Abstract

This study aims to identify cognitive strategies used by students when writing procedural texts and analyze the obstacles that students often experience during the writing process. This study used descriptive qualitative research method and was conducted at SMPN 13 Mataram involving 3 informants who were selected using purposive sampling technique. The instruments of this research were interviews, notes, and voice recorders. Researchers collected data using semi-structured interview techniques and the raw data was analyzed using four procedures, namely data collection, data compaction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The result of this research, it was found that the problems experienced by students were grammatical constraints, lack of vocabulary, and cognitive problems. This research also shows that students use elaboration strategies to overcome obstacles in the areas of grammar, vocabulary, and spelling, organization strategies are used by students for language problems or word selection and finally rehearsal strategies by memorizing or remembering vocabulary are used when they have difficulty in choosing or using vocabulary when writing procedure text. In conclusion, in writing the constraints experienced by students are grammatical constraints, lack of vocabulary, and cognitive problems. Students use 3 types of cognitive strategies in overcoming these obstacles, namely rehearsal, organization and elaboration by using these strategies students can complete their task of writing procedure text.

Abstract

Teaching challenges involve situations and opportunities that require teacher to make special efforts to obtain something. Teaching English will be difficult to learn without preparation before carrying out activities because a lack of knowledge will cause problems in the teaching and learning process. In teaching a foreign language, it is important to ensure that we understand the best approaches, methods and strategies to use so that learning English becomes easy and interesting. This research aims to identify students' metacognitive strategies used in completing reading assignments. The subject of the research participant of this research was the eleventh semester students and one teacher of Pasraman Vidya Sthana Suranadi was chosen as the sample of the study. The participant of this research was the sixth semester students of English Language Education Department who worked in teaching practicum. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research design and uses in-depth semi-structured interviews as a research method to collect data. This research found that teachers found challenges in teaching English before using the Student Led-learning method, and after using the Student Led-learning method, teachers felt that they faced fewer challenges. Overall, the findings of this study indicate that the use of Student Led learning in English language teaching can overcome the teaching challenges faced by English teachers, and it is important for teachers and counselors to introduce and train students in using this method.

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the researcher's observations.The aim of this research is to describe and find out how think pair share is implemented to increase student learning activities in students' writing skills, increase student activity, student responses, student learning outcomes and describe the obstacles that occur during the learning process using Think Pair Share. Pair Share (TPS) Learning. TPS is designed to increase students' sense of responsibility towards the lesson itself and others. The type of research carried out in this research is a pre-experimental design using a "one-group pretest-posttest design", The sample in this research was all class XI students a sample of 30 students. The research instruments used to collect data include: student activity observation sheets, pre-test and post-test sheets provided, and questionnaires. The data analysis method used in discussing the results of this research is a quantitative descriptive method. Based on the research results, a large percentage of class completion was obtained from the pre-test result 16% and increased to 83% from the post-test results. The increase in pre-test to post-test learning outcomes was caused by the implementation of the Think Pair Share type cooperative learning model in cause and effect subjects which was carried out well and ran smoothly. Student activity from observations showed a percentage of 20% at meeting 1 and increased to 51% at meeting 2. The increase in student activity occurred because in teaching and learning activities students were required to be active in work groups and be responsible. the lesson itself and so on. The Think Pair Share type cooperative learning model received a very good response from students, this was shown by a percentage of 75%. Thus, it can be concluded that the Think Pair Share type cooperative learning model can improve student learning outcomes in cause and effect subjects.

Abstract

This research aimed to discover the translation strategies used to find out the types of idioms in the novel The Adventure of the Speckled Band Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This research was based on two theories, Baker's theory to discover the translation strategies used as follows; Using an idiom of dissimilar meaning and form, using dissimilar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. Also, use McCharty and O’Dell’s theory to find out the types of idioms: Similies, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliches and fixed statements, and other languages. The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method and the research design was library research. For collecting the data, there are five steps, they are; close reading, identification, note-taking, classification, and coding to get valid data. As a result of the research, it was found that there are fifty-eight idioms data found in The Adventure of The Speckled Band Sherlock Holmes By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Meanwhile, the most preferred strategies used by the translator in translating the idioms in the novel The Adventure of Speckled Band Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is strategies translating by omission and the most idioms used in the novel The Adventure of The Speckled Band Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is cliche and fixed statements.

Abstract

The researcher interested to analyze the effect of teaching technique which is made by Abdurahman Assudais in the form of videos towards students’ motivation in learning English especially for speaking skill. The researcher designs used in this research was experimental design quasi experimental. In quasi experiments, the researceher used control and experimental group but did not randomly assign participant to groups. They intact groups available to the researcher. In this research used the form non-equivalent (pre-questionnaire test and post-questionnaire test) control group design in which this form was popular approach to quasi experiments, the experimental group A and the control group B were selected without random assignment. In technique of data analysis, the researcher applyed the statistical analysis and inferential statistics. The data of students’ score has been taken from the beginning test till the end of the test. The first question was given to the experimental class which received treatment using a videos by Abdurahman Assudais. The researcher used a questionnaire. The number of samples is 10 students. The results of the questionnaire presented showed that students who received treatment had an increase in motivation scores, this indicated that there were no students who had low motivation. Furthermore, the total average score of the experimental class is 805. According to the Five Point Likert scale, the average score indicates that students have a high level of motivation. Researchers used questionnaire. The number of samples is 10 students. The results of the questionnaire presented showed that students who were not treated experienced an increase in motivation scores, this indicated that there were no students who had low motivation. Furthermore, the total average score of the experimental class was 852. Based on the Five Point Likert scale, the average score indicated that students had a high level of motivation. Therefore, members of the Global English Community at Undikma Mataram, especially in the control class, have high motivation in learning speaking skills even without the videos treatment by Abdurahman Assudais.Based on research findings and data analysis in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that gec members, in this case the experimental class, have a high level of motivation in learning speaking skills. The data shows that 10 experimental class students who have low motivation in learning speaking skills have improved after being given treatment using videos from Abdurahman Assudais. Data calculations also show that the control class''s motivation also increases without any learning video treatment. The results illustrate that the total motivation score of the control class was higher than the experimental class where the score difference between the two was 117. Therefore, the learning motivation of the two classes increased and the video from Abdurahman Assudais had an effect on increasing the motivation to learning speaking skills of Global English Community members.

Abstract

The observation at SMAN 1 SIKUR shows that students' reading ability is still low so that appropriate intervention is needed in the learning process. Low reading ability can adversely affect students' comprehension of narrative text, hinder the development of knowledge, and reduce students' ability to express ideas both in writing and orally. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of reciprocal technique on students' narrative text reading ability. This research is focused on the XI grade students of SMAN 1 SIKUR in the academic year 2023/2024. The research method that will be conducted in this research is quasi experiment with experimental research type. The research design in this research is Pretest Posttest Control Group Design. In this design, there will be two sample classes, one sample for the experimental group, which is the subject group in the form of applying the reciprocal technique in learning to read narrative text, while the control group is treated with conventional learning techniques. Samples are taken as part of the overall research object and are considered to represent the true picture of the population. The sample of the research is 62 students, (31 students of experimental class and 31 students of control class). The average score of the experimental class was 2.158. While the average value of the control class was 2.230. In accordance with the analysis above, the researcher found that Reciprocal Teaching Technique has a significant effect on the ability to read narrative text of students in grade XI of Sman 1 Sikur. This is evidenced by the significant difference in the average post- test scores of the experimental and control groups. This conclusion can be seen from the results of statistical calculations, that the "sig" value is smaller than "0.05".

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low reading ability of students in class 3B Elementary School Negeri of 28 Mataram,West Nusa Tenggara. One solution to solve this problem is to use the synthetic structural analysis (SAS) method. The purpose of this study was to describe the improvement of students' initial reading skills using the synthetic structural analytical method (SAS) in third grade students of SDN 28 Mataram. This research method is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings and four stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, reflection. The subjects of this study were 3B students of SDN 28 Mataram, totaling 20 students. The collection technique is in the form of observation, test, and documentation. The results of this study can be concluded that the ability to read at the beginning of class 3B SDN 28 Mataram in the first cycle of students who completed 14 students or 70%, and in the second cycle students who completed the whole were 17 students or 85%. Thus, it can be concluded that using the synthetic structural analytical method (SAS) can improve reading ability at the beginning of class 3B at SDN 28 Mataram.
