Abstract

This study explores the ideological dimensions embedded in the political speeches of world leaders through the combined lenses of classical rhetoric and critical discourse analysis (CDA). By examining selected speeches from figures such as Barack Obama, Soekarno, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr., this research identifies how rhetorical strategies particularly ethos, pathos, and logos are employed to construct authority, mobilize public emotion, and rationalize political agendas. The analysis further reveals that language is not a neutral vehicle of communication, but a powerful instrument for shaping social reality, reinforcing dominant ideologies, and legitimizing power relations. Using CDA frameworks by Fairclough and van Dijk, the study uncovers patterns such as binary oppositions, metaphorical framing, and strategic use of pronouns to create in-group and out-group identities. These findings confirm that political speeches function as both reflections of their historical and sociopolitical contexts and as tools of ideological reproduction. The research underscores the need for critical literacy in decoding political language in an era of global media influence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze netizens' language politeness in the comment sections of online news platforms using a pragmatic approach. With the rise of digital media as a public communication space, the freedom of expression in comment sections often features a range of linguistic behavior, from polite to impolite expressions. The research applies Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory as the analytical framework to identify strategies of positive politeness, negative politeness, as well as face-threatening acts and impoliteness. Data were collected from five leading Indonesian online news portals and analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal that while some comments employ politeness strategies, the majority are dominated by impolite language, particularly in news related to politics and social issues. This indicates that the digital sphere has not yet fully evolved into an ethical and constructive communication environment. The study highlights the importance of digital literacy and communication ethics in fostering a healthy culture of discourse in online spaces.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of mass media on public perception of criminal cases through a qualitative lens. Mass media, including television, newspapers, and digital platforms, plays a significant role in shaping public opinion, often framing criminal events in ways that can influence societal judgments, emotional responses, and perceptions of guilt or innocence. Using in-depth interviews and content analysis, the research investigates how media narratives, sensationalism, and selective reporting contribute to the formation of public bias and moral panic. The findings reveal that repetitive exposure to crime-related content can distort reality and amplify fear, while media framing tends to reinforce stereotypes and influence the perceived severity of crimes. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of media effects on public consciousness and emphasizes the need for more balanced and ethical journalism in crime reporting.
Metaphor in Literature: A Study on the Use of Figurative Language in Classical and Modern Works Faizah, Naela Mikyalul

Abstract

Metaphors do not only function as linguistic decorations, but also reflect the author's cultural values, social norms, and worldview in the historical context. Classical works, such as poetry and prose by prominent authors, provide deep insight into the traditions, beliefs, and values of the society of the time. The analysis of metaphors allows us to understand how figurative language reflects the spirit of the times that underlies people's thinking. The growing interest in how language creates meaning in a variety of contexts is driving this research. However, there are shortcomings in the research that show a lack of exploration regarding the comparative use of metaphors between classical and modern works. Modern works are also a major focus, where contemporary writers often explore metaphors in innovative ways, creating new meanings that reflect the challenges and dynamics of today's life. In many modern novels, metaphors are used to raise social and political issues, intertwining with the reader's experience. Despite the differences in context and style between classical and modern works, the function of metaphor as a bridge between reality and imagination remains constant. This research is expected to enrich the understanding of the relationship between language, literature, and human experience. In conclusion, despite variations in context and application, metaphors remain an important tool in shaping human understanding of reality and imagination, and have a significant influence on our interactions with the world around us.

Abstract

The purpose of this activity was to enhance the capacity of human resources at the Molokiyah Arts and Culture Institute through creative batik training. The methods used included an approach and mentoring process that actively involved the partner institution the Molokiyah Arts and Culture Institute in every stage of the program, from planning to evaluation. The results of this community service activity showed a positive impact on the participants. Beginning with the introduction to the history, philosophy, raw materials, and tools used, as well as the basic techniques of hand-drawn batik, participants gained a deeper understanding of the batik-making culture. Training in techniques such as mencanting, coloring (mecolet), wax removal (melorod), and mastery of color-mixing skills contributed to increased creativity, precision, and self-confidence in their artistic creations. This batik-making activity not only preserves cultural heritage but also opens opportunities for economic and creative development in the future

Abstract

The rapid rise of digital technologies and mobile applications has significantly reshaped how people interact with literature, shifting reading from static print to interactive, multimodal experiences. This study investigates how interactive literature in apps and digital platforms alters reading patterns, comprehension, participation, and aesthetic experience. Using a systematic literature review (SLR), articles published between 2019 and 2025 were collected from major databases, screened through a PRISMA protocol, and synthesized using thematic analysis. A total of 48 eligible studies were reviewed to capture global perspectives on interactive reading practices. The findings reveal three main themes. First, interactive navigation through branching narratives, hyperlinks, and multimedia shifts reading from linear to non-linear, promoting agency but sometimes overwhelming readers. Second, interactivity enhances engagement, motivation, and vocabulary recall while enriching aesthetic immersion; however, its effects on deep comprehension remain inconsistent. Third, demographic and digital literacy factors moderate outcomes, with younger and digitally experienced readers navigating interactivity more effectively, while cultural and socioeconomic contexts shape participation styles. The study concludes that interactive literature expands rather than replaces traditional reading, offering opportunities for participatory and creative engagement while raising challenges for sustaining critical comprehension. These insights provide a foundation for future educational applications and design of digital reading platforms.
