Abstract

Kejadian Henti Jantung Mendadak (HJM) semakin sering terjadi seiring dengan peningkatan prevalensi Penyakit Jantung Koroner (PJK) di Indonesia. Tersedianya penolong (bystander) dapat menaikkan angka keselamatan korban terutama pada kasus yang terjadi di luar rumah sakit. Terbatasnya sumber daya dalam memberikan pelatihan mengakibatkan masih sedikitnya jumlah penolong terlatih di masyarakat. Strategi yang dapat dilakukan yaitu dengan melibatkan siswa sekolah sehingga diharapkan mereka dapat melatih orang tua atau saudara di rumah serta teman sebaya sehingga di waktu yang bersamaan semakin banyak orang teredukasi. Tim Teknologi Kedokteran berkolaborasi dengan Tim Kedokteran ITS menyelenggarakan kegiatan PkM berupa Pelatihan Basic Life Support (BLS) yang diikuti oleh 30 siswa dan guru SMA Negeri 1 Probolinggo pada 6 Oktober 2023. Kegiatan diawali dengan pemberian materi lalu dilanjutkan dengan praktik BLS pada manekin. Peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan secara signifikan didapatkan setelah pelatihan BLS. Semakin banyaknya jumlah penolong terlatih diharapkan dapat meningkatkan keluaran HJM.

Abstract

Work fatigue can cause a decrease in cognitive function, such as decreased thinking ability, concentration, and memory. A tired brain cannot work optimally, interfering with a person's ability to perform tasks that require complex thinking. In general, to evaluate work fatigue in a person, self-assessment activities using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) are the method most often used by researchers or practitioners. However, this method is prone to bias because sometimes people try to hide or exaggerate their tiredness at work. Therefore, we propose to evaluate people's work fatigue based on their EEG data in this study. A total of 25 participants from SAR officers recorded their EEG data in relaxed conditions (pre-SAR operations) and fatigue conditions (post-SAR operations). Recording was performed on the brain's left (fp1 t7) and right (fp2 t8) hemispheres. The EEG data is then processed by filtering, artifact removal using ICA method, signal decomposition into several frequency bands, and Hjorth feature extraction (activity, mobility, and complexity). The main advantage of Hjorth parameters compared to other EEG features is its ability to provide rich information about the complexity and mobility of the EEG signal in a relatively simple and fast way. Based on the results of activity feature extraction, feature values will tend to increase during the post-SAR operation conditions compared to the pre-operation SAR conditions. In addition, the results of the classification of pre-and post-operative SAR conditions using Bagged Tree algorithm (10-fold cross validation) show that the highest accuracy can be obtained is 94.8%.

Abstract

Mahasiswa kedokteran tahun pertama menghadapi banyak tantangan dalam menye-suaikan diri dengan lingkungan akademik baru, yang dapat memengaruhi kesehatan mental mereka. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam mengelola stres dan memberikan dukungan psikologis melalui pelatihan manajemen stres dan dukungan psikologis pertama / Psychological First Aid (PFA). 30 mahasiswa kedokteran semester 1 FKK ITS mengikuti pelatihan, yang berlangsung selama dua hari dan total 16 jam. Pelatihan juga dievaluasi melalui pretest dan posttest menggunakan kuesioner. Melalui simulasi kasus, peserta menunjukkan kemampuan yang baik dalam menggunakan strategi PFA dan manajemen stres. Hasil analisis menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam pemahaman dan keterampilan peserta setelah mengikuti pelatihan (p=0.000). Pelatihan mencakup pemaparan teori dan praktik keterampilan PFA, seperti keterampilan mendengarkan yang aktif, keterampilan komunikasi, keterampilan empati, dan keterampilan bertahan hidup. Dua modul program ber-ISBN dan publikasi di media massa. Kesimpulan dari pengabdian masyarakat adalah bahwa terjadi peningkatan pemahaman dan kemampuan mahasiswa kedokteran tahun pertama terhadap Psychological First Aid dan Stress Management yang diharapkan lebih siap menghadapi tantangan akademik.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by persistently elevated blood sugar levels due to impaired insulin action or production. It is a global health concern, contributing to various complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular diseases. While antidiabetic medications have improved treatment options, challenges such as adverse effects, resistance, and high costs have fueled the interest in exploring natural alternatives, including Curcuma longa, commonly known as turmeric. This review aims to evaluate the potential of Curcuma longa as an antidiabetic agent by synthesizing data from existing literature. A systematic search of databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was conducted, focusing on studies from 2000 to 2024 that examined the pharmacological effects, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications of Curcuma longa in diabetes. The review highlights that curcumin, the active compound in Curcuma longa, significantly reduces blood glucose levels, improves insulin sensitivity, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin acts through multiple mechanisms, including the modulation of glucose transporters, activation of AMPK, reduction of oxidative stress, and inhibition of inflammatory cytokines. Preclinical and clinical studies demonstrate that curcumin can improve glycemic control, reduce insulin resistance, and prevent diabetes-related complications. Despite promising results, further clinical trials are needed to confirm its therapeutic potential. This review underscores the potential of Curcuma longa as a natural adjunct or alternative to conventional antidiabetic therapies.

Abstract

This paper presents a case report on the management of post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) after failed subarachnoid block anesthesia through trans-nasal sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB). PDPH, a distressing complication following procedures like lumbar punctures, can persist despite conservative management and usually happen in multiple or single attempts at successful subarachnoid injections. For a long period, the treatment for severe PDPH was an epidural blood patch. SPGB, targeting the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) involved in cranial pain transmission, has emerged as a promising intervention. The case involves a patient experiencing severe PDPH after failed subarachnoid block anesthesia. Although SPGB initially brought relief, a recurrence of headaches followed, highlighting the need for further optimization. The case shows that SPGB could be used as an extra treatment for PDPH that doesn't seem to be working, but more research is needed to find out how well it works in the long term and what the best technique is. The abstract emphasizes the importance of ongoing monitoring and intervention in managing PDPH, offering insights into the challenges and prospects of SPGB in clinical practice.

Abstract

Seizures in pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, often arising from various factors necessitating clear diagnosis for effective therapy. Concurrent occurrence of multiple causative factors can complicate diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. We present a case of a 32-week pregnant woman with poorly managed epilepsy who experienced eclampsia and recurrent seizures. Treatment involved multiple medications and emergency cesarean delivery with meticulous blood pressure control. Close monitoring and therapy adjustment were crucial. Managing seizures in such cases poses a dilemma, necessitating initial focus on airway, breathing, and circulation stabilization. Immediate delivery of a viable fetus and maternal health maintenance are paramount. Anesthetic goals encompass seizure and blood pressure control, hemodynamic stability, and intensive care support for potential complications. While eclampsia is a significant factor, seizures in pregnancy may arise from diverse causes, demanding early diagnosis and tailored treatment for optimal patient outcomes.

Abstract

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of global research trends concerning the antidiabetic potential of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using VOSviewer to map keywords, thematic clusters, and research evolution. The findings highlight a strong focus on antidiabetic effects and the pharmacological activity of bioactive compounds such as alkylamides, flavonoids, and phenolics, which act through mechanisms including inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase, activation of the AMPK pathway, and enhancement of glucose transport. The visualizations also reveal the incorporation of Z. armatum into low-glycemic functional foods. This study underscores the plant’s promising role in natural diabetes therapy and the value of bibliometric approaches in systematically evaluating research landscapes.

Abstract

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) remain a significant global health burden, particularly due to increasing antibiotic resistance. Natural compounds have gained interest as alternative therapies to address this challenge. This study explores the potential of cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp.) and jasmine (Jasminum sp.) as herbal remedies for RTI management. Cinnamon contains bioactive compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and eugenol, which exhibit antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Jasmine, on the other hand, possesses linalool and benzyl acetate, which contribute to its bronchodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. The synergistic interaction between these two botanicals may enhance immune response, reduce airway inflammation, and inhibit respiratory pathogens. This systematic review compiles evidence from in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies to evaluate the efficacy of cinnamon and jasmine in RTI treatment. The findings suggest that both plants hold promise as complementary or alternative therapies, potentially reducing reliance on conventional antibiotics and mitigating antimicrobial resistance. Further clinical trials are recommended to confirm their therapeutic applications.

Abstract

Etlingera elatior, commonly known as torch ginger, is a plant widely used as a cooking spice. Native to Southeast Asia, E. elatior is not only valued for its culinary uses but also for its high nutritional content. It is also used medicinally, including as a treatment for typhoid fever and various other diseases. The bioactivity of this plant has been extensively studied. It has antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, tyrosinase-inhibiting, cytotoxic, and hepatoprotective properties. E. elatior acts as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperuricemia, anti-inflammatory, larvicidal, skin-whitening, anti-aging, and wound-healing agent. These biological activities are attributed to its rich content of phytochemical compounds, including phenols, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, steroids, and terpenoids. Given its wide range of biological activities and chemical compounds, E. elatior warrants further research to contribute to the development of natural medicinal plants in Indonesia.
