International Research Journal of Business Studies (IRJBS) comprises three constructs. The word “International” refers to our mission to provide readers with relevant fields of study and to involve authors in giving their contributions on an international scale. ”Research Journal” refers to our aim to function as a medium to disseminate research findings regardless of methodological differences. ”Business Studies” refers to the boundary of the fields of studies that we serve i.e. encompassing all disciplines and paradigms related to the studies of any facet of the business. Aim The primary objective of IRJBS is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the area of business studies by presenting the results of an empirical study, including rigorous research methods, and providing managerial implications to the readers. Scope The IRJBS welcomes manuscripts in business management, which include the areas of strategic management, marketing management, finance management, organization, human resources management, and operations management. Starting Volume 13, Number 2 (2020), IRJBS publishes high-quality articles/papers using rigorous research with questions, evidence, and conclusions that are related to corporate management studies and recent trends that are relevant to business management scholars and business practitioners. More specifically, the IRJBS seeks to publish papers that ask and help to answer important and interesting questions in managing the corporation, develop and/or test theory, replicate prior studies, explore interesting phenomena, review and synthesize existing research, and evaluate the many methodologies used in the corporate management field. We welcome manuscripts in corporations within one geographic and/or across the geographic and business spectrum which include but are not limited to corporate strategy, corporate governance, corporate organization, and human capital, corporate finance, corporate marketing, and the operations aspect of the corporation. We appreciate a diverse range of research methods and are open to papers that rely on statistical inference, qualitative data, verbal theory, computational models, and mathematical models

Abstract

This confirmatory study is aimed at analyzing the impact of relationships, information search, and competencies on competitive strategy and SMEs performance in Indonesia. The study used 100 SMEs samples that obtained through mailed questionnaires. The results show: Firstly, the perception of information, information sources, and export competence has no significant effect on competitive strategy. However the findings for SMEs in Indonesia, indicated that export related information has negative effects on competitive strategy. Secondly, export competencies has an enormous influence on the company’s capacity and ability to use information appropriately, when the company must deal with challenges or when the company is eager to take advantage of the opportunities to increase growth and profitability. Thirdly, competitive strategy does not directly affect export performance but it is moderated by the environment uncertainty. It indicates that the influence of competitive strategy would be greater in an uncertain business environment. The uncertain business environment will encourage companies to explore competitive strategy to improve their performance.

Abstract

PT Freeport Indonesia has decided to alter its mining operations from open-pit mining to underground mining in Grasberg. A change of mining area focus directly affects its related departments, and even need new operations strategy to address the transition. Considering its long-term run of mining operations, its strategic issues are assessed by using Slack and Lewis operations strategy model, and decisions are made through the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) tool. Previously, the assessment of company’s current business and corporate strategy was conducted by applying SWOT analysis and complemented with the Strategic Factors Analysis Summary (SFAS) as the point-of-reference of the operations strategy.

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of human capital to Indonesia’s productivity. The result of this study reveals a significant contribution of human capital as shown in the model which is using highest weighted of primary and secondary level of education. The most significant result found in the model using secondary level as the highest weighted of human capital. In contrast, there is no significant contribution of human capital using proportional weighted between education levels. This suggests that improvement in knowledge, adoption of technology and skill in the primary and secondary education meet the demand of industries in Indonesia. This study uses a time series regression to analyze data 1985-2010.

Abstract

Some previous researchers are still arguing about the factors that determine the selection of a bank. These factors depend on the intensity of marketing activities undertaken by the bank, reputation of the bank, credit availability, friendly staffs, appropriate interest rates, and location. Jakarta was selected for the research location since Jakarta is the biggest city in Indonesia that represents the advancement of the banking industry. Different statistics tools are applied to find the accurate opinion why respondent choose a bank. Based on the results, the research concludes factors that determine in selecting a bank tend to be based on the secondary factors such as recommendation from friends, and advice from family members.

Abstract

Balancing creativity and structure becomes an emerging issue, especially for companies whose competitive advantage is on creativity because failure in managing both creativity and structure will result in business losses, as experienced by Netscape, Xerox and Microsoft. PT Starqle Indonesia tends to experience the imbalance condition between creativity and structure, especially when the company plans to change its business focus from project-based to product-based. In project-based, structure is more emphasized. While to anticipate the business changing, Starqle must be able to manage both creativity and structure. The influence factors are company lifecycle, competency, ownership, self-motivation, leaders, and trust, while for structure; these factors are business process, organizational structure and policy. Builtto-change approach is used to balance both creativity and structure as continuous process. The approach focuses on 3 (three) core components: strategizing, creating value and implementing. Strategic intent should be aligned with identity to strengthen the creativity side. Creating value by leveraging learning is performed to improve the structure by means of conducting knowledge activity cycle to capture individual process in generating new knowledge. The last component i.e implementation is to improve creativity and structure by focusing on people, process and information technology.

Abstract

This research is aimed to investigate factors that influence the intentions of adopting computer for business purpose, and theirimplications on managerial development. Semi structured interview and courier mailed survey had been employed to collect the data. A conceptual framework and theoretical insight presented based on literature review and primary data collected from the various east java agribusiness. To develop qualitative information of sample characteristics, cross tabulation was employed. Logistic regression was used to test the research hypotheses. The research findings show that the intention to adopt computer in east java agribusiness is strongly influenced by managers whose ages are 41+, education (TAFE/D3), and sales volume. This research has a direct implication on agribusiness development for the overall east java agribusiness and provinces in Indonesia. It is expected that it will encourage other researchers to conducting similar research benchmarking with other developing countries. The complexity and wide range of agribusiness term made the research methodology complicated.

Abstract

The theory of capital structure has advanced remarkably. Thisdevelopment began as many firms had options to consider various external factors determining the composition of debt and equity. Not only the asymmetric information or the conflict among bondholders and shareholders initiated the Pecking Order Theory and the Static Trade-off Theory respectively but also the overvalued or undervalued of stock price had to be taken as a determinant factor for identifying the ideal debt-equity mix. The author maintains these factors as they were pioneers to this theory on Market Timing Theory (MTT) introduced by Baker and Wurgler (2002). The essence of this theory is described when stock prices are overvalued, firms will finance projects through debts, otherwise the firms will be undervalued and be relied on equity financing. Using the methodology introduced by Baker and Wurgler (2002), the author selected only samples of IPOs of firms during 2008-2009 to limit the scope of this study. The main objective of this study is to test the hypothèses of Market Timing Theory formulated by Dahlan (2004) and by Kusumawati and Danny (2006) which have been proven by the GLS model, and the OLS model-like as in Baker and Wurgler (2002), Susilawati (2008) and Saad (2010). This study concludes that the market-to-book ratio has a negative effect on the market leverage. The implication is that when firms achieve certain level of earnings growth, the stock price will be overvalued, so it would be the right timing for firms to proceed equity financing. Under the robustness test with GLS Random Effect, the hypothèses of MTT is supported.

Abstract

Along with the process of globalization, the retail industry has been growing into a business that is very influential in the world economy, including Indonesian economy. The growth of modern retailers dominates the retail business in Indonesia, supported by the widespread presence of foreign retailers bringing modern retail concepts. The trend choice of shopping places of the Indonesian people in the future are shopping malls and modern markets. This will drive changes in customer behavior in making purchase decisions. The development model used to describe the behavior of consumer spending, which is rarely used, especially in Indonesia, is a Model of Goal-Directed Behavior (MGB). MGB has factors of the model builders from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). They are past behavior and emotional factors. Therefore, it is possible to further examine the distinction between expectations and interests as variables that can motivate a person in making purchasing decisions. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze: 1) the influence of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and emotion on the desire in the form of modern retail consumer behavior patterns 2) the influence of desire and perceived behavioral control on the intention in forming the patterns of modern retail consumer behavior. 202 modern retail consumers in Surabaya region (North, South, East, West and Central) were used as respondents. Stratified judgment sampling was applied and the SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) was used to test the hypotheses. The first finding of the study is that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and emotion have a significant effect on desire. The second finding is that desire and perceived behavioral control significantly influence the intention in forming the modern retail consumer behavior patterns. It was also found a good fit model that builds the influence of attitude, subjective norm, anticipated positive emotion, negative anticipated emotion, desire, intention, and perceived behavioral control on behavior.

Abstract

Indonesia is affected by global crisis. Increasing the number of entrepreneurs is one of many solutions to increase the economic growth in Indonesia. The number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia to leverage the economic growth is still limited. Entrepreneurs can be prepared through an Entrepreneurship Study Program. Entrepreneurship Study Program attempts to create qualified entrepreneurs who have relevant competences. In order to create a qualified entrepreneurs, the Entrepreneurial Studies Program requires a competency-based curriculum that will support the educational process and provide all the necessary to become future entrepreneurs who can survive through a global challenge. This research aims to design a competence-based curriculum for entrepreneurial study and uses Quality Function Deployment (QFD) as the major tool to design the competencebased curriculum. From the QFD process, this research finds core and elective courses for the Entrepreneurship Study Program. The result shows the competences covered by the courses and sequence, credits, and teaching methods for each course. The competences prepared the potential entrepreneurs can be achieved through specific courses which can be acquired within 8 semesters.

Abstract

In the midst of shopping mall development today, an understanding of consumer behaviors and preferences is absolutely a must if we want to plan successfuly a shopping mall. This knowledge will provide input for strategic planning so that the concept offered for shopping mall development will meet the consumers’ demand and may win the market competition. This study explores the preferences of students in Bandung as one of the potential market segments of the shopping mall. Qualitative study was conducted to find out the reasons why students choose a particular shopping mall as their favorite place. It was found that the accessibility and design of the malls are important as they enhance student preferences. In addition facilities in a shopping mall which mainly attract college students segment are entertainment facilities and eating counters.
