Abstract

Phonetics, a crucial aspect of linguistics, plays a significant role in language acquisition and proficiency. This systematic literature review investigates emerging trends in phonetics research from 2019 to 2024, focusing on the impact of orthographic forms on second language (L2) phonological representation and processing. Utilizing tools like Publish or Perish, with tiw database crossreff (1000) and google schooler (230) and total 1230 (n=16) studies to explore how orthographic inputs affect L2 learners' speech perception, production, phonological awareness, and lexical learning. Our findings reveal that orthographic forms can override phonological inputs, leading to persistent effects despite extensive exposure and formal teaching. This study highlights the necessity of incorporating orthographic considerations into phonetic and phonological instruction to enhance L2 learning outcomes. Furthermore, it examines the role of technology, such as YouTube and AI-driven platforms, and innovative pedagogical strategies, including embodied cognition, in improving phonetic education. By aligning with similar studies, this research reinforces the pervasive influence of orthography on L2 phonological development and underscores the importance of developing comprehensive teaching strategies. In the larger context, these findings contribute valuable insights to the field of phonetics and language education, emphasizing the need for tailored educational methods that address orthographic influences, ultimately leading to more effective language learning practices globally. Future research should explore a wider range of languages and orthographic systems, employing longitudinal and experimental designs to deepen the understanding of orthographic effects on phonological development.

Abstract

In literary studies, narratology provides tools to dissect such complex narrative structures. A.J. Greimas’s actantial and functional models offer a systematic approach to analyze the roles of characters and the progression of events within a story. This research discusses about actantial and functional model in Karen M. Mcmanus’s One of Us is Lying. This research aims to explain and describe the role of actant and functional model by Greimas’ narrative in shaping the mystery novel. The theory and approach used as a guide to analyse and describe how the structure of mystery fiction portrayed in this novel. Descriptive qualitative is used in this research. The findings of this research show that is total one main actant and functional scheme. The results of this research show that functional model depict dynamic character interactions and plot progression, driven by factors of shifts in time and place, new events, character arguments, character’s arrivals, and conflicts that significantly develop the plot and heighten the tension of the mystery fiction. Among the six actants, the helper actant is plays important role, assisting the subject actant in obtaining their goals through necessary clues and information. Without the helper, the subject would struggle to solve the mystery.

Abstract

In the context of digital globalization, this study explores the role of YouTube as a self-directed learning (SDL) tool to enhance speaking proficiency among English Education students at Citra Bangsa University in Indonesia. Recognizing that classroom-based speaking practice is often limited by structural and pedagogical constraints, the research investigates how learners independently engage with YouTube to improve pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and confidence. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from the sixth-semester students through semi-structured interviews, reflective journals, and speaking practice logs over a six-week period. Thematic analysis revealed that students employed diverse strategies such as imitation, shadowing, monologue creation, and video-based roleplay, drawing on a wide range of content from educational channels like BBC Learning English to informal vlogs and podcasts. Participants reported increased engagement, language awareness, and motivation. However, they also faced challenges including lack of feedback, difficulty in selecting level-appropriate materials, and digital distractions. Despite these limitations, the overall attitude toward YouTube-based learning was positive, highlighting the platform's potential to supplement formal instruction. The findings suggest that YouTube can serve as an effective tool for promoting learner autonomy and speaking competence when integrated with structured support and digital literacy training. This study contributes to the growing discourse on technology-enhanced language learning and underscores the need for guided self-directed learning models in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study examines class conflict in Qaisra Shahraz's short story Zamindar's Wife (2013) through Marxist literary criticism. Employing qualitative content analysis based on Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels' class conflict theory, the research identifies two primary manifestations of exploitation: psychological coercion through which the landlord Sarfaraz manipulates villagers into selling their land, and ideological resistance by Younis, an educated villager who challenges feudal authority. The analysis reveals that Sarfaraz's lavish dinner invitation serves as a tool of domination, creating false obligations that pressure economically dependent villagers into compliance. Conversely, Younis's refusal to attend the dinner and his rejection of land transfer agreements demonstrate how education fosters class consciousness, enabling the oppressed to recognize and resist structural inequalities. The findings highlight education as a critical catalyst for class resistance, illustrating that awareness transforms individual defiance into collective challenge against entrenched feudal systems. This research contributes to literary scholarship by offering a comprehensive Marxist analysis of class dynamics in South Asian literature, expanding beyond previous gender-focused interpretations to examine structural economic inequalities underlying social conflicts.

Abstract

Self-concept refers to an individual’s perceptions and beliefs about themselves. It has a significant influence on an individual’s personality and behavior, which in turn affects the way they form social relationships. In My Lady Jane (2024), the people are divided into two groups: regular human beings called Verities and a group of people who can transform into animals called Ethians. This study aims to explore the portrayal of Guildford Dudley’s self-concept development as an Ethian and how it affects his romantic relationship with a Verity named Jane Grey. By using a film analysis approach, this study utilizes subtitles as the main data and scenes screenshots as supporting data. This study employs Carl Rogers’ theory of self-concept (1959) to reveal how My Lady Jane (2024) portrays Guildford Dudley’s self-concept as a journey toward self-acceptance. This study also reveals how Guildford Dudley’s self-concept as an Ethian leads his relationship with Jane Grey through every stage and at the same time is affected by it.

Abstract

This study explores the character development of Jin Kazama in Tekken 8 as a narrative representation of Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of individuation. Utilizing a qualitative textual analysis, the research examines key narrative moments, character interactions, and symbolic visual design from the game’s story mode. The analysis focuses on Jungian archetypes—such as the Shadow, the Anima, the Wise Old Man, and the Self—to trace Jin’s psychological transformation. The findings reveal that Jin’s internal conflict with the Devil Gene symbolizes his confrontation with the Shadow, while his emotional encounter with his mother, Jun Kazama, reflects the integration of the Anima. Guidance from the character Leroy Smith further illustrates the influence of the Wise Old Man archetype, culminating in Jin’s integration of the Self, represented visually by his dual wings. Through this lens, Tekken 8 becomes a rich modern allegory of self-discovery and psychological wholeness, demonstrating how video games can portray complex theoretical concepts in an accessible and emotionally engaging form.

Abstract

This research analyzes Inside Out 2 (2024), directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Pixar, through Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic concepts of the Id, Ego, and Superego. Focusing on Riley’s emotional journey through adolescence, the film explores how it conveys complex psychological ideas through animation. Using a Freudian lens, the study examines narrative elements, character dynamics, and emotional interactions. While previous research has explored symbolism and emotional expression in the film, few studies have directly linked them to Freudian theory. This study fills that gap by analyzing selected scenes and character relationships through a psychoanalytic literary lens. By viewing emotions like Joy and Anxiety as representations of the mind’s structure, the thesis argues that the film effectively adapts Freudian theory for modern audiences. Ultimately, it contributes to discussions on the intersection of psychology, media, highlighting the film's value in illustrating emotional and cognitive development.

Abstract

The Pursuit of Happiness is a biopic film released in 2006 and directed by Gabriele Muccino. The film depicts social mobility and various issues related to a stratified society. This study examines how Chris Gardner embodied social mobility and the factors behind it. The data was derived from monologues, dialogues, and narrative segments in film scripts. Furthermore, the analysis employed the close reading method alongside Sorokin’s theory of social mobility as articulated in “Social and Cultural Mobility” (1959). The findings portrayed how Chris Gardner’s experience embodies social mobility, particularly upward mobility. This can be observed by his shift from a lower class (homelessness, financial instability, and unpaid internships) to an upper class (securing a permanent position as a stockbroker and successfully founding his own stock company). Moreover, the causes of this upward mobility include an environmental change (entering the stockbroker profession), differences between parents and their children (variations in characteristics between Chris and his parents), and defective social distribution (possessing talents and abilities confined to the upper classes).

Abstract

This study analyzes how audiences respond to violent portrayals in dark romance content on TikTok using Stuart Hall’s (1980) encoding-decoding theory as the main framework. Audience reactions are categorized into three positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. The data consists of five selected TikTok posts under the hashtag #darkromance, with the three most-liked comments from each post (fifteen in total) examined through qualitative content analysis. The focus of the analysis is on textual elements such as captions, hashtags, and written comments, supported by visual cues when relevant. The findings reveal that audience responses vary depending on how the content is framed and what narrative style is used. When violent themes appear in book-promotional posts, audiences more often adopt an oppositional stance, expressing disapproval or discomfort. In contrast, the same themes packaged as fantasy or POV-style content are more likely to be accepted, generating dominant-hegemonic reactions. Among the 15 analyzed comments, eight reflect oppositional positions, five are dominant-hegemonic, and two are negotiated. Interestingly, oppositional comments received the highest number of likes, suggesting that a silent majority may support these critical views even if they are not the loudest voices. Overall, this study highlights that TikTok users are not passive content consumers but active meaning-makers whose responses are shaped by context and content framing. It is recommended that future research expand this topic by incorporating audio elements, conducting interviews with audiences and creators, or exploring similar phenomena on other new media platforms to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

Personality is inherently adaptive, often shifting in response to environmental demands to meet expectations, gain recognition, and ensure survival. This concept is illustrated through the character of Evelyn Hugo, a Hollywood actress whose life is fraught with drama and controversy, in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This study adopts a psychoanalytic approach grounded in Carl Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious to examine how archetypes are represented in Evelyn’s character. It further investigates the extent to which her past experiences shape the emergence of these archetypes. The analysis draws upon selected dialogues, monologues, and narrative elements that align with the study’s objectives. The findings reveal that Evelyn’s personality is expressed through four major Jungian archetypes: persona, shadow, animus, and self, all of which are significantly influenced by her psychological trauma and formative life experiences.
