Abstract

Alcohol analysis of forensic evidence requires analytical methods that provide rapid, accurate, and legally defensible results. This study evaluated the integration of Conway Microdiffusion and Gas Chromatography–Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID) as a screening–confirmation approach for determining alcohol content in forensic evidence. An applied analytical study was conducted using confiscated illicit alcoholic beverages and blood specimens examined at the East Java Regional Forensic Laboratory. Initial screening was performed using the Conway Microdiffusion method, followed by quantitative confirmation with GC-FID for samples that tested positive. All samples showed positive results during the screening stage. GC-FID analysis identified 49% ethanol and 1% methanol in the illicit alcoholic beverage, while the blood specimen contained 0.0169% ethanol with no detectable methanol. The combined application of both methods provided a systematic analytical workflow in which Conway Microdiffusion served as a rapid preliminary screening tool and GC-FID provided reliable qualitative and quantitative confirmation. This integrated approach improved laboratory efficiency without compromising analytical reliability and may serve as a practical alternative for alcohol examination in forensic laboratories handling routine evidence.

Abstract

Fruit peel waste is an abundant organic waste that can be utilized as a raw material for eco-enzyme production through fermentation. Eco-enzymes contain various fermentation-derived metabolites with the potential to function as environmentally friendly biological agents for wastewater treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of eco-enzymes produced from pineapple, orange, and papaya peels and to investigate their effects on the physicochemical characteristics of commercial textile dye solutions. Eco-enzymes were synthesized using a fruit peel, brown sugar, and water ratio of 3:1:10 (w/v) and fermented for 30 days. The eco-enzymes were characterized by measuring Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, and Electrical Conductivity (EC) before and after fermentation. Subsequently, 50 mL of each eco-enzyme was added to 100 mL of commercial textile dye solution, and the mixtures were monitored for 72 hours. The results showed that fermentation reduced the pH of all eco-enzymes from 4.00 to 2.67 for pineapple peel, from 6.83 to 3.54 for orange peel, and from 5.29 to 2.82 for papaya peel. Variations in TDS and EC values indicated that the type of fruit peel influenced the physicochemical properties of the resulting eco-enzyme. Application of the eco-enzymes to commercial textile dye solutions reduced TDS values in all treatments. Orange peel eco-enzyme exhibited the highest TDS reduction efficiency, reaching 50.46% after 72 hours, followed by pineapple peel (43.39%) and papaya peel (41.62%). These findings indicate that fruit peel-derived eco-enzymes have promising potential as environmentally friendly biological agents for modifying the physicochemical characteristics of commercial textile dye solutions.

Abstract

The development of transportation activities in Pelaihari District has led to an increase in vehicle volume that has the potential to cause noise, especially in educational areas. Angsau 1 Public Elementary School is a school located near Jalan Parit Baru, making it at risk of being affected by traffic noise. This study aims to analyze the relationship between traffic volume and speed and noise levels, calculate noise levels using the Calculation of Road Traffic Noise (CoRTN) method, compare the results with noise quality standards, and provide recommendations for noise control. The study used a quantitative descriptive method with data collection on Fridays and Saturdays at 08.00–10.00 WITA and 13.00–15.00 WITA at three observation points located 15 m, 25 m, and 35 m from the noise source. Data collected included traffic volume, vehicle speed, and noise levels using a Sound Level Meter (SLM). The results showed that traffic volume ranged from 851–1,105 vehicles/hour with an average speed of 35.75–37.45 km/hour. The noise level from direct measurements ranged from 72.4 to 82.0 dB(A), while the calculated results from the CoRTN method ranged from 53.3 to 62.4 dB(A). Regression analysis showed that increasing traffic volume tended to increase noise levels, while vehicle speed showed an inverse relationship. Most of the measurement results exceeded the school area noise quality standard of 55 dB(A). Noise control is recommended through building insulation, the use of sound-absorbing materials, traffic management, and the addition of vegetation as a natural barrier.

Abstract

Laboratory waste is hazardous and toxic waste (B3) that has the potential to pollute the environment if not properly treated. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of various sequences of physical, chemical, and biological methods in treating liquid waste from acid-base indicator experiments based on changes in color, pH, turbidity, and the condition of water hyacinth plants. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach through a simple experiment consisting of four namely control (P0), filtration–neutralization–phytoremediation (P1), neutralization–filtration–phytoremediation (P2), and sedimentation–precipitation–phytoremediation (P3). Observations of color, pH, turbidity, and the condition of water hyacinth plants were conduced for seven consecutive days. The results showed that treatment P2 had the highest effectiveness at 86%, followed by P1 at 71%, and P3 at 29%. Treatment P2 produced wastewater with a clearer color, neutral pH, low turbidity, and was able to maintain plant condition until the end of the observation period. Thus, the neutralization–filtration–phytoremediation sequence is the most effective method for improving the quality of wastewater from natural acid-base indicator laboratory experiments.

Abstract

Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) was one of the renewable energy technologies that utilizes sunlight as an energy source. The main component that plays a very important role in this system was dye or coloring agent because the dye functions as a sensitizer that absorbs light energy and transfers electrons to the semiconductor (TiO?) so that it greatly determines the efficiency value. In this study, areca nut was used as a source of natural dyes containing anthocyanin compounds. This study aims to determine the optimum pH of the thick extract of areca nut (Areca catechu L.) as a dye sensitizer and to determine the efficiency value of DSSC from areca nut extract with variations in pH buffers of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. The method used to obtain the extract was the maceration method for 3x24 hours using 96% ethanol and to spread TiO2 on the ITO glass using the doctor blade method with a glass size of 1 cm × 1 cm. The extract yield value obtained was 25.86% from 500 g of areca nut powder. Then, the highest efficiency value was obtained at pH 1 on the third day at 0.832% with a voltage of 563 mV and a current of 85.3 ?A. Analysis of the pH 1 dye was carried out using UV-Vis, obtaining a wavelength of 452 nm with an absorbance of 1.539. The surface morphology of the TiO2 layer added with pH 1 extract using SEM showed small pores that were evenly distributed and there were cracks and there were also lumps on the surface.
