Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at improving students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph by using Movie Posters. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X SMA Negeri I Galang, which consist of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles which cycle I and cycle II consist of 3 meetings. The instruments for collecting data were qualitative (interview, diary notes, and observation sheet) and quantitative data(writing test). Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ score in Test I was 56,38 ; for the Test II was 68,05 , and for the Test III was 85. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested by using Movie Posters. The conclusion is that by using Movie Posters improves the students’ achievement in writing descriptive. Abstract

This study deals with euphemism in political speech of David Cameron about ISIS attacks. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of euphemsim used in David Cameron‟s speech on ISIS attacks and the reason why the most dominant types was choosen. The study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method.The data for this study were David Cameron political speech transcript in 20 July 2015, 14 November 2015, 2 December 2015, 5 february 2016. The source of the data was from United Kingdom goverment website . The data were analyzed using the theory of Allan and Burridge (1991). The findings of the study showed that the types of euphemism used in David Camerons political speech about ISIS attacks were: figurative expression (28,8%) ,circomlocution (15,5%), ommision (13,3%), ommision (13,3%) , hyperbole (11,1%), understatement (8,8%) , flippancy (8,8%), abbreviation (8,8%),  borrowing (2,2%) and clipping (2,2%)  . Figurative expression as the most dominant type used by David Cameron because it make words in speech more organized as a nice thing to be spoken in public in order to convince people.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe types and how of the free morpheme uttered by a two-year-old Indonesian Child. It was a qualitative research design which was observed with a single case study. The instruments used were observation and interview. The researcher observed the subject for two months where conversation in diffrent contexts in daily activities took place. The data collected were the utterances produced by the subject in diffrent context and interview. The data were analyzed by using the theory of language acquisition and free morpheme. The results of this study were: (1) the two types of free morpheme namely lexical and function word were uttered by the subject in his daily activities in diffrent context. (2) the using of  free morpheme occured analysis were:  saying statement,  refusing advise,  saying  dislike, asking gift, refusing comment,  asking question, and the last is avoiding quarrel. The using of  free morpheme based on the speaker’s backgruond analysis was  internded to be used for the interaction in community. Key words: Acquisition, Free Morpheme, Two Year Old Indonesian Child

Abstract

This study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic reflected in the symbols used in Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Old Man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway. The collecting data process is note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follow. First, it is found that there are eight symbols used in this novel. They are classified into Individual symbol and Universal symbol. In the novel the Old Man and the Sea the symbols which the researcher considers as individual symbols. Individual symbols are the old man as a symbol of someone who has optimistic, Manolin as a symbol of hope, Marlin as a symbol Struggle of life, Shark as a symbol of Destruction and problem, joe Di Maggio as a symbol Strong desire, bird as a symbol of help. The second category is Universal symbol. universal symbol are Sea as symbol of universe, Lion as symbol of strength. there are two elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has optimistic life which is reflected in the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of struggle and positive thinking, Second, Those symbols reflect the values of optimistic life which is to be the theme of the novel. Keywords: optimistic, symbol

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research deals with Theme and Rheme in Editorials texts of The Jakarta Post newspaper. The aims are to find out the optional element dominates the structure of theme in the editorials of The Jakarta Post newspaper and to describe where the optional dominant element occurs. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from three different editions of The Jakarta Post editorials which is publish on January 2014. The findings indicate that conjunction was an element dominantly used in textual theme because there were so many compound clauses and there were two or more clauses in coordination relation or dependency on another. In interpersonal theme, adjunct was an element dominantly used that is means that a prepositional phrase has its own internal structure containing complement within it and preposition is put at first position of a clause which is called Theme. Conjunction and adjunct were dominantly used when the editors tells their argumentation, comment and their assessment of the news, because of the using of colloquialism or spoken language in editorials of the Jakarta Post newspaper.     Keyword        : Theme, Rheme, Editorial

Abstract

The study deals with Feminism in Veronica Roth’s Movie “Divergent” from three women character. The objective of the study were to find out the types of feminism and the roles of women in Divergent movie. The research method of this study used qualitative research, relying on the analysis and description of previous researcher and the studies of feminism. The data of this study were the utterances that can be found out from the script of divergent movie. The data of this research were analyzed by using Tong’s theory. The researcher found there are 3 types of feminism in three women character in Divergent movie, they are : 5 statements that are included in liberal feminism, 12 statements are included in radical feminism, and 3 statements are included in anarchist feminism. The role of women that can be found from three women character in Divergent movie was the role of women in domestic sector and the role of women in public sector. Keywords: Divergent Feminism, Movie

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the two types of conversationalimplicature, they are; generalized conversational implicature and particularizedconversational implicature and to describe the reason of the most dominant typeof conversational implicature. This research was conducted by using descriptivequalitative. The data was collected by applying documentary technique such as;collecting reference and journal related to the study, searching and selecting thesource of data, downloading the data from youtube, and transcribing the script ofthe show. The data were taken from six segments of one episode of Mata Najwa’stalk show. The two types of conversational implicature were occurred in theepisode of Mata Najwa’s talk show. The findings of data analysis showed that thetotal numbes of conversational implicature was 84 occurrences. The two typeswere Generalized Conversational Implicature 49 (58.33%) and ParticularizedConversational Implicature 35 (41.67%). The most dominant type ofconversational implicature was Generalized Conversational Implicature. It showsthat the interviews usually used the clear, brief and straightforward statements inorder to avoid the ambiguity and to make the listeners were able to understandwhat he/she said. And also this program is expected to give information,interested and give some positive lessons to the listeners.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigate interpersonal metaphor in Mata Najwa’s talk show texts. Three are reasearch problems are raised, namely 1) What types of grammatical metaphors are used in Mata Najwa’s talk show. 2) How is interpersonal metaphor coded in Mata Najwa’s talk show. 3) In what contexts are the interpersonal metaphors coded as they are in Mata Najwa’s talk show. The analysis based on interpersonal metaphor as developed in Systematic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Specifically, dealt with interpersonal metaphor, in this study consist of two types, namely, metaphor of mood and metaphor of modaly. The total calculations are the metaphor of mood in Sang Penantang is about 94.85% and metaphor of modality is about 5.14%. The metaphor of mood in Sengatan Dahlan is about 95.34%and metaphor of modality is about 4.65%.In the investigating metaphor of mood is the dominant because the message of the sentences in political interaction used the patterns of mood which are seen as carrying the burden for making the different interpretation in the contextual occurences.   Keyword: Interpersonal Metaphor, Talk show.

Abstract

The study deals with the types of cohesive devices in Richard B. Pelzer‟s memoir, A Brother‟s Journey. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of cohesive devices, the dominant type of cohesive devices and to describe the implication of the dominant type of cohesive devices of it. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were 538 sentences taken from 18 chapters and first 2 pages from the each page which were collected by applying documentary technique. The five types of cohesive devices occurred in a text of A Brother‟s Journey, namely reference (62, 29%), substitution (0, 94%), ellipsis (2, 07%), conjunction (34, 32%), and lexical cohesion (0, 36 %). The dominant type of cohesive devices was reference. The implication of using reference dominantly in this text was to help the writers to keep the identity of the participants, ideas and things in the story and keep track them through the story. By using reference, the writer had the ability to avoid unnecessary repetition so that the readers easily get the information about an item that indicates the identity of what is being talked about from the text. From those findings, it is concluded that cohesive devices plays an important roles in written.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on language functions used by the main character in “Sherlock Holmes” movie. The aims were to find the use of language functions and describe the dominant types of language functions used in “Sherlock Holmes” movie. The data were the dialogue of the main character in “Sherlock Holmes” movie in the first forty minutes of the movie. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The findings show that there are six types of language functions used by the main character in “Sherlock Holmes” movie. They are expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, phatic, and poetic. The most dominant type of language function is metalinguistic. It means that the main character conveys code analysis by asking questions to the people so that he might invent clue for the sake of his investigation.   Keyword : Language Functions, Sherlock Holmes, Movie.
