Abstract

This study explores the hadith commentary (sharḥ) in Al-Arba‘īn an-Nawawiyyah by Muhammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-‘Usaimin. It focuses on assessing the depth and methodology of al-‘Usaimin’s interpretation of the forty hadiths compiled by Imam al-Nawawī. The objective is to examine how al-‘Usaimin presents his commentary and how his approach contributes to a more nuanced understanding of Islamic teachings within a contemporary framework. This research adopts a qualitative library research design. The primary data source is al-‘Usaimin’s Syarḥ al-Arba‘īn an-Nawawiyyah, while secondary sources include relevant books, academic journals, and other scholarly works. Data were collected through various references, including printed and digital materials. The analysis applies discourse analysis, involving the systematic examination and interpretation of texts from both primary and secondary sources. The findings indicate that al-‘Usaimin’s commentary is marked by a strong integration of Qur’anic verses to reinforce the meanings of the hadiths. His adherence to the structure and order established by al-Nawawi reflects a methodological consistency, while his inclusion of supplementary hadiths enriches the explanatory depth. Overall, al-‘Usaimin’s work demonstrates a thoughtful and systematic effort to contextualize prophetic traditions for modern readers, offering a comprehensive and spiritually grounded interpretation.

Abstract

The tradition of hadith in Indonesia is an important intellectual heritage that reflects the dynamics of local Islamic thought. However, in-depth studies of the methodology of hadith syarah by Nusantara scholars, especially in the early 20th century, are still rare. This study aims to analyze the methods and characteristics of hadith narration in two important works: al-Khil'ah al-Fikriyyah by Muhammad Mahfūẓ al-Turmusī and al-Tabyīn al-Rāwī by Kashful Anwar al-Banjarī. This research uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies, with the sociological theory of Karl Mannheim's knowledge as the framework of analysis, as well as hermeneutic methods in reading texts. Research shows that Mahfūẓ uses the taḥlīlī method with a linguistic approach and academic systematics, including sanad analysis, sentence structure, to the dimensions of logic and balaghah. Meanwhile, Kashful Anwar uses the communicative and populist method of ijmālī, based on the content of moral messages and religious practices, and enriched by fiqh and Sufism. Both of them studied Arba'īn Nawawī, but with different styles and orientations. This difference is due to the audience factor that each faces; Mahfūẓ targets students and scientists, while Kashful targets the general public of Banjar. These findings confirm that the method of hadith syarah in Indonesia is contextual, flexible, and integrated with the social reality of the ummah. This tradition also shows the intellectual independence of Nusantara scholars in developing Islamic scientific treasures in a creative and relevant manner. .

Abstract

The Friday prayer call (adhan) varies across mosques in Indonesia. A unique tradition is found at Sholihin Mosque, located on Jalan Kaliurang Km 9.3, Tambakan, Sinduharjo, Ngaglik, Sleman, where five muezzins simultaneously recite the first adhan. Although this practice has been maintained for years, its normative basis and deeper meaning remain largely unexplored by the local community. This qualitative study employs historical documentation as the primary data collection method, supplemented by interviews and observations, emphasizing interviews involving relevant figures such as the muezzins, mosque administrators (takmir), and congregants. The data are analyzed using a descriptive-interpretative approach, in which the information is organized, interpreted, and concluded using Max Weber’s theory of social action. In addition, relevant hadith texts from the nine canonical collections (Kutub al-Tis’ah) and other supporting Islamic literature are used to enrich the analysis. The findings reveal that the first adhan performed by five muezzins is understood by the community as a cultural and religious identity unique to Sholihin Mosque, valued for its historical background, religious grounding, and distinctiveness. Furthermore, this tradition is viewed by the muezzins as a form of worship believed to bring spiritual reward in the hereafter. These perspectives motivate the community’s commitment to preserving the practice as a meaningful expression of local religious life within the broader context of living hadith.

Abstract

The study of hadith sharia in Indonesia has continued to develop in recent years. However, systematic studies of its development are still very limited. This research examines the development of hadith sharah in Indonesia in the period 2015-2023 with the aim of tracing methodological trends, approaches and objects of study in hadith sharah studies. The method used in this research is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) which was used to analyze 22 scientific literature to trace the development of hadith sharia studies. The research results show that in general, in the 2015-2020 period, the study of hadith sharia was dominated by the study of traditional books and figures which were linguistic and theological-normative in nature. Meanwhile, the 2020-2023 period is starting to show openness to new forms of expression such as digital media and locality. There are four methods used in hadith sharia, namely the taḥlili (analytical), ijmālī (global), muqāran (comparative) method. Meanwhile, the developing approach includes linguistic, socio-historical, contextual and interdisciplinary. This study also shows that there has not been a significant transformation in the study of hadith sharah, but there are indications of a change in direction in the understanding and delivery of hadith sharah.

Abstract

The study of 'adālah al-ṣaḥābah or justice of the Prophet's companions is a central issue in the study of hadith, especially with regard to their credibility as narrators. This article systematically reviews the direction and development of 'adālah al-ṣaḥābah studies in Indonesia during the period 2014-2023 using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. This research aims to track the direction of trends and developments in 'adālah al-ṣaḥābah studies in Indonesia in the 2014-2023 period and look at differences in methodological approaches and trends in 'adālah al-ṣaḥābah studies. The results of a literature search via Google Scholar show that the majority of research is descriptive and repeats the classic understanding pattern that all friends are fair without exception, as held by Ahlusunah Waljamaah. However, several contemporary studies have begun to question the validity of this view and propose criticism and deconstruction of the concept of collective justice. Figures such as Mahmud Abu Rayyah and Muhammad Thahir Albie proposed a re-evaluation of the definition of friends and the application of the principles of al-jarh wa al-ta'dīl at the level of friends. The main findings show a shift from a normative-theological approach to a historical critical approach. This study also highlights the limited biographical studies of individual friends and the lack of in-depth methodological exploration.
