Abstract

Writing is a critical skill that must be acquired by the students to be able to learn the language and for academic success. Since writing is widely recognized as a challenging task for ESL learners during the teaching and learning processes, students tend to face certain concerns that inhibit them from performing well in writing activities, one of which is anxiety. Writing anxiety is a catch-all term for a range of negative feelings toward writing. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the level, type, and cause of writing anxiety of the 95 prospective English language teachers. The study also endeavored in finding out the significant difference in the level, type, and cause of writing anxiety when respondents are clustered according to gender and year level. Data were obtained using two instruments namely: Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) and Cause of Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (CLAWI) developed by Cheng (2002) and Rezaei and Jafari (2014) respectively. In addition, data were statistically analyzed using descriptive analysis. Results revealed that the overall levels of writing anxiety among the respondents exhibit a moderate level of anxiety. Further, Cognitive anxiety is the most dominant type of anxiety encountered by the respondents when prompted to write English compositions. Meanwhile, the major cause of writing anxiety of the respondents is fear of evaluation and negative comments from the teacher. Finally, results also revealed that there is no significant difference in the level, type, and cause of writing anxiety across gender and year levels.

Abstract

Grit has been a renowned construct in the fields of education (Duckworth & Quinn, 2009) and profession (Baum & Locke, 2004). Similarly, personality traits have also been long acknowledged by different researchers as a determiner of one’s likelihood to succeed too. It is depicted as an internal characteristic noted for its relative stability, consistency, and longevity (APA). As they are equal key determiners, it is intriguing to know whether there is a relationship between these two. The current study aims to realize this among pre-service English language teachers as respondents. Big Five Personality Traits Scale and Short-Grit Scale were utilized in gathering the necessary data for such, while a Personal Information Section was provided to identify the demographics of the respondents. Sequentially, it was revealed that there is indeed a statistically significant relationship between the personality traits of the respondents, such as conscientiousness and openness, and their grit levels.

Abstract

The professional identity and image of librarians give a vivid description of library profession. Due to the emergence of information technology, library users who are the major determinants of librarians’ image have diverse perceptions about librarians’ relevance which leads to professional identity crisis. However, existing studies on librarians’ image revealed how librarians’ status and personality traits can influence library users’ perception of librarians’ image. The study aimed to investigate the influence of library service quality on the perceived librarians’ image in selected private universities in South-west, Nigeria. This study adopted descriptive survey research design of the correlational type. Total population of undergraduate students in the six purposively selected universities was 31,342. Sample size of 1,491 was selected from the population. Convenience sampling technique was used to administer questionnaire to undergraduate students met physically utilising the library resources. The findings of the study were that perception of undergraduates about library service quality and satisfaction with services offered by librarians had relationship with librarians’ image. The study concluded that quality of services offered by librarians determine the perception and image that library users have about librarians. Abstract

Due to the restrictions imposed to stop the spread of COVID-19, most schools and universities around the world have shifted from traditional face-to-face classes to an online learning modality. Consequently, online learning and other related concepts became prominent topics to study during the pandemic. Yet, there is a scarcity of research regarding Microsoft Teams as a learning platform. This quantitative study aims to determine the perceptions of 102 students who are taking English subjects or courses on the use of Microsoft Teams as a platform for learning English in terms of interaction and learning environment using a survey questionnaire. It also explored the significant difference in the respondents’ perceptions when the data are grouped according to gender. Results revealed that the perceptions of the respondents in the dimensions of interaction and learning environment are "neutral". Further, it was found that there was no significant difference established on both dimensions when respondents were grouped according to gender.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the influence of the marketing mix (4Cs) on the decision to be an online master’s degree student in Thai people. A purposive sampling of Thai six online master’s degree students from three universities was selected for a qualitative study. The data were analysed employing content analysis and the NVIVO software program. The results show that the 4Cs-marketing mix (communication, cost, convenience, and customer or student centre) is related to the decision to be an online master's degree student at a university in Thailand. Online master’s degree students perceived cost as the highest essential factor, followed by convenience, communication, and customer (student) centre. Educators and program directors should consider marketing mix (4Cs) because these factors influence the decision to be an online master’s degree student in this qualitative research. The implication could help all service sectors find the appropriate marketing mix or customer relationship management (4Cs) for their customers because it influences behavioural intention or decisions among consumers.
