Abstract

The rapid advancement of science and technology has produced both significant progress and complex challenges, including value crises, cultural commodification, and dehumanization. In this context, art should be understood not merely as aesthetic expression or a creative industry product, but as a value-oriented cultural praxis. This study aims to examine the urgency of an axiological approach to art development and to formulate a conceptual framework that positions ethical, aesthetic, social, and spiritual values as its normative foundation. A qualitative descriptive design was employed using library research through a critical review of literature on the philosophy of science, philosophy of art, and critical social theory. The findings indicate that without a clear axiological foundation, art risks being reduced to an economic instrument, thereby losing its reflective, critical, and emancipatory functions. The study proposes four integrated axiological dimensions for art development: (1) the aesthetic-reflective dimension, which views art as a transformative and reflective experience; (2) the ethical dimension, emphasizing moral responsibility in artistic practice; (3) the social-communicative dimension, positioning art as a medium for dialogue, cultural interaction, and social criticism; and (4) the spiritual-existential dimension, which regards art as a means of seeking meaning and promoting human flourishing. These dimensions reinforce the role of art as a value-based social praxis that fosters critical awareness and supports the sustainability of human values. This framework contributes to the philosophy of art by providing a normative reference for artistic practice, cultural policy, and future studies grounded in humanistic values.

Abstract

This film explores the intricacies of a marriage that faces challenges due to ineffective communication and the accumulation of suppressed emotions between the characters, Charlie Barber and Nicole Barber. This study seeks to analyze the portrayal of emotions in divorce conflicts depicted in Noah Baumbach’s film, Marriage Story. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method utilizing Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which focuses on the analysis of denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings within visual and narrative signs. Data collection was conducted through the observation of several pivotal scenes that illustrate the emotional evolution of the characters, encompassing the initial phase of relationship warmth, the emergence of conflict, the culmination of arguments, and the stage of acceptance. Data analysis in this study was conducted through a multi-step process, including sign identification, denotative analysis, connotative analysis, and myth analysis. The research findings reveal that the representation of emotions in film is conveyed not solely through dialogue but also through visual signs such as facial expressions, body movements, spatial composition, and character interactions. These signs generate connotative meanings that encapsulate the complexity of emotions in divorce, including a sense of loss, anger, regret, and lingering affection. Furthermore, films depict divorce as an emotional process that is not linear but dynamic and ambivalent, wherein both characters experience internal conflict. This study is anticipated to contribute to the field of visual communication studies, particularly in comprehending the representation of emotions within film.

Abstract

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder characterized by a lateral curvature exceeding 10 degrees and is prevalent among adolescents during growth. Observations and questionnaires indicate that teenagers aged 13–15 continue to engage in habits that pose a risk for scoliosis, such as slouching while seated, utilizing devices with poor posture, and carrying heavy bags on one shoulder. This study seeks to design the educational campaign “SiSko – Scoliosis Alert” as a visual communication tool to raise awareness among Surabaya teenagers regarding the significance of maintaining good posture as a preventive measure against scoliosis. The research methodology employed a qualitative approach through interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), observations, and questionnaires with teenagers aged 13–15 in Surabaya. The analysis revealed that the majority of teenagers possess an understanding of scoliosis, yet they continue to disregard good posture habits due to comfort and a lack of long-term awareness. Based on these findings, the keyword “Caution That Saves” was formulated as the foundation for developing the verbal and visual concept of the campaign. The campaign design “SiSko – Scoliosis Alert” was realized through visual media such as Instagram feeds, Instagram Stories, posters, and leaflets, employing persuasive and emotional approaches tailored to teenagers’ characteristics.

Abstract

In the realm of healthcare facilities, accessibility is commonly perceived as a physical and technical condition, often evaluated through spatial standards and design compliance. However, such an approach tends to overlook the intricate nature of real user interactions within healthcare settings. This study endeavors to investigate accessibility as a relational and experiential process, specifically focusing on the interaction between patients, caregivers, and space within the outpatient installation of Regional General Hospital dr. Iskak. Employing a qualitative approach within a design anthropology perspective, this research utilizes limited participatory observation, visual documentation, and field notes to gather data from patients with mobility impairments and their caregivers. The analysis employs a thick description approach to interpret behavioral patterns, spatial negotiation, and user experiences in actual use settings. The findings reveal that accessibility is not an isolated individual condition but is constructed through the relational interaction between patients and caregivers. Spatial use is characterized by distributed activities, role negotiation, and adaptive behaviors in response to spatial constraints. Users actively appropriate space and reorganize spatial use to maintain comfort and coordination, indicating that accessibility emerges through everyday practices and embodied interaction. This study underscores the limitations of conventional universal design approaches, which primarily concentrate on individual users and physical standards. It proposes a shift toward contextual, interaction-based, and experience-oriented design frameworks that more accurately reflect real-use conditions. These findings contribute to expanding the comprehension of accessibility as a dynamic and relational phenomenon within healthcare environments.

Abstract

This research investigates the Wheeler Model as a conceptual framework for integrating traditional ornamental elements into the art education curriculum, which is grounded in local wisdom. The study seeks to elucidate the relevance and practical application of the Wheeler Model within the context of 21st-century art learning, which prioritizes creativity, reflective thinking, and cultural awareness. A qualitative approach is employed through a library research method, involving the review and analysis of a diverse range of national and international scholarly sources pertaining to art curriculum development, culture-based education, and the preservation of traditional ornamental heritage. The findings of the study reveal that the integration of traditional ornaments within the art curriculum assumes a strategic role in sustaining cultural identity while simultaneously nurturing the creativity and cultural literacy of students. The cyclical, reflective, and adaptive Wheeler model emerges as an appropriate curriculum model due to its emphasis on the integration between learning objectives, learning experiences, material content, learning methods, and continuous reflective evaluation. Through the application of this model, art learning transcends technical proficiency, fostering cultural awareness, appreciation of aesthetic values, and critical and creative thinking abilities. The results of reflection demonstrate that the Wheeler Model effectively bridges two primary dimensions in 21st-century arts education: the preservation of local culture and the infusion of modern learning innovation. Consequently, the integration of traditional ornaments through the Wheeler Model can serve as an effective strategy for developing an art curriculum that is contextual, creative, and deeply rooted in the nation’s cultural values.

Abstract

North Sumatra, as a metropolitan province on the island of Sumatra, has a diverse cultural wealth, one of which is Ulos, which is an important identity of the Batak Toba people and needs to be preserved to remain relevant amidst the development of the times. This creative research aims to maintain the cultural value of Ulos through visual exploration in collage painting works. The objectives of the research include: identifying and formulating designs for Ulos-themed works that maintain the authenticity of cultural values; explaining the process and techniques of creating paintings with the concept of Ulos as a form of cultural preservation; and evaluating the final results of the work from an aesthetic aspect. The method used is the I Made Bandem creative method, which includes five stages: preparation, elaboration, synthesis, concept realization, and completion. Through this method, the research produces collage paintings that combine elements of tradition and contemporary visual approaches, thus presenting novelty in the presentation of Ulos motifs as an expression of cultural preservation. The findings show that the collage technique is able to strengthen the texture, pattern, and symbolic character of Ulos in the painting medium, as well as providing an innovative alternative for efforts to strengthen Batak cultural identity through fine art. This research confirms that collage painting can be an effective means of maintaining and developing local cultural heritage.

Abstract

Batik is one of Indonesia's cultural heritages that has a distinctive visual character, complex motif structure, and philosophical values that reflect local wisdom. The integration of batik motifs into contemporary calligraphy paintings offers a new aesthetic approach in exploring Nusantara culture through the medium of modern art. This study aims to: (1) identify and determine relevant batik motifs that maintain cultural values; (2) describe the artistic and technical processes in creating contemporary calligraphy paintings based on batik motifs; and (3) evaluate the final results from the aesthetic and cultural representation aspects. The study uses the I Made Bandem creative method which includes the stages of preparation, elaboration, synthesis, concept realization, and completion. The synthesis stage is an important part in combining the character of calligraphy lines with the structure of batik motifs, thus forming a balanced, harmonious composition with symbolic depth. The results of the study show that batik motifs not only serve as supporting ornaments, but can also function as structural elements that enrich the visual rhythm, space, and meaning in contemporary calligraphy works. The conclusion of the study confirms that the incorporation of batik motifs in contemporary painting can be a means of cultural preservation while expanding the visual vocabulary of modern art. The novelty of the work lies in the visual synthesis strategy that places batik motifs as generative elements in the calligraphy system, providing practical implications for the development of culture-based art in the future.
