Abstract

Salvation is hoped by all people. Salvation is the purpose of human being to have a good life not only in the world but also in the afterlife. The question of whether it is historical or eschatological salvation as the most important in life comes up among the different religions and cultures. Culturally, people seek to find  salvation inn the world and hopefully in the hereafter. Ayii and mobu are concepts of salvation of the Ekagii tribe in Papua, Indonesia. These concepts want to give answers to the Ekagii people needing salvation in this world and in the afterlife as well. Mobu is an understanding of how a person survives in this world, but especially with regards of the material as well as the spiritual needs. Ayii is an understanding of how salvation could be experienced after death. The Ekagii people are trying to find the eternal life, ayii, in their life. This article correlates these concepts of salvation with that of Saint Paul especially in his escathology. Paul’s tension between the terms ‘already’ and ‘not yet’ is different, but in some sense similar to the cultural concepts of the Ekagii people. Paul is also providing some answers to the Christians concerning their need of salvation in the world and in the world to come. The author underlines the focus of both concepts on the process of salvation that is experienced historically and dinamically in the world.

Abstract

The Catholic Church provides occasions for funeral rites so as to illuminate the death of the faithful within the paschal mystery of Christ. The Church administers the funeral and offers prayers for its departing members to escort them to the afterlife. Funeral ceremonies are held to comfort the bereaved family, but also to strengthen the faith of the people. Therefore, the funeral ceremony could be seen as a pastoral means to foster the faith of the believers and at the same time to evangelise the gospel. Inculturation could be seen as a process to help the faithful experience God’s saving presence in the liturgy from their respective cultures. In this article, the author views the funeral of the faithful as an entrance for inculturation, bringing Christian liturgy towards the local culture, which in this paper is the Javanese culture, and vice versa. The Javanese culture has its own philosophy in escorting the departing souls through its rituals. This article attempts to integrate what has been a ritual of death in the Javanese culture, i. e. brobosan, which shows a gesture of giving respect to the departed, in the Catholic funeral liturgy, particularly in the last part of the rite.

Abstract

Although Marcel and Binswanger are contemporaries both in terms of historical period and intellectual pursuit, it is curious that they are never discussed together. Hence, this essay will attempt to explore some areas of convergences and divergences between these two intersubjective thinkers who are considered to be indispensable interlocutors in the I-thou discourse. In this article, as another attempt to take the discourse on intersubjectivity a little bit further, Marcel and Binswanger are placed in dialogue with the Filipino concept of loob-kapwa, which the author believes provides a hospitable home, when seen against the background of Nicolescu’s “Included Middle”, for the intersubjective relation that they are proposing. The author asserts that loob-kapwa tandem, without turning a blind eye towards its negative tendencies, is a viable answer to the “problem of crossing-over” that remained to be a philosophical baggage for both Marcel and Binswanger courtesy of their Modern upbringing, because the chasm, at least conceptually, is absent in the Filipino estimation of the loob-kapwa intersubjective bond.

Abstract

Everyone longs for an emancipated life as children of God. Everybody hopes for a life without discrimination, oppression and suppression. People have talents to support their lives. Hagar, a biblical figure, is a model of a woman who owns the talents. Hagar, the slave of Sarah, tried hard to overcome the violence and oppression in her life, and she succeeded. Her personality could be a model for many women trying to defend their rights and dignities, especially in Asia. Hagar sets an example of defending the marginalised. Her struggle becomes an instrument to achieve the equality and the harmony of life for both men and women. Hagar is an inspiration, as she strongly believes in God who saves and frees her. She had the courage to escape from his master’s loyalty and hence she was independent: she did not give up amid the many difficulties she faced as a single parent. The author is convinced that only when men and women work and walk together in one heart and mind to create a more dignified humanity as willed by God, will this kind of struggle succeed.

Abstract

Religion continues to exist despite the various attacks directed to its various elements. The secularisation thesis does not apply to the contemporary world, wherein religion proves itself to be an institution that always finds a place through the endless changes in human civilisation that  has witnessed a growing number of violence in the name of particular religious values. Heidegger’s ideas could serve as tools to unravel this pandemonium. His philosophy makes head or tail of the religion’s features that have gone awry due to the lack of mystical elements. Heidegger proposes a fresh way of understanding religion through his reflection on the significance of dwelling poetically. Drawing inspiration from Hölderlin, he reflects upon the importance of poiesis, that is, an understanding on how human beings should live out religion so that it could always be relevant and enlightening.

Abstract

Among the myriad of human behaviours, few may provoke the wrath of God such as that of ‘sexual asininity’ (pathe atimias). An expression literally meaning ‘lust for impurity’ or ‘shameful desire’, this refers to homosexual acts be they feminine or masculine. In his letter to Rome 1:18-32, Paul asserts the gravity of this sin as evoking the ire of God upon their heads, the reasons being not only this sin confronts the natural will of the Creator, but even more so for its inclination in leading human to idolatry. Paul clarifies that homosexuality is not the issue per se, but all acts in whatever form they be, should they violate God’s will are displeasing to God. Paul’s starting point was not that of homosexuality leading up to idolatry. On the contrary, the text quotes Paul as explaining that idolatry is the result of erroneous relationship between human and God mirrored in aberrant sexuality. Human errs due to the bond between human and God is not firm. The logical consequence of God’s wrath is punishment. In other words, human’s transgression brings the wrath of God. God’s wrath is not part of the judgment, but a logical consequence streaming from the ill-relationship between the Creator and the creation. Punishment befalls the humankind because of the deviation of the creation’s nature.

Abstract

Suffering is not by any means a new phenomenon for human beings. Human and suffering are of one reality in life throughout the world. In the light of religious views, the phenomenon of suffering inexplicitly affirms the position of God as central within human life. Job’s suffering in the Christian Scriptures was narrated to contradict directly the ancient laws of retribution in the Old Testament tradition. The Author of the Book of Job seems to insinuate that suffering is not so much an effect of sin as a mystery of God. God is not the cause of suffering. Job’s misfortune draws the attention of his friends who speak in line with the tradition that it is caused by his own sinfulness and to which God has rightly vindicated. Their discussions on sin and suffering did not reach an agreement, however, to the point that eventually God must conclude the debate. The issue of unresolved suffering could properly be related to the distressed victims of HIV/AIDS. This association is intended to recommend the appropriate disposition and approaches to individuals with HIV/AIDS and those who are considered ‘victims’ of the illness, since they have been infected indirectly.

Abstract

Religion has probably been very influencial since the dawn of civilization. The next imperative question would be how something that has always been in the very discourse of human achievement stays in the centre stage for generations to come. To tackle this question, it is important to see what religion actually is related to its ability to manifest the self. The question can even be extended further by examining how the self – central to epistemological inquiries – be justified by the presence of consciousness. Constructing answers to this colossal undertaking of religious identity invites a thorough understanding of how human beings can be taken as conscious. The subsequent agenda is to determine whether consciousness lies within or – on the other way around – outside; whether it is naturally personal or else impersonal. Having dealt with these risky arguments allows us to slightly probe something in the future concerning the debatable fate of being a religious self. Both Mark C. Taylor’ rejuvenated schemata and Yuval Noah Harari’ reinvented algorhytms have provided an extra breathing space that facilitates broader chances for religion to further play a farther role in an even broader horizon of foreseeable possibilities.
