Abstract

The call to ministry is an essential aspect of the life of a servant of Christ, requiring perseverance, faithfulness, and sacrifice. In 2 Timothy 2:1–13, the Apostle Paul exhorts Timothy to carry out ministry through the strength of Christ’s grace, illustrated by the metaphors of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. This study aims to analyze the level of implementation of Paul’s exhortation regarding the call to ministry and to identify the most dominant dimension shaping ministerial practice among servants of Christ at the Kemah Injil Indonesia Hosana Tumbang Kubang Church, Seruyan Hulu, Central Kalimantan. This research employs a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 33 respondents from the church’s governing body. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using validity and reliability tests, normality testing, confidence interval analysis, and linear regression with the assistance of SPSS 25. The findings indicate that the implementation of Paul’s exhortation is at a moderate level. Among the three examined dimensions, working hard like a farmer (D3) emerges as the most dominant factor influencing the implementation of the call to ministry, with a correlation coefficient of 0.911 and a contribution of 83%. These results emphasize that perseverance and consistent diligence in ministry are fundamental to faithfully and sustainably living out the call to serve.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the Old Testament narratives of divine judgment as a theological response to Marcion’s critique, which dichotomizes the God of the Old Testament portrayed as wrathful and immoral from the God of the New Testament, understood as loving and compassionate. Employing a literature-based study with a narrative-hermeneutical approach, this research traces the coherence of God’s character throughout the entirety of Scripture while also reviewing the historical development of Marcion’s criticism and the hermeneutical weaknesses present in previous studies. The analysis demonstrates that Marcion’s perspective is rooted in selective, dualistic, and anti-Judaic interpretations that neglect the theological, literary, and historical contexts of Old Testament judgment narratives. Instead, divine judgment in both testaments reveals a continuity of God’s holy, just, and loving character, as evidenced in events such as the judgment on Uzzah, the conquest of Canaan, and the account of Ananias and Sapphira. This study further shows that contemporary pastoral confusion is often influenced by Marcionistic patterns of thought, indicating the need for an integrative, contextual, and intertextual hermeneutical framework for understanding judgment in light of God’s love and holiness. Thus, this article strengthens the theological relationship between the Old and New Testaments and offers pastoral recommendations for Indonesian churches in teaching judgment narratives responsibly and holistically.

Abstract

The statement that the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul and that an “evil spirit from the LORD” subsequently tormented him in 1 Samuel 16:14 raises questions concerning the relationship between divine sovereignty, human disobedience, Saul’s psychological condition, and the transition of Israel’s leadership. This study aims to analyze the presence and absence of the Spirit of the LORD in Saul as an interconnected theological, psychological, and historical phenomenon. It employs a qualitative method combining library research and hermeneutical analysis. Data were drawn from the Hebrew text of 1 Samuel 16:14, selected Bible translations, commentaries, theological books, and journal articles on Old Testament pneumatology. The data were examined inductively through lexical analysis, narrative-contextual reading, thematic classification, and theological synthesis. The findings indicate that the presence of ruakh YHWH upon Saul functioned as divine empowerment and authorization for kingship, whereas the Spirit’s departure signified the withdrawal of his royal legitimacy because of persistent disobedience. The expression ruakh ra‘ah me’et YHWH emphasizes that Saul’s affliction did not operate beyond God’s sovereignty but occurred within the framework of divine judgment. Psychologically, Saul’s condition developed through fear, jealousy, emotional instability, and aggression, although the text provides insufficient grounds for a definitive clinical diagnosis. Historically, the event marked the transfer of royal legitimacy from Saul to David. Thus, 1 Samuel 16:14 integrates divine judgment, Saul’s inner collapse, and Israel’s monarchical transition within a unified theological narrative.
