Abstract

This paper discusses the sociology of space which is a part or extension of sociology that uses geographical theories, especially human geography, economic geography, and feminist geography. The scope of the study targets various social practices, the dynamics of the power of social institutions and spatial dialectics as a form of human interaction with space. This type of research is descriptive research using data obtained from studies of various literature both in scientific journal articles, popular scientific articles, books, and other types of written works. As a library research, data analysis is carried out by comparing it with other sources that study similar contexts. The results of the study show that for quite a long time, the sociology of space has played an important role and contributed positively in providing a new nuance to the study of social sciences and even space is considered an important part of the process of forming sociological theories. The interdisciplinary characteristics of the sociology of space, in its development, are greatly inspired by the theories of Marxism and Postcolonialism and in the scope of its study there is much overlap with geography and architecture.

Abstract

Social and cultural changes in urban communities have been influenced by the growth of social media. The purpose of this study is to see how social media affects the values, habits, and interaction patterns of people in urban environments. This study uses a qualitative approach to study the literature. Data were collected from various academic sources and related reports. The study shows that social media not only accelerates the exchange of information, but also has an impact on a person's lifestyle, cultural identity, and social relationships. Social media encourages modernization and globalization on the one hand, but also causes problems such as disinformation, individualism, and the destruction of local culture on the other. This study found that social media plays an important role in the socio-cultural changes of urban communities, so digital literacy is needed to maximize its benefits and reduce its negative effects.

Abstract

The sociology of space has so far made important contributions to the development of social theories, especially the study of urban society, public space, and urban planning. This paper discusses some of the pioneers of the sociology of space, the social reality in which they live that influences their spatial imagination, and their written works. This type of research is a literature review in the form of tracing sources through the review of books, articles, and other types of scientific works. The results showed that there are several people who are famous as pioneers of this type of sociology, namely: Georg Simmel, Michael Foucault, Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, Manuel Castells, Edward Soja, Martina Low, and Doreen Massey. Each of these pioneers, either separately or together, gave a distinctive color to the study of sociology using the auxiliary sciences of geography and architecture. The discussion of the pioneering figures of the sociology of space will also facilitate readers in the theoretical categorization process of who influenced what figures and was influenced by whose figures as “narrators”.

Abstract

Such rapid changes due to urbanization in Makassar City have in fact affected many aspects, including social, economic, and environmental. This study aims to describe and analyze the effects of urbanization on environmental quality in Makassar City, with a focus on air and water pollution, and reduced green open space. The research method used is a quantitative approach through secondary data analysis from observations, field surveys, interviews and related agency documents. The findings of this study indicate how high levels of urbanization are related to increased air pollution from vehicle emissions, reduced water quality due to unmanaged household waste, and the conversion of green areas into residential areas and infrastructure. Likewise, uncontrolled population growth in turn exacerbates pressure on natural resources and urban sanitation systems. A recommendation offered from the results of this study is the importance of sustainable land use policies, strengthening environmental laws, and increasing public awareness..

Abstract

The development of society and social changes resulting from advances in information technology today make multicultural education an urgent necessity, especially for urban communities living in an environment of diversity in terms of ethnicity, culture, religion, and language. The dynamics of urbanization, which give rise to increasingly complex social interactions, are highly susceptible to friction between groups if not accompanied by mutual understanding and respect among community members. This paper discusses the importance of multicultural education, particularly in shaping awareness, tolerance, and adaptability among urban communities. Through a literature review approach, this paper builds the perception that multicultural education actually functions not only as a means of introducing cultural differences in diversity, but also as a strategy to strengthen social cohesion, reduce discrimination, and create social harmony in urban public spaces. The results of the discussion show that, conceptually, multicultural education has a strategic role in building an inclusive, fair urban society that is capable of facing various challenges of globalization

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the symbolic meaning of Tau-Tau (wooden statues depicting the deceased) in the narrative of spatial awareness among the Toraja people. Using a sociological approach, this study explores the existence of Tau-tau, which not only serves as a physical representation of the deceased, but also acts as a symbolic marker that actively shapes the collective understanding of space. In this context, the spaces referred to are sacred spaces (the spirit world), social spaces (settlements and ceremonial sites), and cosmological spaces. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques involving participant observation and in-depth interviews with traditional elders, families who own Tau-Tau, and the general public in Tana Toraja. The results of the study reveal that the presence of Tau-Tau on the cliffs of burial grounds in the hills creates a cultural landscape that connects the world of the living with the world of the ancestors. Tau-tau become silent but powerful narrators that affirm social hierarchy, family status, and the continuity of the relationship between the living and the dead. In the context of Toraja community spatial awareness, this is a complex socio-cultural construction, in which tau-tau function as key elements in interpreting, regulating, and animating that space. The main contribution of this research is to provide a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural dynamics of local communities, particularly regarding the interrelationship between symbols, space, and social structures

Abstract

Ahmadin's book "Sociology of Space: Concepts, Theories, and Case Studies" responds to academic concerns about the frequent understanding of space as merely a passive physical entity. This book envisions space as a dynamic social product, imbued with power relations, and a battleground for meaning. Through a comprehensive study approach, Ahmadin takes readers on an exploration of how spaces—from cities and villages to malls and sidewalks to parks—are produced, consumed, and reproduced through social relations. The book is structured in a well-organized manner, beginning with a conceptual mapping and the roots of sociological thought in space, exploring key theories from leading thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, and Michel Foucault, and concluding with a depiction of reality in various case studies of several cities in Indonesia.
