Abstract

The global issue of plastic pollution in oceans has gained significant attention, particularly in Indonesia, which boasts the second-longest coastline worldwide and grapples with severe threats to its marine biodiversity. Consequently, this study endeavors to transform plastic waste into three-dimensional artworks as a campaign medium to address marine ecosystem degradation. The creative process is structured into three distinct stages: pre-creation, creation, and post-creation. Data analysis in this study employs descriptive qualitative analysis with an artistic reflection approach. This involves interpreting data derived from literature studies, observations, experiments, and documentation to comprehend the transformation of plastic waste into three-dimensional artworks and evaluate the alignment between the concept, visual representation, and the campaign message regarding marine ecosystem damage. The creation process yields two three-dimensional artworks that visually depict the suffering of marine biota due to plastic pollution through symbolic and critical visual approaches. The incorporation of octopus and orca whale figures as symbols reinforces the narrative of entrapment, vulnerability, and mortality of marine biota caused by human-generated plastic waste. In summary, these artworks not only possess aesthetic value but also serve as effective visual communication media for conveying social criticism and moral messages to the audience. Furthermore, they encourage societal awareness and behavioral change in reducing the consumption of single-use plastics, thereby contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems’ sustainability.

Abstract

This research is a literature review that aims to explore the mosaic technique as a form of fine art expression that emphasizes the combination of colors, shapes, and textures in creating aesthetic value, as well as a means of developing students' creativity. Mosaic is a technique of arranging small pieces of materials such as paper, glass, or ceramics into a complete and harmonious image. In the context of art education, this technique not only functions as a medium of expression, but also as a vehicle for fostering students' creativity, imagination, and visual thinking skills. The method used in this research is a literature review, namely a systematic study of various research results, books, and scientific articles that discuss the application of mosaic techniques in fine art learning and the development of creativity. Data were collected through searching various relevant literature sources, then analyzed descriptively to identify key findings related to the benefits of mosaic techniques in art learning. The results of the study indicate that the application of mosaic techniques has great potential in improving students' creativity, accuracy, patience, and aesthetic sensitivity. Working with mosaics provides an opportunity for students to experiment freely with color, shape, and composition, while simultaneously fostering an appreciative attitude towards works of art. Thus, the mosaic technique can be used as an alternative strategy for learning fine arts that is effective and meaningful for developing students' creative potential.

Abstract

This research departs from the problem of the fading tradition of the Lesung Panjang tradition in Mandi Angin, Kinali District, Pasaman Barat, Sumatera barat, Indonesia as a result of changes in technology and people's lifestyles. The long mortar, which used to function as a tool for processing communal rice as well as a medium for forming the value of togetherness, symbolism, and sound aesthetics, now only appears in a limited way in traditional activities. The urgency of this research lies in the urgent need to revitalize the long dlet not only as a cultural object, but as an intangible cultural heritage that contains visual, social, and symbolic value. The research gap was found in the lack of studies that placed Lesung Panjang in the perspective of fine arts and multisensory aesthetics, especially related to visual forms, sound rhythms, and accompanying social structures. This research aims to re-examine the symbolic meaning, aesthetic value, and social function of long dimples through an art approach as a cultural revitalization strategy. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with an ethnographic design of art. The data source consists of primary data in the form of observations and in-depth interviews with community leaders, as well as secondary data in the form of documentation and literature studies. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation, with data analysis through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawn, as well as testing the validity of data using source triangulation. The results of the study showed that the Lesung Panjang has a strong visual and sound aesthetic value, representing the collective work structure and symbolic value of society. This research contributes to enriching the study of cultural revitalization based on fine art and recommends further research on the development of educational media and art works based on local traditions.

Abstract

This study explores the utilization of fashion waste in the design of sustainable interior products through the development and adaptation of sewing and pattern-making techniques traditionally used in the fashion industry. A qualitative experimental approach and practice-based design methodology were applied to select textile waste from local producers and artisans, modify sewing techniques such as sashiko, and create functional interior products. The resulting prototypes were systematically evaluated by experts to assess aesthetic quality, structural integrity, and material efficiency, ensuring that claims regarding the aesthetic value of the products are supported by empirical evidence. The findings indicate that with proper technique modification and material selection, fashion waste can be transformed into environmentally friendly interior products that align with the principles of eco-design, sustainable design, and circular economy practices. The involvement of local SMEs and artisans in the production process generated positive socio-economic impacts, including job creation, economic empowerment, and increased public awareness of sustainable consumption. Overall, this study confirms that the utilization of fashion waste in interior design provides both environmental and socio-economic benefits, promotes sustainable consumption and production in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, and offers practical insights for designers, manufacturers, and policymakers interested in circular design and the sustainable creative industry.
