Abstract

Borax is a hazardous chemical substance that is prohibited from being used as a food additive due to its adverse effects on human health. However, in practice, borax is still found in several traditional food products. This community service activity aimed to increase the knowledge and skills of the community in Kamal Village, Arjasa District, Jember Regency, in detecting the presence of borax in food products circulating in their environment. The methods used included educational sessions on the health risks of borax and hands-on training on simple borax detection tests applied to selected food samples. Three types of commonly consumed food samples—bleng/puli, white tofu, and meatballs—were tested in this activity. The results showed that the bleng/puli sample tested positive for borax, while the white tofu and meatball samples showed negative results. This activity enhanced community awareness of the risks associated with borax in food and equipped participants with basic skills to independently perform preliminary detection. It is expected that this program will encourage greater vigilance and promote the selection of safe food for consumption.

Abstract

Background: Inadequate breast milk production among postpartum mothers remains a common health issue in both urban and rural areas. One of the main contributing factors is the lack of understanding about proper nutritional intake needed to support the lactation process. The heart of the kepok banana is a local food ingredient that is easy to find and contains lactagogic compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols. These compounds play an important role in stimulating the hormones prolactin and oxytocin, which are essential for enhancing milk production and secretion. objective: This activity aimed to improve postpartum mothers’ knowledge about the benefits of kepok banana heart in promoting smoother breast milk production as part of supporting exclusive breastfeeding. Methods/Activity Stages: This community service activity was carried out at Puskesmas Jelbuk, targeting 16 postpartum mothers who experienced insufficient milk production. The method included pretest and posttest evaluations to assess knowledge before and after the counseling sessions, as well as interactive lectures and discussions. Results: The results showed a significant increase in knowledge, with the average pretest score of 60 rising to 80 in the posttest following the counseling intervention. Conclusion: Counseling on the benefits of kepok banana heart proved effective in enhancing postpartum mothers’ understanding of natural alternatives to improve breast milk production. Such educational initiatives are crucial in supporting the sustained health of both mothers and infants. Suggestion: Education on the benefits of kepok banana heart should be provided regularly to help postpartum mothers better improve their breast milk production.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health problem, particularly in rural areas, influenced by low animal protein nutritional intake and limited knowledge of health cadres as the spearhead of community services. Grati Village, Sumbersuko District, Lumajang Regency, is one area that requires strengthening the role of cadres in stunting prevention efforts. This study aims to determine the effect of providing education through the TUNA (Telur untuk Anak / Eggs for Children) Innovation Program on the use of animal protein on improving the knowledge of health cadres. The method used was a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 30 health cadres selected by total sampling. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire on the use of animal protein and egg processing as stunting prevention interventions, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that before education, most cadres had a sufficient level of knowledge (46.7%), while after education, the majority of cadres were in the good knowledge category (83.3%), indicating the effect of providing TUNA Program education on improving cadre knowledge. Thus, the TUNA Innovation Program is effective as a strategy for empowering cadres in efforts to prevent stunting based on the use of animal protein.

Abstract

Coastal communities in Sumberejo Village, Jember Regency, are highly vulnerable to hydrometeorological and geological disasters, with older adults representing a high-risk group due to physical and psychosocial limitations. Disaster mitigation efforts have predominantly focused on technical aspects, while spiritual dimensions remain underutilized despite their potential to strengthen coping and resilience. This community service program aimed to improve pre-disaster preparedness among older adults through the implementation of a Spiritual Preparedness Program based on Self-Transcendence Theory. The program employed a participatory community-based approach involving socialization, workshops, training, and continuous mentoring conducted in collaboration with Aisyiyah Muhammadiyah Sumberejo. A total of 33 older adults participated in the activity. Evaluation results demonstrated significant improvements in participants’ preparedness indicators, with knowledge scores increasing from 50 to 90, attitudes from 40 to 80, and skills from 30 to 90 following the intervention. The program also produced community outputs, including an elderly database, spiritual needs mapping, a preparedness module, and the establishment of a community-based driving team. The findings indicate that integrating spiritual strengthening with disaster education effectively enhances psychological readiness, adaptive behavior, and community resilience among older adults. The Spiritual Preparedness Program can serve as an innovative community-based model for pre-disaster mitigation targeting vulnerable elderly populations

Abstract

This article reports a community engagement program aimed at empowering local communities in the SDGs Village of Sukorejo, Bangsalsari District, Jember Regency, Indonesia, through the utilization and processing of medicinal plants. Despite Indonesia’s rich biodiversity and significant potential for traditional medicine development, community knowledge regarding proper identification, cultivation, and processing of medicinal plants remains limited. This program was designed to enhance community capacity by improving knowledge and technical skills, while simultaneously exploring the economic potential of locally available medicinal resources. A participatory approach was employed, consisting of comprehensive health education, hands-on training in the preparation of simplisia (dried medicinal raw materials), and continuous mentoring. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in participants’ knowledge and practical competencies. The independent use of medicinal plants contributed to improved household health practices, while the development of value-added herbal products created new income-generating opportunities. Importantly, this program aligns with and directly supports the achievement of Village Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by fostering community-based health resilience and local economic empowerment. This model highlights a scalable and sustainable strategy for integrating traditional knowledge with community development initiatives in rural settings.

Abstract

Self-medication using over-the-counter (OTC) flu and cough medicines remains a widespread practice in the community. However, limited understanding of correct usage, appropriate dosing, and potential adverse effects frequently results in suboptimal and irrational drug use. This community service activity was designed to enhance public awareness regarding the responsible use of OTC flu and cough medicines through a leaflet-based educational intervention. The program was implemented in Ranomeeto Village, employing a structured approach that encompassed preparatory activities, interactive health counseling, leaflet dissemination, and individualized participant consultation. Post-intervention assessment was conducted using a ten-item Likert-scale questionnaire to measure participants' comprehension levels. Findings indicated a mean total score of 4.57 (91.40%), classified within the excellent category. The highest performance was recorded in information clarity and the opportunity for participants to raise questions, whereas relatively lower scores were noted in participants' self-confidence in applying correct medication practices independently. These results suggest that combining leaflet-based education with direct interpersonal communication is an effective strategy for improving community knowledge and fostering rational OTC medicine use, though continued reinforcement is recommended to strengthen participants' practical confidence

Abstract

Disaster communication plays a vital role in minimizing the impact of earthquakes in vulnerable regions such as Bali, Indonesia. This study aims to analyze effective disaster communication strategies implemented by local governments and stakeholders in responding to earthquake emergencies. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through interviews with representatives from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), community leaders, and local residents. The research stages included identification of communication channels, message delivery patterns, and evaluation of public response during disaster events. The findings reveal that the effectiveness of disaster communication depends on multi-stakeholder coordination, the use of early warning systems, and the establishment of trusted information networks at the community level. Furthermore, public awareness and preparedness significantly increase when communication strategies are culturally adaptive and supported by consistent government engagement. The study concludes that an integrated, two-way communication system supported by technological innovation and local wisdom can enhance the effectiveness of earthquake disaster management in Bali.
