Abstract

The question of naturalism, as a philosophical theory of reality, has been a perennial problem in philosophy. In the contemporary era, naturalism is backed by the scientific enterprise, giving birth to the worldview of scientific naturalism. In this essay, I explore the problems posed by such a scientific version of naturalism. Edmund Husserl, in his work Ideas I, gives several arguments against scientific naturalism, which can be exploited on their own without reference to the larger context of the work's contributions to the development of transcendental phenomenology. Besides arguing that naturalism is inherently self-defeating, Husserl argues that naturalism as a theory of reality cannot accommodate a viable account of human experience, particularly of our perception of ideas and essences, objects that are labelled as ideological extravagance by naturalism. Furthermore, because Husserl's arguments against naturalism can be exploited on their own, they can be employed in other fields of philosophy in which naturalism poses a problem, such as metaethics.

Abstract

Amid the complexities of contemporary social realities marked by inequality, discrimination, and exclusion, the values of local culture remain vital in shaping the identity and social structures of communities. Within the Nias cultural tradition, the concept of Lakhõmi is esteemed as a symbol of human dignity and honour. However, in practice, this value is often entangled with patriarchal social structures that reinforce male dominance, thereby contributing to gender disparities, particularly in the status and roles of women within Nias society. In contrast, Pope Francis, in his encyclical Fratelli Tutti, offers profound insight into the concept of universal fraternity. This study aims to re-examine the meaning of Lakhõmi by engaging in a dialogical encounter with the values articulated in Fratelli Tutti. Through a literature-based approach, this study explores the potential for reconstructing Lakhõmi in ways that affirm its relevance within an ever-evolving social context. It is hoped that such an endeavour will not only preserve the noble values embedded in the local culture but also contribute to the formation of a more just, equitable, and harmonious society.

Abstract

Amidst an increasingly modern era, Catholic youth face challenges in building a solid and relevant faith-based community. The methods employed in this study include a review of Church documents, especially Christus Vivit and Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment, thematic-qualitative analysis, and correlation. The qualitative analysis in this research was based on the survey data distributed to limited respondents. Based on these observations, the study proposes four models of faith fellowship: the Missionary Friendship Model, the Youthful Spirit Model, the Joyful Faith Dialogue Model, and the Second Home Model. Each model is analyzed in terms of its biblical imagery, Church teaching foundations, theological reflection, implications and contextualization, as well as corrective imagery. This research shows that faith fellowship rooted in Christ, built up through communicative relationships, and firm in both personal and communal witness, can provide a meaningful response to the needs of Catholic youth today. These models are expected to inspire Catholic youth, their mentors, and the local Church to nurture a vibrant, inclusive, and missionary faith community.

Abstract

Abstract

The growing autonomy of artificial intelligence systems challenges traditional legal doctrines that assume a strong connection between human agency and technological action. As AI increasingly operates within vehicles, robots, and decision-support infrastructures, harmful outcomes may arise from processes that no single human deliberately controls or can reasonably foresee. This dispersion of causation exposes responsibility gaps that liability, fault, and product-based frameworks are ill-equipped to resolve. Drawing on values central to legal and moral theory, this paper argues for a carefully circumscribed form of AI legal personhood as an instrumental tool for allocating responsibility in a coherent and ethically defensible manner. Even though instrumental personhood can appear counterintuitive to those who hold that recognition presupposes a degree of dignity that AI cannot possess, the analysis distinguishes intrinsic dignity from relational dignity and shows that our treatment of agent-like systems shapes the norms governing human interactions without attributing intrinsic worth to machines. Informed by Kurki’s modular theory of personhood and Harari’s analysis of algorithmic authority, a limited and function-specific legal status could enable autonomous systems to bear civil liability through mandatory insurance and operate as juridical nodes in tort and contract. This model preserves human oversight while acknowledging the de facto agency of advanced AI, thereby aligning responsibility with the technological locus of action and supporting frameworks for fair victim compensation, accountability, stability, and the reinforcement of societal values in environments increasingly shaped by autonomous systems. It is concluded that such a constrained form of AI personhood offers a principled and practical pathway for integrating autonomous systems into the legal order without eroding human dignity and welfare.

Abstract

Michael Sandel critiques Rawls’s “justice as fairness” and then offers an alternative theory of justice based on Aristotle’s political ethics. Sandel believes Rawls’s theory of justice is built on the foundation of Kant’s deontological ethics, which emphasizes the priority of rights over the good. Therefore, Sandel positions Rawls and Kant as adherents of deontological liberalism, both of whom reject utilitarianism and all teleological ethics. Sandel rejects this priority of rights and asserts that justice cannot be defined abstractly without considering the goals, attachments, identities, and contexts of real-life human beings. Sandel criticizes Rawls’s original position, stating that the veil of ignorance creates a rational subject that is too abstract, metaphysical, “blind to knowledge,” and detached from actual human motivations and goals. Sandel shows that a hypothetical contract in the original position cannot be the basis for moral legitimacy because formal agreements do not guarantee justice. Sandel then develops a theory of community justice based on Aristotle’s political ethics. Sandel (following Aristotle) views politics as a means of forming good citizens and promoting the good life.
