Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing symbols in a film with the aim of understanding the meaning and function of these symbols. The research method used is qualitative and refers to the theory developed by Charles Sanders Peirce. The data collection process was carried out through in-depth observation of the symbolic elements in the films that were the object of research. A qualitative approach provides the opportunity for researchers to holistically understand the context and significance of these symbols in the film narrative. Thus, this research aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the role and meaning of symbols in a cinematic context and how these symbols contribute to the audience's experience in capturing the messages and stories conveyed by films. This research was aimed to explain the symbol and meaning in Enrico Casarosa's animated film Luca (2021) and to describe the function of symbols in the film. There were five symbols found in the film; Vespa represented freedom, friendship and solidarity; Sea and land represented the zone of comfort but limited and challenging life; Umbrella represented the identity add protection; Trophy represented victory; Sea monster represented fear and prejudice.

Abstract

Discrimination is found in many places. One group in particular that is affected by oppression and discrimination is women. In response to this issue, feminism has been vocal for many years. In accordance, this research uses the feminist approach to analyze the various forms of discrimination experienced by female characters in Moxie and the actions taken by them to fight this inequality. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The data source used comes from a film by Amy Poehler, Moxie (2021). Data were gathered by identifying instances of discrimination and the responses of female characters through screenshots and dialogues from relevant scenes. The film was viewed multiple times, and the data related to the research topic were collected and sorted before being analyzed. The analysis was conducted through a feminist lens that emphasizes gender discrimination. The results show that discrimination experienced by female students at Rockport High School occurs in various forms, namely direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, and harassment. This leads to a perception of women as weak and overlooked, exemplified by male students creating a ‘list’ that undermines women, while the school did nothing to stop it. Consequently, female characters show courage in fighting discrimination through various means, such as persuasive actions, rebellion and oration. This research has implications or raising public awareness about the importance of gender equality through media.

Abstract

Digital humanities offers a novel approach to comprehensively understand, analyze, and interpret literary texts. This study aims to elucidate the various digital humanities methods and their implications for advancing literary studies. A systematic literature review with a descriptive-analytical approach was employed to examine digital humanities methods and analytical tools within Indonesian literature. Four primary approaches were identified: (a) digital text analysis, (b) data visualization, (c) sentiment analysis and text classification, and (d) geographic mapping. Software such as Voyant Tools and AntCont facilitate textual analysis, while Tableau and Gephi open new dimensions in visualizing narrative structures and interrelations between literary elements. Machine learning methods and natural language processing libraries enable more sophisticated sentiment analysis and text classification. In contrast, ArcGIS and Neatline expand the exploration of spatial dimensions in literary works. Digital humanities methods allow for the integration of quantitative and qualitative analyses, yielding novel insights into literary text analysis. The implementation of digital humanities methods should be studied rigidly and critically, always considering the cultural and historical contexts of Indonesian literature. Digital humanities methods should also be viewed as a complement, rather than a replacement, for established conventional approaches. The integration of digital humanities methods enriches the body of knowledge in Indonesian literary studies.
