Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of social attitudes on women entrepreneurs in Algerian environment. The main obstacle for women entrepreneurs in Algeria is that entrepreneurship was reserved for males, therefore, considered as a male occupation. To be entrepreneurs, women have to face negative reactions and pressures from society: the family, the neighbours, men, and even females. Several people, including females, do not accept to work under the supervision of women. In order to shed light on this problem, a questionnaire was used for the collection of data, and filled in by a sample of 30 randomly chosen women entrepreneurs. Means and percentages of answers were computed. Social attitudes were found to be the source of constraints and cause problems for women entrepreneurs in Algeria. Results from this research can be used by decision-makers in making the right decisions for the benefit of women entrepreneurship in the Middle East and North Africa.

Abstract

The paper aims to explore the relationship between gender roles and development infrastructure projects in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector in rural Uganda. It focuses on the influence of various factors including education and governance. Insights into developing infrastructure that addresses the needs of communities could emerge from understanding the multiple dimensions of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect the roles that men and women play within the WASH sector. This study adopted a qualitative approach. Fieldwork has been undertaken in a number of rural communities in south Uganda, where group discussions and interviews were conducted with key players in the WASH sector, government representatives, and people from the communities. The collected data provided an understanding of how gender roles are influenced by other factors, as they are dependent on, and formed by, other social structures, and consequently how this relationship influences the infrastructure. The findings highlight the importance of good leadership by both men and women at community level, which leads to improvements in WASH infrastructure provision. Moreover, there seems to be a strong relationship between educating women and improved sanitation and hygiene practices. Finally, cultural attributes seem to have a strong influence on the way men and women view water and sanitation tasks, how they perform them, and how they engage with and value the infrastructure. The paper gives an overview of the findings and suggests future research which can lead to new evidence to support gender-sensitive infrastructure.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to develop an interactive medical communication board that would be adaptable both in terms of language and metaphor. This board would be tested on diverse population to assess its efficacy in clinical diagnosis to help new female immigrants and their children. Therefore, this study intends to develop an assistive visualization tool of medical communication to achieve the objective of friendly communication among foreign spouses, ill children, and medical service. This research project focuses on integrating medical and design professional fields to develop medical information and auxiliary communication tool, as well as to design doctor-patient communication APP prototype concept. Design draft and discussion with users were conducted. The study mainly adopted interviews, observations, and User Experience Innovation Design (UXID) to carry out interviews with 24 Vietnamese and Indonesian new immigrant women. These firsthand practical data were then transcribed and sorted out. By designing an APP prototype, researchers finally achieved the purpose of assisting new immigrant women in seeking health care and expressing their symptoms. This study is a pioneer study in health communication for immigrants and it can also serve as a reference for other follow-up studies.

Abstract

This research aims to develop and assess the effectiveness of a one-time laughter therapy program for college nursing students. It intends to investigated the effectiveness of this program on their stress response, school life adjustment and ego-resilience. It is a quasi-experimental research of nonequivalent control group pre/post test design. 33 people each of an experimental group and a control group participated in this research (n = 66). After operating the one-time laughter therapy on two groups, this study measured their stress response, school life adjustment and ego-resilience during the same period. The results demonstrated that their stress response was p = .040 and their school life adjustment was p = .012, which meant that the one-time laughter therapy exerted a significant influence on them. The findings suggest that one-time laughter therapy can help college nursing students relieve their stress and adjust to their school life well. This program also enhanced the ego-resilience of the students. Based on the results, it is recommended that the laughter therapy program should be introduced and operated consistently in nursing colleges to regulate the stress response and school life adjustment and promote the health of nursing students.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a Section Team Based Learning (STBL) program for women health nursing education for undergraduate nursing students. It also intends to investigate the effects of the STBL on self-directed learning ability, learning attitude and problem solving ability. The participants(n = 69) were 34 people in an experimental group and 35 in a control group. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group pre/post-test design was used. Data were collected from the experimental group and the control group between September and October of 2017. This study was performed after obtaining approval by IRB (Institutional Review Board) and an agreement by the objects. The women's health nursing STBL program was operated by a researcher personally and run for 50 minutes per week over six weeks in total. It measured self-directed learning ability, learning attitude and problem solving ability of the participants before and after the program. As a result, it has shown that the STBL program exerted a significant influence on the problem solving ability for women health nursing learning (p < 000), but not on the self-directed learning ability and the learning attitude. Therefore, college education courses seem to need to be supplemented in order to foster outstanding and problem solving nursing resources. The women's health nursing STBL program will be helpful to improve problem solving ability of nursing students rather than a lecture class. It will also increase self-learning ability of the nursing students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of CEO characteristic towards firms' cash holdings and over-investment of free cash flow. CEO gender is identified as independent variable where cash holdings and over-investment of free cash flow are the dependent variables. Other CEO characteristic such as age, education, tenure, firm size, market-to-book ratio, leverage, cash flow, capex, networking capital, dividend, free cash flow, managerial and state ownership are the control variable. This research used multiple regression on panel data of a sample of 24 companies listed in index LQ45 for the period from 2013 to 2017 with 61 female CEOs and 59 male CEOs in the sample. The research finds a positive significant relationship between female CEOs, cash holdings and over-investment. The results also show that female CEOs are having a higher level of cash holdings and resulted in lower level of over-investment problems. Female CEO also can mitigate the agency problem in the firm. The UET theory is used to support the findings in which CEO characteristic can influence the company,s performance and financial decision. UET literature focuses on executive demographic to explain corporate investment decision while this paper extends the application of the UET in the area of accounting. This research can be useful for companies to provide opportunities to female to reach the executive levels so that the companies can increase the proportion of women in executive levels. It also encourages policy makers to make regulations that address gender issues in organizations.
