative method, presented descriptively with two main sources, namely literature review and field study. From the results of the study, it was found that the Nyekar tradition at the tomb of Mbah Kanjeng Sepuh is an activity that is usually carried out by a group of people on the Javanese Pahing market day and is most crowded on Friday Pahing. This activity is carried out based on the Prophet's hadith regarding the permissibility of visiting graves.

This research examines Madurese ethics as a basis for building harmonious relationships between humans, nature and God, based on the social and cultural values inherent in society. Through Im-Manuel Kant's transcendental and deontological ontological approach, using literature review research methods. This research analyzes the implementation of Madurese ethics in human interactions by highlighting the carok phenomenon which reflects social dynamics. In addition, the rokat tase' phenomenon shows a connection with nature, underlining the importance of balance and respect for the environment. In the context of the relationship with God, the samman phenomenon is an illustration of the application of ethical principles in the religious life of Madurese people. Comparative studies on local Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia remain limited, even though such works reflect the distinctive intellectual dynamics of Nusantara Islam. Tafsir Rahmat by Oemar Bakry and Rangkaian Cerita dalam Al-Qur’an by Bey Arifin are two local interpretations written by scholars from similar backgrounds and periods but exhibiting significant methodological differences. Both were composed to address the needs of Indonesian readers for accessible and socially relevant understandings of the Qur’an. This study aims to analyze and compare their interpretative methodologies using a qualitative method and comparative analysis through library research. The findings show that Oemar Bakry emphasizes systematic structure and linguistic clarity to prevent misinterpretation of the Qur’anic text, whereas Bey Arifin employs a narrative approach that explores ethical and spiritual wisdom from Qur’anic stories. This research enriches Indonesian Qur’anic studies through two distinct yet complementary models of local exegesis: textual-rational and contextual-narrative.

This study examines the polemics over the identity and characteristics of Abd al-Rauf al-Singkili's Nusantara tafsir book, Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d. Which many consider that this tafsir book is a duplication and translation of previously existing tafsir books, such as Tafsir Jalālayn, Tafsir al-Khāzin, and Tafsir al-Baydawi. This research is explored through a qualitative method with a Library Research approach. Because the sources used are primary literature in the form of Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d and supported by secondary literature from books, journal articles, and so on. The results of this study found evidence that the book of Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d is an original book of interpretation and adaptive application. And the assumptions and accusations of orientalists against Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d are unfounded.
