Abstract

This research aims to examine the low interest in reading among Nias University students. Several factors that influence the low interest in reading are the development of digital technology, dependence on instant information via the internet, and the perception that reading is boring and takes up a lot of time. The research results show that students read entertainment content such as novels and comics more often than textbooks. Efforts to increase interest in reading must include promoting a reading culture, providing access to interesting reading materials, as well as support from the campus environment. It is hoped that this research can provide a solution in increasing students' reading interest.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the relationship between lecturers' teaching methods and the development of student competencies in higher education. Student competencies include critical thinking skills, communication skills, problem solving abilities, and other practical skills needed in the professional world. This article uses a literature review approach that analyzes several relevant studies on the influence of various teaching methods, such as lectures, group discussions, problem-based learning (PBL), and project-based learning (PJBL), on the development of student competencies. Based on existing studies, it was found that interactive learning methods based on student participation, such as PBL and PJBL, have a more significant impact on student competence compared to conventional lecture methods. These results provide important insights for the development of higher education curricula to improve the quality of student competencies.

Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of students' lives, offering various benefits yet also challenges that affect their productivity. This study aims to explore the role of social media in enhancing or hindering student productivity by examining positive aspects such as access to information, collaboration, and social networking, as well as negative impacts like distraction, decreased study quality, and a tendency to procrastinate. The analysis results indicate that social media can boost productivity when used for academic purposes, group discussions, and sharing educational information. However, social media can also become a hindrance when overused, leading to dependency or being utilized solely for entertainment. Factors such as usage duration, purpose, and time management play an important role in determining its positive or negative impacts. With a better understanding of the role of social media, students are expected to use it more wisely to support their academic productivity.

Abstract

Student activity in organizations plays an important role in developing knowledge and preparing them to enter the world of work. Through organizations, students are accustomed to conveying thoughts and ideas that can increase self-confidence and motivation to learn, which has a positive impact on academic achievement. This research aims to examine the role of student organizations in supporting student abilities, using descriptive methods. The research sample consisted of 10 students from the 2022/2023 information technology study program. The research results show that there is a significant influence between student involvement in student organizations on their learning achievement. Student organizations provide opportunities for students to develop their talents, interests and potential through productive, creative and practical activities carried out on campus, for example extracurricular activities, which in turn increase motivation and academic achievement. In addition, involvement in an organization can shape character, skills, self-confidence, as well as expand knowledge, insight and social networks. This research also reveals that students are involved in organizations not only for existence or popularity, but as a form of self-actualization. Therefore, it is recommended that the campus, such as the Deputy Chair III for Student Affairs and Study Programs, provide further support to encourage student organization activities that can improve student achievement. Overall, this research shows that involvement in student organizations has a significant positive relationship with learning motivation, which influences academic quality and preparation for the world of work.

Abstract

Character is an important aspect that influences the development of an individual's personality in the campus environment. As a place for intellectual, social, and emotional growth, the campus plays a strategic role in shaping students' character. Good character not only supports academic success but also shapes students' attitudes and behaviors in their social lives. In the campus environment, students are faced with various challenges that test their morals and ethics, such as plagiarism, substance abuse, and violations of rules. Therefore, it is important to develop a strong and positive character through integrated character education in campus activities. Character enhancement can be achieved through both formal and non-formal learning, as well as an environment that supports the formation of such character. With good character, students will be able to face life's challenges wisely and contribute positively to society.

Abstract

This study analyzes the literature on solid-state physics and its contributions to the development of semiconductor technology. Solid-state physics examines the properties and behaviors of materials in the solid phase, which is crucial for understanding electronic phenomena within semiconductors. The aim of this research is to explore various models and theories that explain material characteristics, including free electron theory and crystal structure, as well as their applications in semiconductor devices such as transistors and diodes. The method employed is a literature review of relevant sources. The analysis results indicate that a deep understanding of crystal structure and electrical properties of materials can enhance efficiency and innovation in semiconductor technology. This study also highlights the importance of the interaction between solid-state physics theory and material engineering practices in creating better semiconductor devices. The conclusion of this research is that solid-state physics plays a key role in the development of semiconductor technology, and the integration of theory with practical applications is essential to drive further innovations in this field.

Abstract

The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon where electrons are emitted from a metal surface when exposed to light of a certain frequency. Research indicates that the kinetic energy of the emitted electrons depends on the light frequency rather than its intensity. In the context of sensor technology, the photoelectric effect is utilized in various applications such as light sensors, digital cameras, and solar panels. The use of interactive simulations, such as PhET, has proven effective in enhancing students' understanding of this concept. The analysis reveals that while students' comprehension of the photoelectric effect remains low, employing educational tools like simulations can significantly aid in physics learning and its practical applications.

Abstract

Co-firing of coal and biomass in an existing coal fired power plant is being considered as a viable alternative to transition from non-renewable-to-renewable energy utilization. In this regard, various researches have been conducted in the last twenty years, in most of which the general conclusion is that the boiler efficiency decreases with respect to increasing biomass percentage in co-firing, nonetheless, additional study is deemed to be required, especially for waste biomass which are abundantly available in Indonesia. The waste biomass to be employed in this study are palm empty fruit bunch (EFB), rice husk, and wood pellet produced from sawdust. Co-firing combustion thermodynamic characteristics which are to be deployed in this study are air-to-fuel ratio (AFR), combustion CO2 emission, and adiabatic flame temperature. An open source CoolProp of thermodynamics properties formulations were implemented in order to evaluate thermodynamic properties of corresponding materials involved in this study. The results of the study show that AFR decreases with increasing biomass composition in the fuel, where the AFR rate of change per percent of biomassa are -0.018, -0.0406, and -0.026 for blend of coal-EFB, coal-rice husk, and coalwood, respectively. Abstract

Along with the quality of service that continues to increase from year to year, it is necessary to reanalyze (evaluation) to determine the condition and readiness of the equipment to maintain continuity and the electric power system in the process of sending the electric power. To maintain the continuity and reliability of theprocess of distributing electric power in the electric power system, therefore various protection systems are needed from disturbances that may arise.20 kV distribution network on a transformer 30 MVA TFT 1 70/20 kV 30 MVA using a safety system Ground Fault Relay (GFR) that is used to detect the smallest current.. This study uses a Neutral Grounding Resistor (NGR) and solid neutral grounding system to determine the proper setting of the GFR while the single-phase short circuit to ground fault occurs and to determine the effect of relay adjustment when using a neutral grounding system by simulating ETAP 12.6. The maximum fault current of a single- phase short circuit with the direct grounding method is 1.15 kA, while the maximum fault current with the NGR grounding method is 0.235 kA. At the Bolok – Tenau III connection, the relay working time setting obtained from the solid grounding system is 0.5 s, and the relay working time setting obtained from the NGR grounding system is 0.5. In this case, the grounding method using a Neutral Grounding Resistor is more effective for neutral grounding of the transformer because it can reduce the short circuit current that occurs so that it does not endanger humans or nearby equipment.

Abstract

Practical work has been carried out on the Application of Diffraction and Light Interference Phenomena in Measuring the diameter of thin objects. This practicum aims to understand diffraction events and light interference, understand the application of interference diffraction to measure the thickness of thin objects, and find out the factors that influence diffraction events and light interference. Diffraction and interference can occur simultaneously when light passes through a narrow slit or thin object and combines to form a new light wave. This practicum uses the principle of superposition of light waves, using light as a wave so that it can create superposition phenomena and their derivatives, namely diffraction and interference. This practicum can be done by preparing tools and materials, then arranging the tools and materials according to the scheme. Then the physical parameters in this experiment were measured and recorded, namely the distance from the laser to the object, the distance from the object to the screen, and the distance created between the light patterns and the central light. The variations used are variations in thin objects, namely guitar strings and copper cables and variations in the distance of the object to the screen. From the experiments that have been carried out it can be concluded that diffraction and light interference events are the nature of light as a wave which has the principle of superposition. By applying the phenomena of diffraction and interference, the diameter of an object can be determined. From the practicum that has been carried out, data is obtained in the form of distances between orders or light-dark patterns that are formed. For variations of guitar strings, the diameter is 0.13 mm. while for the copper cable variation, the diameter is found to be 0.77 mm.
