Abstract

Tradisi Sedekah Bumi in Dusun Krajan, Tunahan Village, is a cultural practice rich in symbolic and spiritual meanings. This study aims to uncover the symbolic meanings of offerings in this tradition and examine their relevance to the concept of pattidāna in Theravāda Buddhism. The research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, using participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation for data collection. The findings show that offerings carry complex symbolic meanings as a form of spiritual communication with ancestors and unseen beings. Elements such as flowers, coffee, incense, and takir reflect values of spirituality, ancestral reverence, and gratitude toward nature. This practice is aligned with the concept of pattidāna, which refers to merit transfer to ancestors as an expression of spiritual solidarity and communal identity. The study concludes that Sedekah Bumi embodies an integration of local and Buddhist values, making it a significant cultural practice to preserve amidst the challenges of modernity and contemporary spiritual crises

Abstract

Abstract

Buddhist education in the millennial era faces various internal and external challenges, especially in adapting to the character of the younger generation who are highly dependent on information technology but weak in filtering moral values. Buddhist educational institutions also still face structural problems such as limited human resources, lack of contextual strengthening of Dhamma values, and an institutional image that is not yet strong in society. This study uses a library research method with content analysis and hermeneutics techniques to explore the relevance of Buddhist teachings to the dynamics of modern education. In the context of the Merdeka Belajar policy, Buddhist education has a great opportunity to transform through a flexible learning approach, strengthening student character, integrating spiritual values, and improving education management. In addition, the implementation of Buddhist leadership principles such as the Dasa Raja Dhamma and meditation practices can be a distinctive force that distinguishes Buddhist schools from other institutions. This transformation requires the active role of teachers, principals, foundations, and Buddhist organizations to synergize in building meaningful and competitive education in the digital era.

Abstract

Impaired emotion regulation and decreased quality of life are common, yet often untreated, sequelae of stroke. Conventional rehabilitation primarily targets physical and cognitive recovery, leaving affective disturbances unaddressed. This study examined the efficacy of a structured Buddhist meditation program—Mindful Resilience After Stroke (MRAS)—for improving emotion regulation and quality of life in stroke survivors. Forty-two ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke patients (3–18 months post-onset) were consecutively recruited and randomly allocated to an intervention group (n = 21) receiving an 8-week MRAS protocol (1 × 60 min/week) or a control group (n = 21) receiving standard care only. Emotion regulation was assessed with the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form (DERS-SF) and quality of life with the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Scale (SS-QOL). Between-group changes (Δ post-pre) were analyzed using independent t-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). The intervention group showed a significantly greater reduction in emotion-regulation difficulties than controls (ΔDERS-SF −18.4 ± 5.1 vs. −3.2 ± 4.3; p < 0.001; d = 1.62). Quality-of-life gains were also larger in the intervention group (ΔSS-QOL 35.7 ± 8.9 vs. 7.1 ± 6.5; p < 0.001; d = 1.89). The most improved sub-domains were emotional acceptance, emotional awareness, and impulse control (DERS-SF), as well as energy, mood, and social participation (SS-QOL). No intervention-related adverse events were reported. MRAS is an effective and safe adjunctive intervention to enhance emotion regulation and quality of life after stroke. Embedding mindfulness practices grounded in Buddhist tradition into stroke rehabilitation offers a holistic, culturally adaptable approach for neuropsychological services in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study discusses the role of FoGuangShan Humanistic Buddhism in building compassion-based communities through education in Indonesia. As one of the schools of modern Buddhism, FoGuangShan transmits the values of compassion, wisdom, and humanity in educational practices, both formal and informal. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study explains how these values are applied in curriculum, learning activities, and social programs involving interfaith and cultural communities. The results of the study show that education based on Humanistic Buddhism plays an important role in fostering tolerance, strengthening moral character, and encouraging social solidarity in Indonesia's multicultural environment. Furthermore, FoGuangShan managed to create a learning space that not only focuses on academic knowledge, but also on the development of empathy, social skills, and collective awareness for living in harmony. In addition, an inclusive and dialogical approach to education is able to strengthen social relations between individuals and minimize potential conflicts based on religious and cultural differences. These findings confirm that the educational model implemented by FoGuangShan can be a significant contribution to the development of character education, interfaith dialogue, and the strengthening of social cohesion in a pluralistic society in Indonesia, as well as an alternative reference for human values-based educational practices.

Abstract

Buddhist teachings play a crucial role in addressing various social problems that continue to develop in the modern era. Rapid social change, globalization, and technological advancement have brought not only positive impacts but also serious challenges, such as increasing social conflicts, moral degradation, individualism, and the weakening of social awareness within society. In this context, Buddhism offers universal ethical guidance that remains relevant across time, particularly through the principles of compassion (karuṇā), loving-kindness (mettā), wisdom (paññā), and mental equanimity (upekkhā), which guide individuals toward harmonious and responsible living. This study aims to analyze the role of Buddhist values in providing solutions to contemporary social problems. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method based on library research, using a hermeneutic approach to Buddhist sacred texts and relevant scientific studies. The findings indicate that the application of Buddhist values contributes significantly to the development of social morality, the strengthening of social solidarity, conflict resolution, and the formation of individual character marked by empathy, tolerance, and responsibility. Furthermore, these values play an essential role in fostering interreligious harmony and cultivating collective awareness of the importance of peaceful coexistence within pluralistic and multicultural societies.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of understanding the Heart Sutra within the framework of Humanistic Buddhism, especially for students of Buddhist religious education. The main problem lies in the limited understanding of the relevance of the Heart Sutra to humanistic values in the context of modern life. This study aims to explain the relevance of the Heart Sutra teachings in building applicable spiritual, ethical, and social awareness. The method used is a literature study with a descriptive qualitative approach through text analysis and academic literature review. Data were obtained from primary sources in the form of translations of the Heart Sutra and secondary sources including journals, books, and scientific articles related to Humanistic Buddhism. The results of the study show that the teachings of sunyata (emptiness) in the Heart Sutra not only have profound philosophical meaning, but also provide practical implications in everyday life. The Heart Sutra is able to strengthen the philosophical foundation of Humanistic Buddhism, foster an attitude of compassion, wisdom, and tolerance, and serve as a relevant ethical guideline in facing the dynamics and challenges of modern society.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic aspects of the Citta Vagga (Mind Chapter) verses of the Dhammapada scriptures, focusing on the analysis of the meaning of keywords, symbolism, and philosophical interpretations in the text. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach based on semantic analysis combined with hermeneutic methods to uncover the deep contextual meanings in Buddhist teachings. This study focuses on central concepts such as citta (mind), dukkha (suffering), and nibbana (liberation), as well as how the use of metaphor, personification, and repetition in the text helps convey the spiritual message and wisdom of the Buddha. The results of the study show that the layers of meaning in the Citta Vagga are very complex and rich in symbolic elements that refer to mind control as the core of Buddhist teachings. Furthermore, this research reveals the intricate relationship between linguistic structures and spiritual doctrines, demonstrating how ancient Pali texts employ sophisticated rhetorical devices to transmit timeless wisdom across generations.

Abstract

The semantic study of religious texts is becoming increasingly important in understanding the meaning of spiritual teachings in a deep, contextual, and relevant way to current developments. This article aims to analyze the semantic aspects of Buddhist texts, emphasizing the meaning, symbolism, and interpretation of key terms. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a hermeneutic method to examine key concepts such as dukkha, nirvana, and samsara found in classical Buddhist texts, including the Dhammapada, the Lotus Sutra, and the Abhidhamma. The analysis shows that the meaning of terms in Buddhist texts is not static or merely literal, but rather contains symbolic, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions that develop according to cultural, social, and historical contexts. These findings confirm that a semantic approach can enrich the understanding of Buddhist teachings, broaden the horizons of religious interpretation, and bridge the relevance of Buddhist values in modern human life.
