Abstract

Banda Aceh, a region prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, necessitates the implementation of clear signs and symbols to facilitate evacuation during emergencies. However, individuals with hearing impairments face challenges in accessing information conveyed solely through spoken or auditory means. This study investigates the efficacy of tsunami evacuation symbols and signs in public areas of Banda Aceh in assisting deaf individuals and compares their performance to international standards. Employing a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, the study administered questionnaires, conducted in-depth interviews, and facilitated group discussions with deaf residents residing in Banda Aceh. These individuals frequently occupy public spaces such as mosques, shopping centers, and bus terminals. The findings reveal that 85.7% of the surveyed population deemed the evacuation symbols beneficial for disaster preparedness. Nevertheless, only 21.4% expressed satisfaction with the clarity of the symbols’ colors and shapes. Several critical issues were identified, including the symbols’ poor visibility due to inadequate color contrast, size, or damage. Additionally, the signs were not strategically positioned, and insufficient supplementary information, such as maps, visual aids, or sign language translations, was provided. Notably, 78.6% of the respondents emphasized the paramount importance of incorporating sign language into evacuation plans. Consequently, the study concludes that while the symbols in Banda Aceh offer some level of assistance, they lack full accessibility for deaf individuals. The research suggests that signs should adhere to international standards like ISO 7010, enhance readability, and incorporate additional visual tools and sign language to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals during emergencies.

Abstract

This study examines the digitalization motifs at the Tuha Indrapuri Mosque as a means of preserving traditional Acehnese visual arts. This mosque stands as a historical landmark that exemplifies the amalgamation of Hindu, Islamic, and local wisdom through its decorative motifs, which possess both aesthetic and religious significance. However, numerous of these motifs have suffered damage and are at risk of being lost due to a lack of comprehensive documentation. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology through literature review, observation, interviews, documentation, and visual digitization utilizing graphics software, resulting in two-dimensional and three-dimensional decorative motif designs. The research findings reveal that the decorative motifs at the Tuha Indrapuri Mosque comprise floral and geometric shapes that embody the aesthetic, symbolic, and spiritual values of the Acehnese people. Digitization serves as a strategic step to document and preserve traditional decorative motifs, ensuring their relevance in contemporary artistic developments. Practically, the outcomes of this digitization can be utilized as design assets for the creative industry, authentic references for future physical building restorations, and digital educational media that facilitate the younger generation’s access and learning about Acehnese cultural heritage visually.

Abstract

This study aims to design and evaluate a technology-based campus transportation service to improve accessibility and information delivery at Telkom University. The research employs a design-based research approach using the Double Diamond model, with data collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and literature review. The design process resulted in a service prototype that was evaluated using the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). The evaluation results show positive scores across all UEQ dimensions, including attractiveness, clarity, efficiency, stimulation, and novelty. These findings indicate that the proposed service provides a good user experience and supports the development of an innovative and sustainable campus transportation system.

Abstract

The interest of students in learning history, particularly the history of Indonesian currency, remains relatively low when the material is delivered through conventional methods. Consequently, this study aims to design an interactive multimedia learning medium titled “Mengenal Rupiah” to support adolescents’ comprehension of the history of the rupiah as a national economic identity. The multimedia design process encompasses pre-production, production, and post-production stages. Data collection techniques employed included observation, interviews, and questionnaires administered to 17 respondents aged 10–17 years in Semarang City, selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach to ascertain the needs and preferences for digital learning media among the target users. The findings of the data analysis reveal that students exhibit greater interest in learning the history of currency through illustrative visualizations, animation, and interactivity compared to textbook-based methods. Based on these findings, the “Mengenal Rupiah” media was developed utilizing Procreate and Adobe Animate with user-friendly interactive navigation. This work applies visual communication design principles with an edutainment concept to create an engaging learning experience. As a prototype, this media still possesses limitations and holds the potential for further development into a more comprehensive and interactive learning medium.

Abstract

Traditional pottery centers in Indonesian face challenges related to declining material quality, limited finishing techniques, and low market competitiveness. The Pundong pottery center in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, reflects this condition, where products are generally limited to low-fired bisque wares with low functional and economic value. This research aims to develop and evaluate GERA-STONE, a hybrid ceramic material combining local earthenware clay with stoneware to improve product quality and market acceptance. The study employed a participatory research and development (R&D) approach integrated with practice-based research, involving 30 artisans. The research was conducted in three stages: material development, finishing exploration, and product evaluation through direct market testing in a public exhibition. Data were collected through observation, experimentation, discussions, and market testing, and analyzed descriptively. The results show that GERA-STONE improves structural stability, firing performance, and glaze compatibility. Finishing techniques enhance both aesthetic and functional qualities, enabling products to serve as tableware and home décor. Market testing indicates positive consumer responses, with products achieving prices 300–500% higher than conventional pottery. These findings confirm that innovation in material and technique, supported by participatory processes and market evaluation, can significantly enhance product quality and economic value.

Abstract

The Sintuk War Museum in Padang Pariaman Regency plays a crucial role in preserving and disseminating the narrative of local historical struggles. However, the utilization of the museum’s interior, particularly its display system, has not been optimized, resulting in limited visual readability, inadequate collection grouping, and a diminished visitor experience. This study seeks to optimize the museum display design to enhance the quality of visual presentation and visitors’ comprehension of historical content. This research employs a design thinking approach comprising five stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with museum management, visual analysis of the exhibition space, and a literature review pertaining to museum display design. The collected data were analyzed using SWOT analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as the foundation for design development. The study generated several alternative display design concepts, which were subsequently evaluated through prototyping and user feedback. The selected display design prioritizes visual clarity, efficient space utilization, collection safety, and the reinforcement of historical narratives through focused lighting and systematic object grouping. The proposed design is anticipated to enhance visitors’ focus, comfort, and comprehension of the exhibited collections. This study provides design recommendations that integrate aesthetic, functional, and educational aspects, rendering them pertinent for the development of display systems in historical museums with comparable characteristics.

Abstract

The recent surge in the number of music festivals in Indonesia has presented both opportunities and challenges for photographers documenting pivotal moments at these events. A diverse array of photographic tools, including cameras, lenses, spare batteries, and other accessories, often pose constraints in mobilizing and organizing equipment amidst crowds. This research endeavors to design a vest that enhances the work efficiency and mobility of photographers within a dynamic music festival environment. Employing a qualitative approach, this study utilizes data collection methods such as observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation within the active photography community. The design process employs the SCAMPER method, encompassing Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to Another Use, Eliminate, and Reverse, to ensure the resulting vest aligns with the photographers’ needs. The findings indicate that vests with specialized compartment designs facilitate the organization of camera equipment, simplify access during work, and safeguard equipment from damage during crowd mobilization. This product is anticipated to serve as a practical solution that enhances the comfort and safety of photographers at music festivals. Furthermore, this research can serve as a reference for the development of analogous products in the future. The redesign was conceived as a critical response to the inadequacy of the previous design in meeting the evolving demands of users.

Abstract

Chinese New Year celebrations hold significant cultural importance in China, embodying traditional values and symbolic meanings. However, the advent of globalization has led to a decline in the understanding of Chinese New Year culture among younger generations. Visual media, particularly webtoons, present a promising avenue for cultural introduction tailored to the characteristics of contemporary youth. This study seeks to design webtoon characters that embody the essence of Chinese New Year and represent young Chinese Indonesians in the context of modern life. The methodology employed in this study involves a structured design process encompassing pre-production, production, and post-production stages. The outcomes of this study are webtoon character designs that effectively convey the identity, lifestyle, and personality of young Chinese Indonesians. It is anticipated that this design serves as an alternative medium for introducing Chinese New Year culture, fostering greater relevance and acceptance among the younger generation.

Abstract

This research aims to design and develop the edutech platform “Grand Huda” as a medium for children’s drawing and coloring, grounded in the positive psychology approach of Martin Seligman’s PERMA model (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment). The study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method with the DDD-E model, which consists of the stages: decide, design, develop, and evaluate. A qualitative approach is used to explore user needs and to design learning programs aligned with the characteristics of elementary school students. The subject of the study was a 3rd grade student who participated in an online drawing and coloring program. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observations, focus group discussions, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis, involving data reduction, presentation, verification, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the “Grand Huda” platform was successfully designed as an art learning ecosystem integrated with PERMA elements. The program was structured progressively through color gradation exercises, thematic drawing activities, and practice-based projects, supported by digital media such as modules, worksheets, video tutorials, and interactive online classes. Evaluation results revealed improvements in students’ drawing and coloring skills, with grades rising from sufficient to advanced categories. Beyond technical progress, students demonstrated increased motivation, confidence, and engagement in learning. Therefore, the “Grand Huda” edutech platform based on the PERMA model offers an innovative alternative for digital art education that is more humanistic, interactive, and supportive of students’ psychological well-being.
