Abstract

This study explores the representation of beauty concept in Indonesian advertisements, with a focus on Citra's "Ragam Cantik Indonesia" advertisement, through the lens of Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. However, there is a gap in understanding how these beauty standards are constructed and communicated, particularly in the context of local brands like Citra. This research aims to fill this gap by analyzing the denotative, connotative, and myth to uncover the Indonesian beauty concept in Citra brand advertisement. The advertisement seeks to highlight the racial and cultural diversity of Indonesia, presenting a variety of beauty standards. It features models with diverse characteristics, including fair, brown, and dark skin tones, as well as straight, curly, and hijab-wearing hair styles. This selection clearly represents the multifaceted concept of beauty in Indonesia. Additionally, the ad aims to challenge the prevailing myth that ideal beauty is synonymous with having white skin.

Abstract

This article explores the matter of purity in Honore de Balzac’s flash fiction entitled Innocence. Purity refers to the idea that certain actions or behaviors are considered morally pure or impure based on societal norms and values. Innocence is a Honore de Balzac’s flash fiction that talks about innocence or a high curiosity spirit possessed by children. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, it is analyzed through this flash fiction that innocence is the main symbol of purity. Little Francis and Margot are two little pure spirits who live. They try new things. They notice a portrait of two figures, which is actually an image of Adam and Eve. However, because the children's minds have not matured enough and they have not been exposed to more knowledge, they do not recognize which one is Adam and which is Eve, because the figure does not wear clothes, therefore Little Francis and Margot are unsure which is Adam and which is Eve. The purity of the children is a direct mirror of innocence, which is the essence of Balzac's flash fiction. Children will only know some things because they are still pure. Purity is a natural aspect that all children have. In conclusion, adult people will laugh at them, but the children are still pure since they reflect their childhood matters.

Abstract

Nature has endowed humans with the resources humans need to continue their lives. However, excessive use of natural resources damages nature. For a long time, the issue of exploitation of natural resources and the negative impacts of exploitation of natural resources has been a frequently discussed topic. People who care about natural conditions often try to increase public awareness about protecting nature. One way to increase awareness of nature is through literary works. This study examines the depiction of nature exploitation in one form of literary work, namely movies. In this study, researcher used ‘The Sea Beast 2022’ movie as a research object. This used an ecocritical approach as a theory to analyze the exploitation of nature in ‘The Sea Beast’ 2022 movie. Apart from using ecocritical theory, the researcher also used a movie studies approach to analyze data. The results of this research show that there is exploitation of nature in the form of exploitation of wild animals depicted as sea beasts. Evidence of animal exploitation is that hunters use several weapons in hunting. Hunters use these weapons to paralyze sea beasts. Apart from that, hunters also disobey the principles of animal welfare. Apart from showing the existence of animal exploitation, in this study, the researchers also analyzed the main character's efforts to stop animal exploitation.

Abstract

This study applies Michel Foucault's power relation and Gayatri C. Spivak's subaltern theory to analyze the power dynamics and representation of subaltern voices in the 2019 Indian movie Dream Girl. The movie, directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, depicts the complex power structures connected to gender and class in Indian culture. It follows Karamveer Singh, who adopts a female persona to work as a phone entertainer. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to examine significant scenes and discussions, with the goal of determining how Karamveer's gender performance both challenges and intersects with subaltern concerns. The study evaluates how the movie portrays marginalized voices and identities by drawing on Spivak's definition of the subaltern and Foucault's theory of power as pervasive and interconnected. The results demonstrate that the Dream Girl movie highlights the challenges subaltern groups have in reclaiming agency within these power structures while also criticizing the rigidity of gender binaries. The movie illustrates how dominant cultural narratives filter and, in some situations, quiet marginalized voices and how power can be both repressive and constructive. This study contributes to the discussion of how popular movies can serve as platforms for marginalized voices to be represented and a site of resistance.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the indicators of ambition for fame, how ambition is reflected, and why ambition for fame is reflected in Black Swan, a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky. The analysis of the ambition for fame in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan movie is the research problem. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. To analyze the data, the researcher used Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory. The data was collected by taking notes and doing library research. The theory posits three fundamental concepts: the Id, Ego, and Superego. The result shows that Nina Sayer's id is subconsciously driven by a deep desire for perfection in the ballet world and her ambition to become a swan queen. The Ego can be seen in Nina, who tries to fulfill her strong desires with many demands from her mother. The Superego can be seen in that Nina is under pressure from her mom, so she feels depressed. So it can be concluded that the ambition for fame in Black Swan movie can be reflected in Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory.
