Abstract

The study of seventh grade students' essays at Undiksha Singaraja Laboratory School is important to understand the use of sentence types, sentence unity, and sentence structure. This study aims to describe (1) sentence types, (2) sentence unity, and (3) sentence structure in students' essays. The data collection method used document recording and was analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that students used 107 single sentences and 99 compound sentences, reflecting a balance between the two. Sentence unity is shown by 186 sentences that have clear subject-predicate relationships, while there are 11 sentences without subjects and predicates, 8 sentences only contain predicates, and 1 sentence only has a subject. The varied sentence structures show the students' ability to construct sentences well. This research not only improves the understanding of students' writing ability, but also contributes to the field of syntax with insights into sentence formation and coherence among junior high school students

Abstract

Prokem language is a unique form of communication often favored by teenagers today, though it originated among thugs as a means of secrecy. Over time, this language has transitioned into common usage among youth, including students in school settings. Teachers often express concern over its impact on student politeness. This research focuses on three key issues: 1) the forms of prokem language, 2) its formation process, and 3) its use among students at SMPN Satap 7 Banawa Selatan. The study aims to describe these aspects using sociolinguistic theory and a descriptive qualitative methodology. Data collection involved the referential method, with analysis carried out using distributional and equivalent methods. The findings reveal that prokem language appears in single and complex word forms. Its formation includes creating ew meanings for old words, inventing entirely new words, affixation, reduplication, abbreviations, and acronyms. Students use prokem language for various purposes, such as fostering familiarity, maintaining secrecy, expressing emotions like fear, anger, or pride, and even offering advice or ridicule. Despite these findings, further research is necessary to explore the relationship between prokem language, students' politeness, and their ability to speak with proper manners. This could provide deeper insights into its broader social and linguistic implications.

Abstract

This study explores the connotation and denotation meanings in adolescent conversations in Bamboo Village, Una-Una District, emphasizing the importance of understanding words to prevent miscommunication. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and a semantic approach, the research uses primary data collected directly through observation, listening, recording, and documentation. Data analysis involves reduction, presentation, and verification of oral conversations recorded in two settings: Bamboo Village's port and a residential yard. The findings reveal that teenagers frequently use connotative terms such as "shoot" (expressing love), "stone head" (stubborn), and "eat heart" (disappointment). Denotative meanings appear in phrases like "a lot of fleas," "like to eat mangoes," and "fight." The study highlights the importance of distinguishing between literal and figurative meanings, enabling adolescents to communicate more effectively, express themselves accurately, and avoid misunderstandings. The research contributes to semantic studies by underscoring the role of connotative and denotative awareness in social interactions, helping adolescents select appropriate words, foster better relationships, and articulate their identities and values. The study encourages further exploration of connotations and denotations in diverse social contexts, aiming to deepen insights into language use in varying situations

Abstract

This research seeks to uncover the essence of humanist values embedded in two notable Indonesian literary works, Siti Nurbaya by Marah Rusli and Perahu Kertas by Dee Lestari, employing a hermeneutic framework. The investigation centers on four fundamental aspects of humanism: the pursuit of justice and resistance to oppression, expressions of love intertwined with sacrifice, the journey toward self-discovery and individual autonomy, and the bonds of solidarity and friendship. The hermeneutic method was selected for its capacity to provide profound interpretative insights, enabling a nuanced understanding of the texts while integrating their broader social and cultural underpinnings. The study reveals that Siti Nurbaya emphasizes themes of defiance against social inequities and patriarchal dominance, encapsulating the socio-political realities of the colonial period. Love and sacrifice in this novel are intricately woven into the fabric of profound social struggles. Conversely, Perahu Kertas offers a contemporary lens on the quest for self-identity and personal liberty, underscored by themes of solidarity and friendship that reflect the evolving dynamics of modern social interactions. Together, these works illustrate the shifting manifestation of humanist values in response to Indonesia's changing socio-cultural and historical landscapes. This research underscores the role of literature as a powerful vehicle for introspection and social commentary, capturing the complexities of human experiences. The insights gained from this study open avenues for deeper investigations into other literary works, offering opportunities to further expand the discourse on humanist values within the rich tapestry of Indonesian literary traditions.

Abstract

This study analyzes the utterance "goblok" (stupid) expressed by a preacher to an iced tea seller in Magelang, using Searle's pragmatic theory (1969) and the forensic linguistics framework by Coulthard & Johnson (2010). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study found that the utterance contained expressive elements of "hatred" and declarative elements of "ostracism," potentially leading to social unrest. Grammatically, the phrase "Yok ono didol goblok" (go sell it, stupid) is contradictory, lacking literal meaning and leaning more toward emotional expression or insult. From a legal perspective, the utterance meets the criteria of a criminal act of defamation as stipulated in Article 315 of the Indonesian Penal Code (KUHP). The effects of this speech include public condemnation, sympathy for the victim, and social aid provided to the iced tea seller. This research underscores the importance of language control in public discourse to prevent public disorder and negative consequences

Abstract

This study examines the strategy of local language retention based on local wisdom with an interdisciplinary approach, namely anthropology and Linguistics. The phenomenon of language shift that occurs in various regions in Indonesia is a serious threat to the continuity of regional languages as cultural identities. Globalization, urbanization, and the development of Information Technology also accelerate the process of language assimilation, thereby reducing the use of local languages, especially among the younger generation. Through a qualitative ethnographic approach, this study describes in depth how the practice of language inheritance takes place in the family, community, education, and media environment. Data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, parents, children, and schools, as well as documentation of language interactions in everyday life. The results showed that the sustainability of the local language is strongly influenced by the active role of the family, community support, integration in the school curriculum, as well as the use of digital media for documentation and dissemination of language. This study emphasizes the importance of cross-generational engagement in preserving local languages, as well as the need for cultural policies that support the revitalization of regional languages through a culture-based and participatory approach. Thus, the preservation of the local language is not only a linguistic effort, but also as part of the preservation of the nation's cultural identity.

Abstract

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that can affect a child's motor and cognitive development, including language acquisition. From a psycholinguistic perspective, language acquisition in children with CP is a challenge in itself due to limitations in motor, sensory, and cognitive aspects that impact the ability to speak, understand, and produce language. This article discusses how neurological and environmental factors play a role in the language acquisition of children with CP as well as intervention strategies that can support their language development. With a psycholinguistic approach, this study examines various factors that influence language acquisition in children with CP, including the involvement of certain brain areas, communication adaptation, and the use of assistive technology. The results of the discussion show that a multidisciplinary approach involving speech therapy, early language stimulation, and social support can help children with CP develop their language skills.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the use of Sundanese language registers in the realm of football on the @Persib Instagram account. This study aims to determine the types and meanings of registers in the Persib Instagram account comments. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research methods with Sociolinguistic studies. The techniques used are observe and note.  Based on the results of the analysis that has been done, 12 registers of Sundanese language in the realm of football were found on the Persib Instagram account. The research shows that the registers that appear are at the level of words and phrases, and can be classified into two types: open registers and closed registers. The results show that some registers such as jaga aci, mapay gawir, nyerepet jaer, megat paray, cegat muntah, and moe anduk have limited meanings derived from vocabulary that refers to nature, food, and daily life of Sundanese people. Some of them are formed through Sundanese morphemic processes such as affixation (nyetadion) and dwipurwa reduplication (pipinaltian). While open registers are registers whose meaning is relatively broad, but when used in the realm of football experience specification of meaning through changes in referents. Examples such as nyintir, cokel, eupan, and pancong, which in the context of the match experience meaning specifications without changing the basic form.

Abstract

This study explores the intersection between language, identity construction, and humor in the context of stand-up comedy using a critical discourse analysis approach. Stand-up comedy, as a popular cultural genre, is not merely a medium of entertainment but also a site where social meanings are created, contested, and negotiated. The research focuses on how comedians utilize linguistic strategies such as code-switching, the use of slang, metaphor, and local idioms to represent and perform multiple social identities, including those related to ethnicity, gender, and class. Through analyzing selected performances by Indonesian comedians, the study reveals that humor functions as a powerful discursive tool that reflects social realities, challenges dominant ideologies, and facilitates symbolic resistance. Furthermore, audience reactions such as laughter, silence, or applause are shown to co-construct the meaning of humor and identity on stage. The study concludes that stand-up comedy serves as a critical platform for negotiating cultural norms and identities within contemporary public discourse, contributing significantly to linguistic and cultural studies.
