Abstract

This research examines the use of cartoon illustrations in the political campaign of the presidential candidate pair Prabowo - Gibran, focusing on visual analysis using the semiotic theory approach of Charles Sanders Peirce. The use of cartoon illustrations depicting cute and adorable characters contrasts with Prabowo's image as a stern and authoritative former military figure. This study aims to understand how visual cartoon elements are used to shape the candidates' identities and influence voters' perceptions. Through qualitative research methods, data were collected through observation, documentation, and content analysis of campaign media. Peirce's semiotic theory was used to analyze the visual signs and messages contained in the cartoon illustrations. The research findings indicate that cartoon illustrations can effectively create engaging visual narratives and can alter public perceptions of the candidates, although there are challenges in aligning the visual image with the candidates' original character. This research contributes significantly to the understanding of the role of visual communication in political campaigns and its strategic implications.

Abstract

Limited learning resources in the early childhood environment in arts and culture learning have an impact on the meta-emotional quality which includes cognitive, social emotional and language aspects of students, especially on knowledge of Indonesian musical instruments. Based on these problems, this research aims to implement the Kanong application based on applied ethnomusicology as an effort to increase cognitive and social emotional, language competence. This research uses the emotion regulation theory proposed by Oschner and Gross. The research method was preceded by ethnography to determine and find socio-cultural indicators that underlie the problem, then continued with a quasi experiment, namely using a sample of 30 students from groups A and B. The results of the research show that the limited learning resources in the early childhood education environment are caused by several factors, namely the lack of optimal meta-emotions in the form of awareness of emotional evolution in the form of human resource competency responses to technological developments, curriculum design that does not yet reflect emotional regulation, while the experimental results show that the application Kanong based on applied ethnomusicology is a solution in increasing students' awareness and meta-emotional abilities which include cognitive, social emotional

Abstract

Many people in the world travel to beautiful places by road, air or sea. But not all of these journeys are immortalised in a complete diary, which is why Bujangga Manik, a Sundanese rishi, was so special when his travel notes were so complete and written on palm leaves. The aim of the research is to visually reveal one of Bujangga Manik's journeys. The method used is descriptive qualitative method with a visual language approach. The sample of this research is a batik motif created based on the idea of Bujangga Manik's journey. The result of this research are batik motifs that were initiated from Bujangga Manik's journey that highlight local wisdom with red, yellow and black colours. The composition of batik motifs, arranged from the main motif that is made large and considered important, as a symbol of the object of importance. The batik motifs produced can become unique commercial products, able to attract the interest of the wider community and have economic potential, as well as opening up new market opportunities thereby increasing added value for the batik industry. These findings not only enrich batik designs, but also contribute to raising the local cultural and historical values contained in the Bujangga Manik manuscript. This research shows how ancient visual elements can be adapted and integrated into batik artwork, thus becoming a bridge between the past and the present.

Abstract

The film Tjoet Nja Dhien has emerged as a pivotal element in Indonesian cultural and historical research, yet an in-depth examination of its use of semiotic aesthetics within the context of war remains underdeveloped. This research endeavors to address this lacuna by exploring the application of semiotic aesthetics in depicting war strategy accidents within the visual narrative of Tjoet Nja Dhien.Research Questions: First, the question of the catalyst for the war strategy accident is investigated. Second, the significance of the symbolic and aesthetic messages in the film is examined. This research employs a qualitative method to identify the depiction of war strategy accidents in the film and to explore the symbolic meaning and aesthetic messages contained in it through semiotic aesthetic analysis. The research methodology involves literature study and movie observation. The findings reveal that the depiction of the war strategy accident in the film is characterized by the internal and external conflicts experienced by the primary character. This is manifested through the utilization of visual symbols such as fire, ruins, and battlefield landscapes. From an aesthetic perspective, semiotic elements are employed to enhance the narrative, including lighting techniques that symbolize inner struggles, as well as the use of dialog and background sounds that underscore the values of struggle and sacrifice. The symbolic message of the film underscores the duality between physical and spiritual struggle, while also representing Aceh's cultural resilience in the face of colonialism. This research contributes to Indonesian film studies by enriching the understanding of the representation of war in a cultural context and by maintaining and respecting the historical values contained in the film "Tjoet Nja Dhien."

Abstract

Massive boundaries such as walls are no longer synonymous with understanding space because space can be born from various processes or activities that are taking place. Just like the creative process of old manuscripts related to culture and history can create space. Therefore, this qualitative research aims to present an alternative perspective on space formation associated with the experience of the creative process of making Bogor batik motifs based on the Bujangga Manik manuscript. A phenomenological approach with descriptive presentation is applied to research discussions which are strengthened by the space and the creative process theories. This study reveals what form the creative and cultural space in the process of making batik motifs, namely tangible components such as creative stages that guide the transformation of written cultural texts into sketches, and intangible elements, namely the meaning of batik motifs based on Bujangga Manik Manuscript. This research contributes to Indonesian creativity and traditions in cultural products to a wide audience.

Abstract

The emergence of modern thinkers in the realm of Sundanese tradition did not always go smoothly, but began with a gap on both sides, both at the level of understanding and in artistic practice. This article aims to describe the process of the gap between supporters of traditional music and modern thinkers, as well as the dialectical process that occurs when a change is made. The dialectical concept developed by Hegel regarding thesis, antithesis, and synthesis is used to uncover problems. Qualitative methods with a case study approach were used in this research. The material object analyzed is Jaipongan art. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, literature study, and documentation. The results show that there is a gap/contradiction between supporters of tradition and modern Jaipongan thinkers due to the lack of intense communication between the two parties when changes occur. The dialectical process that occurs between the two is carried out in several ways, including: through creativity, compromise, communication/interaction, and publications carried out by agents of change. This research concludes that dialogue/communication/interaction between adherents of tradition and modernity can essentially create a new culture as a dialectical result of the two. The two will be in harmony if each side has openness in understanding existences outside themselves that have different characters.

Abstract

Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet) performances have undergone a transformation from traditional performances straight into a digital show. Shadow puppet masterminds perform hybrid shadow puppet shows, by performing them live in front of the public, and also showing them online via YouTube, Instagram, and Tik Tok channels. The research reveals changes or transformations in wayang kulit performances. The research uses qualitative methods, with a phenomenological approach, using descriptive analysis techniques. The research uses data collection techniques through observation, literature study, and interviews. The results of the research show that shadow puppet performances have experienced changes in their form and performance space. More people watch shadow puppet shows on YouTube than people who see live performances. Shadow puppet shows prioritize entertainment, jokes, and humor as well as the presence of guest stars, rather than stories and messages, and noble values. Shadow puppet performances have experienced encouraging developments from the audience aspect, especially virtual performances. However, there has been a change or distortion of the values attached to the wayang kulit performances.

Abstract

This research discusses Gunongan Aceh, part of the 17th century royal palace complex, a historical relic of the time of Sultan Iskandar Muda. The research focuses on analyzing the aesthetics and meaning in the symmetrical architecture of Gunongan Aceh, which is rich in ornaments and decorative details. Qualitative research methods were used to deeply understand the structure and design of the building. Data collection techniques involved literature study, interviews, observation and documentation. Thematic and phenomenological analysis was applied to uncover the aesthetic aspects and symbolic meanings in the architecture. This research shows that analysis using Monroe Beardsley's aesthetic theory resulted in values and meanings relevant to Gunongan Aceh's architecture; Unity means the strong unity of the design reflects the harmony between the physical elements of the building, intensity means the historical and emotional meaning of this building as a symbol of the Sultan's love for his empress, and complexity means the richness of Aceh's nature and the cultural values contained in it.  Thus, the relationship between Gunongan Aceh's architecture and Monroe Beardsley's aesthetic theory provides a solid foundation for understanding aesthetic value and meaning in the context of traditional Acehnese architecture.
