Roberto Bolaño's Literary Cartography: Violence, Memory, and Transnational Spaces in "2666" and "The Savage Detectives" Glayl, Mohanad Ghanim

Abstract

The Savage Detectives and 2666 by Roberto Bolaño build a transnational literary cartography that carefully studies violence, memory, and exile in international as well as Latin American settings. These novels represent such a “wild” literary space that is beyond national borders, inhabited instead by poet-wanderers treading landscapes of exile and  violence. 2666’s vast, fractured narrative strategically represents suffering from a global perspective and elsewhere in its account of the femicide in the imaginary Santa Teresa, Mexico. Its violence, physical and symbolic, is knotted with historical trauma and memory, following Charles Tripp’s idea of violence as a producer of freedom, identity, and  language. Bolaño’s work is colored by Giorgio Agamben’s formulation of destitute power, with his poet-protagonists debunking hegemonic stories and realizing radical ungovernability. From this perspective, Bolaño critiques nationalism, and positions his characters in in between spaces where identity politics, memory and globalization are  questioned. His border-crossing poetics deconstruct text unpolitical borders, and participate in world literature theories on center-periphery relations. Bolaño is portrayed as a latecomer to the literary “Greenwich meridian,” and yet through his essentially marginal and global perspectives, he in turn has deeply recast this axis. Therein lies the  importance of Bolaño’s literary cartography: the manner in which it confronts the normalized barbarism of our time and its rejection of historical oblivion. Residentially dislocated by military campaigns in his home country, M.'s own fragmented (fugal) storytelling of multiple voices and open-ended stories reiterates the ongoing Ness of trauma and the moral responsibility of witnessing. Bolaño’s fictions, in the end, demonstrate literature’s ability to “map” where violence, memory, and transnationality intersect, revealing important information about the global socio-political fabric of today. His work defies not just the conventions of the literary, but the very limitations of literature, and indeed the function of storytelling in a world ruled by globalized injustice.
The Aesthetics of Silence in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” and Harold Pinter’s “The Homecoming”: Communicative Voids as Existential Expression Abbas, Maytham Abdulrazzaq

Abstract

This paper introduces the significance of silence as a potent expressive tool in 20th-century drama, focusing on Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter as key innovators within the Theatre of the Absurd. The primary goal is to conduct a comparative analysis of the aesthetics and function of silence in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Pinter’s The Homecoming. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from theatrical semiotics, the Theatre of the Absurd (notably Martin Esslin), and existentialist philosophy (resonating with Camus and Sartre), the study examines how both playwrights utilize communicative voids. The significance lies in demonstrating the distinct dramaturgies of silence employed: Beckett’s silence articulates metaphysical absurdity, language inadequacy, and existential solitude, confronting a silent universe, while Pinter’s silence operates strategically within social and psychological realms, revealing power dynamics, interpersonal conflict, and ambiguity through tactical pauses and subtext. The results show that Beckett’s silence embodies a metaphysical void, whereas Pinter’s reflects psychological warfare and social critique. Both transform absence into profound existential expression, highlighting different facets of the modern human condition—one cosmic, the other social—thereby enriching the understanding of silence as a versatile dramatic force.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of non-resident fathers on the social-emotional and moral development of children in Oyo town. Five specific purpose, five research questions and Bandura’s theory (1977) Social Learning Theory. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with non-resident  fathers, single mothers, caregivers, and social workers. Content analysis was utilized to identify emergent themes from the collected data. Findings revealed that active involvement of non-resident fathers positively impacts children's emotional stability, self- esteem, and moral reasoning. Conversely, inconsistent or absent paternal engagement is associated with emotional withdrawal and behavioral challenges in children. Cultural norms, economic constraints, and societal expectations were identified as significant barriers to paternal involvement. Despite these challenges, some fathers employed strategies such as regular communication through phone calls and virtual interactions to maintain relationships with their children. The study concluded that non-resident fathers play a crucial role in their children's development. It recommends the implementation of supportive policies, community-based programs, public awareness campaigns, and educational resources to enhance non-resident fathers' capacity to contribute positively to their children's social-emotional and moral development.
