Abstract

Depressive disorder is a disorder which frequently found in adolescence. Although some interventions had already known, many adolescence had difficulty to access care when needed, and adherence to therapy. We aimed to introduce using technology-based interventions for depression in adolescence. We searched PubMed, Springer, Sage, and Science Direct for articles in English using the search terms “adolescent depression” and “depression”, combined with additional search terms, “technology-based” “online” “computer-based” “computerized” “prevention” “treatment” “CBT” “videoconference”. We focused on papers from past 5 years, but also included papers published in the past 10 years (if sparse). We found 25 articles were suitable for this topic. This review resulted some novel development intervention such as Self-Monitoring and mood assessment, Computerized Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and videoconference therapy that had benefit could increase the coverage of the patient, adhered more to the therapy, more convenient to access from wherever they live, and cost the least for the patient than conventional therapy that showed the same effectiveness. Technological development in medical care, specifically in mental health, was a possible solution to increase the coverage of intervention for depression in adolescence. Further research is needed on the effectiveness of this technology-based intervention in larger population.

Abstract

Background: Arrhythmia in tuberculosis is a rare and life-threatening condition. It can occur as an adverse effect of drugs included in the regiment. Case presentation: This study reported a case of arrhythmia in a 58-year-old male who experienced sudden onset of palpitations, several days after his tuberculosis regiment was changed from the fixed drug combination to a non-hepatotoxic regiment. Based on the clinical presentation, electrocardiogram, laboratory finding, echocardiogram, and analysis of the adverse effects of all given drugs, a drug was suspected as the cause of his arrhythmia. The patient survived after undergoing acute phase management for arrhythmia and discontinuation of the culprit drug. Discussion: One of the serious adverse effects of fluoroquinolone is prolonged QT intervals that could lead to deadly arrhythmia. Therefore, close monitoring of the clinical, vital, and physical is crucial, especially during the first month of therapy. Conclusion: Conscientious consideration should be made before starting therapy for tuberculosis, and acute phase management is pivotal in termination of arrhythmia.

Abstract

Introduction: The application of 3D printing technology in healthcare has revolutionized various medical practices, allowing for personalized solutions tailored to individual patient needs. This study explores the current state of 3D printing in medical applications, highlighting its benefits and challenges. Method: A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted, focusing on the utilization of 3D printing for creating anatomical models, prosthetics, and bioprinting of living tissues. The analysis included a survey of various additive manufacturing techniques, such as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Stereolithography (SLA), to assess their effectiveness in medical contexts. Results: The findings indicate that 3D printing enhances surgical planning by providing accurate anatomical models, thereby improving surgical outcomes. Additionally, the technology facilitates the production of custom implants and prosthetics, leading to better integration with patients' anatomy. Bioprinting has shown promise in developing artificial organs and regenerative therapies, significantly impacting transplant medicine. Discussion: While 3D printing offers substantial advantages, challenges such as regulatory hurdles, ethical considerations, and the need for standardized practices remain. The technology's potential in personalized medicine is vast, suggesting a future where individualized treatments are commonplace. Continued research and collaboration among medical professionals, technologists, and regulatory bodies are essential to address these challenges and optimize the benefits of 3D printing in healthcare. This study underscores the transformative impact of 3D printing in medicine and its potential to enhance patient care and outcomes across various applications.

Abstract

Treatment that combines local wisdom and modern knowledge is increasingly developing. This treatment is known as alternative medicine, which differs from conventional medicine because it is intended for therapy or diagnosis and has a close relationship with cultural practices such as community spirituality. This review aims to comprehensively understand alternative medicine, including its background, reasons for its use and debates about its effectiveness and safety. In addition, this review aims to improve readers' understanding of alternative medicine so that they can make better decisions in choosing the right treatment. This review compares two types of alternative medicine, diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. Diagnostic alternative medicine focuses on identifying imbalances in the body that are believed to cause disease. In contrast, therapeutic alternative medicine is based on traditional beliefs, is empirical, or has been used for centuries. The debate about the credibility of these two alternative medicine methods is ongoing, and strong scientific evidence is needed to support their effectiveness and safety. In addition, it is important to discuss the regulation and standardization of practice for practitioners of these alternative medicines. This review emphasizes the importance of consulting a specialist before starting any alternative treatment to ensure its safety and suitability for the patient's health condition. This review helps to increase readers' understanding of alternative medicine, so they can make better decisions in choosing the right treatment.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by persistently elevated blood sugar levels due to impaired insulin action or production. It is a global health concern, contributing to various complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular diseases. While antidiabetic medications have improved treatment options, challenges such as adverse effects, resistance, and high costs have fueled the interest in exploring natural alternatives, including Curcuma longa, commonly known as turmeric. This review aims to evaluate the potential of Curcuma longa as an antidiabetic agent by synthesizing data from existing literature. A systematic search of databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was conducted, focusing on studies from 2000 to 2024 that examined the pharmacological effects, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications of Curcuma longa in diabetes. The review highlights that curcumin, the active compound in Curcuma longa, significantly reduces blood glucose levels, improves insulin sensitivity, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin acts through multiple mechanisms, including the modulation of glucose transporters, activation of AMPK, reduction of oxidative stress, and inhibition of inflammatory cytokines. Preclinical and clinical studies demonstrate that curcumin can improve glycemic control, reduce insulin resistance, and prevent diabetes-related complications. Despite promising results, further clinical trials are needed to confirm its therapeutic potential. This review underscores the potential of Curcuma longa as a natural adjunct or alternative to conventional antidiabetic therapies.

Abstract

Vitamin C is a substance needed by the human body to maintain metabolic function. Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. This disease is often forgotten in the era of modern medicine. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plays a role in the formation of type IV collagen. Type IV collagen is an essential component of the walls of blood vessels, skin, and the basement membrane zone that separates the epidermis from the dermis. Three things must be met to diagnose scabies, namely a history of insufficient vitamin C intake, the presence of clinical manifestations typical of scabies, and biochemical indices, namely low levels of vitamin C in the blood (serum, white blood cells, and whole blood) and low urinary excretion levels. In patients with scabies who already have clinical manifestations, immediate vitamin C replacement is needed. A case of a male patient with suspected scabies with various clinical manifestations has been reported who improved with direct vitamin C replacement therapy. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can improve the prognosis in patients with scabies.
