Abstract

Literary works embody writers’ view, which is undoubtedly a product of their cultural background and values. Thus, when a western writer writes about eastern themes, his values and worldview as westerner might influence his view towards the East. In the case of Australian writers writing about Indonesia, this notion proves to be problematic. Australians’ ambivalent identity as a people and the stark contrast in sociological, cultural, and historical as well as unique relation between the two countries often result in ambivalence in their view towards Indonesia. Applying postcolonial criticism, this study was endeavoured to uncover Australians’ ambivalent view towards Indonesia portrayed in three poems about Indonesia written by Australian writers. Descriptive-qualitative analysis on the poems revealed that there are ambivalences in how Australians view Indonesia which transcend the dichotomy between the Occident and the Orient. Australians see Indonesia as ‘other’ and at the same time acknowledge the differences and diversities as part of universal reality.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the image, position, and problems of Javanese female characters in the three novels of Naning Pranoto. This research is descriptive qualitative with a feminist analysis approach. The sources of data are the novels entitled Lupa Singgah di Shizi, Wajah Sebuah Vagina, and Mei Merah 1998 (Kala Arwah Berkisah) by Naning Pranoto. The research data are all lingual units in the form of sentences that contain the image, position, and problems of Javanese women in Naning Pranoto’s three novels. Data were collected using reading and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted by comparing, categorizing, presenting, and making inferences. The results of this study show that the image of women displayed in the three novels by Naning Pranoto is quite dynamic because of the social contact experienced by the characters. Each character's background also affects the image labeled towards Javanese female characters in the three novels. When viewed from the position of female characters, Javanese women in the novels are depicted as figures who are more dominated by men. This could be Naning Pranoto's intention to protest or show cynicism towards those who marginalize women. Then the next problems shown in the novel mostly start from economic problems that cause other problems to arise such as sexual violence, oppression, and marginalization.

Abstract

Literary works can depict various phenomena from various sectors, including cultural, social, political, psychological, and religious. Interestingly, in the research of literary works and religion, it is often distinguished between religion and non-religion, even though religion in literary works is universal. Therefore, this study aims to explain the dimensional aspects of religiosity in Abidah El Khalieqy's novels. The type of research is descriptive qualitative, using the religiosity theory approach by Glock and Stark. The data sources of this research are the novels Geni Jora, Mataraisa, Bait-Bait Multazam, and Santri Cengkir. Data collection uses reading and note-taking techniques, while this study uses human interest. Data validity is interrater and interrater techniques. Data analysis uses the method of comparing data, categorizing, presenting data, and making inferences. The results of this study show that religiosity in Abidah El Khalieqy's novels related to the five dimensions of Glock and Stark consists of a belief dimension, a belief practice dimension, a science dimension, an experience dimension, and an experience effect dimension. The conclusion explains that Glock and Stark's multidimensional typology of religiosity dimensions is universal in the treasures of Islamic culture. The problem presented in the novel is the problem between characters in achieving the lost dimension of religiosity, which functions as a human value and transcendence in obtaining the lost dimension in life.

Abstract

In the factuality, there are many fictional works that raise myth elements and use as reference in writing. Literary works inevitably exist in communities that have cultures and this is well acknowledged by writers who eventually receive them actively-productively. The present study is aimed at identifying these matters in modern Indonesian literature including myth sources, author’s attitudes that are hypogrammed, and myth functions. The study is conducted on five novels produced in the 2000s. Various myth stories contain life values that can be used as inspirations and culturel references in the writing of modern Indonesian novels and, simultaneously, as allegories and metaphors of life in the present time. The novels are partly set as they are in the myth stories, while partly are transformed into the life background of the present time. Even though the novels are set in the time background of the myth stories, the personalities and life philosophy of the characters reflect the life situations of the present time. The writers’ attitudes towards myths are partly continuing and augmenting the myth conventions although through the transformations of plots and characters (myth of concern), and, on the contrary, partly freeing, deviating, and rebelling (myth of freedom). In the case of rebellion to the myth conventions (Roro Jonggrang), it seems that it is due to the influences of the feminist ideas that emphasize the importance of life equalities between men and women. Women need not be always defeated or dominated by men.

Abstract

This research breaks down into two main goals: first, it aims to reveal the suicidal acts of the characters in Kathleen Glasgow's Girl in Pieces; second, it will examine the way in which the characters' suicidal narrative is constructed. The Sigmund Freud psychoanalytic theory and narratology were employed in this study to address the research objectives. Girl in Pieces, a novel by Kathleen Glasgow, serves as the data source for this qualitative investigation. This study demonstrates how the interaction between outside factors and internal conflicts illuminates the reasons behind suicide. The presence of ambivalent emotions, the impact of the superego's influence, and the regular reaction of loss to the withdrawal of libido caused the complex five characters to experience melancholy and mourning. This condition demonstrates how the novel's suicidal narrative is represented by the characters' psychological suffering. The manifestation of melancholy and its effects highlight the crucial role the superego plays in encouraging self-destructive behavior. The superego functions as a metaphorical "Thanatos," driving people toward self-destruction, including the potential for suicide, because of its punitive nature and internalized critical voice. With its intense sadness, self-loathing, and conflicting feelings about oneself, melancholia seriously jeopardizes people's wellbeing. The weight of melancholy and the destructive influence of the superego draw attention to how dangerous this mental state is.

Abstract

Poetry is one of the literary works whose emotional expression is sometimes difficult to understand. The purpose of this study is to investigate the expression of emotion and its meaning in the poem "Ruang Hijau" by Natasha Rizky. This research implements a descriptive-qualitative paradigm type. Data was obtained from a book entitled "Kamu Tidak Istimewa." This book was written by Natasha Rizky herself. Published by Elex Media Komputindo. The data was obtained by copying and documenting it in a research draft. The process of data analysis in this study involves analysis involving data texts and in-depth analysis of each data text, followed by status analysis. The data text of the book was carefully read line by line to find the essence of each narrative by numbering each line. The results show that this poem contains only two emotional expressions, namely the emotional expressions of sadness and fear. While the expressions of joy, courage, and anger are not found in the poem, Expressions of sadness mean that sadness, pain, and fatigue are experienced. Expressions of fear mean weakness in the face of pressure, while the narrative of struggle symbolizes her hope for help. It also has the meaning of loneliness and longing for help from others.

Abstract

Literary works such as poetry are no longer limited to books. In the digital age, poetry has also shifted to media that easily accessible by readers. It means that poetry is no longer consumed by specific community only. Poetry can be consumed by people from various demographics; age and gender; and can be expressed by anyone from various backgrounds through social media platforms such as Instagram. This study discussed Instagram poetry from the theoretical perspective of symbolic convergence. The data sources for this research were the poems of Alfin Rizal, analyzed qualitatively. Data was collected from the Instagram account @alfinrizalisme, supported by Alfin Rizal's poetry books. Each piece of poetry content on Alfin Rizal's Instagram was classified into smaller taxonomies to facilitate findings. The findings of this study indicated the dramatization of messages by Alfin Rizal, which impacts public response to his work. This message dramatization takes the form of poetry videos, photo manipulation, background as the setting, and illustrations as a secondary backdrop. Another finding was the construction of symbolic reality, which affects public interaction (followers) who utilize this message dramatization (in the form of Instagram posts with poetry content) to re-communicate to the public through other social media platforms.

Abstract

Hypocrisy in literature often reflects the complexity of human nature as well as broader social dynamics, providing critical insight into culture and social structure. This research aims to identify human nature and broader social dynamics, and describe hypocrisy in the short story "Akhirnya Kita Semua Menjadi Maling" by Zaidinoor. The research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. This research uses a text study with a content analysis method which focuses on discussing the content of written or printed information in the media. Content analysis is used to examine data in order to gain an understanding and present facts objectively. The content used in this research is a book of short stories entitled Cerpen Pilihan Kompas 2021. The research object is the hypocrisy depicted by the author through the story. This short story shows that hypocrisy is not only a reflection of individual character but also a consequence of broader social conditions. Social injustice and poverty contribute to moral decline, illustrating how society compromises moral values in the face of economic pressures and injustice. The findings show that hypocrisy is not only a reflection of individual character. It is also a consequence of broader social dynamics showing moral decline in society due to economic pressure and injustice.

Abstract

While Sufi literature is believed to be a powerful instrument in introducing a model of spiritual journey, the symbols in such type of literature are not always easy to digest. This paper aims to contribute to our understanding of the mystical content of Sufi literature with a particular focus on the symbolism representing the Sufism spiritual journey seen in a Sufi literary text written by Jalaluddin Rumi. This study was conducted using a semiotic approach as it embraces symbolism under its study area. Data are drawn from Rumi’s “The Philosopher and The Skipper”, a short story in a book titled “Tales from the Land of the Sufis”. Data are analyzed qualitatively ranging from collecting the data through a careful reading to coding the text for description. The findings reveal that the four main stages of the spiritual journey are consecutively symbolized by ship (shari’a), swimming (tariqah), ocean (ma’rifat), and a gift (haqiqat). Other supporting symbols include ‘Ali (salik and sublime spiritual position), philosopher (human intellect), Sam (murshid), sea voyage (suluk), the sailors (tariqah members), the skipper (khalifah), a small island (zawiyah), and empty object (zuhud). It is argued that effective and meaningful exploration of symbolism in Sufi literature might be best done through a semiotic approach.

Abstract

Violence plays a central role in Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage,  a play that offers a profound look into human nature within the framework of today's society. The play reveals the underlying brutality masked by superficial politeness, showing how civilized behaviour can quickly descend into chaos. The study therefore aims to uncover the layers of violence and show how the characters mitigate the violence inherent in their nature. Through the interactions of two couples, the study shows that beneath their polite surfaces lies a primal instinct of aggression, suggesting that humans have an innate tendency towards violence. The characters' conflicts escalate from a seemingly trivial quarrel over their children to explosive confrontations that reveal deeper frustrations and anxieties. The work highlights the fragility of social etiquette, suggesting that politeness is merely a thin layer over inherent barbarism. Ultimately, God of Carnage assumes that violence is an integral part of human nature, reinforced by societal pressures and expectations. The work invites the audience to ponder the duality of human behaviour and ask whether true decency can fully restrain our violent impulses, or whether we are fundamentally ruled by our wild instincts.
