Abstract

Subaltern reading begins with an author's view of the conditions that characterize subaltern groups. Subaltern falls within the realm of postcolonial feminism which is a form of alliance between postcolonial theory and feminism, seeks to beat back existing gender, cultural, or racial hierarchies, and rejects binary opposition to patriarchalism or colonialism's constructs of authority. This research tries to reveal the subalternity of women during colonialism in the novel Mirah dari Banda. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, namely by examining texts that contain subaltern elements. The data in this study are in the form of text sentences or dialogues that reflect subaltern women due to the domination of colonialism. The findings of this study that there are several forms of subaltern experienced by indigenous women (Mirah), including degrading dignity, sexual harassment, physical/verbal violence, obedience to the invaders, and control over others. From some of the research findings, subaltern women do not have a conceptual language to fight against colonial groups or indigenous men, and also women do not have the power to carry out resistance to the hegemonic power of groups in power.

Abstract

The exploitation of nature has led to an ecological crisis that is not only a local threat but has expanded as a global catastrophe. Literature represents the degradation of nature as well as the power relations among the oligarchic networks operating around it to build ecological awareness for the community. This descriptive-qualitative research design aims to describe the form of ecological degradation and the role of oligarchic power networks that appear in Indonesian novels. The data sources were purposively selected from Indonesian novels with ecoliteracy insights, including Api Awan Asap by Korrie Layun Rampan (2015), Jemangilak Tak Pernah Menangis by Martin Aleida (2004), and Kelomang by Qizink La Aziva (2016). In addition, data sources related to nature and the environment depicted in the three novels were also used. The data were obtained using reading and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, it was analyzed qualitatively using the perspective of literary ecology through categorization, tabulation, and inference. The results of this study concluded that (1) the forms of ecological damage presented in Indonesian novels are (a) river sedimentation and pollution, (b) coastal abrasion, and (c) forest fires. (2) Forms of natural damage occur due to exploitation actions carried out by oligarchic networks supported by government regulations and licenses. The study of ecological literary works builds awareness of the process of ecological degradation and the perpetrators of destruction that form a systemic network.

Abstract

The representation of Bugis culture in La Galigo 2 illustrates the ancient Bugis people's way of life during the Bugis kingdom in South Sulawesi. Historically, the epic La Galigo, which inspired La Galigo 2, describes Bugis culture, an indigenous culture of Indonesia. This study aims at describing the portrayal of Bugis Culture deconstruction in the novel Lagaligo 2 from the perspective of life order and beliefs. The analytical method used deconstruction theory through the perspective of Derrida. The results of the analysis show that the cultural representation of Bugis in the novel La Galigo shows several variations of ancient Bugis culture. Bissu people, who live in numerous South Sulawesi locations, can speak with God. The special ritual of the bissu people is known as the bissu dance (maggirik). The term walasuji is a gate building made of woven bamboo, used by the Bugis for traditional parties, but now walasuji is used only for weddings for the Bugis. In addition, the ancient Bugis people sprinkled bertih on visitors in the welcoming ceremony as a symbol of respect and safety. Mutual respect for the Bugis is determined by the social strata that the nobility call puang or opu. The ancient Bugis people believed in the Dewata (God), Sang Patotoqe, but over time this belief began to erode because they had embraced a particular religion. The novel La Galigo 2 implies that in central Indonesia there is a mythology about the ancient Bugis community and the richness of Indonesia’s local culture.

Abstract

Natural damage, disaster, and catastrophe can happen due to human mistreatment toward the environment. Thus, there is an urgency to treat the environment better and to sustain the comfortable living of human life. Environmental issues in recent literary works are still tightly engaged due to people's high concern and attention toward the environment’s condition. The condition of the environment has been illustrated in a novel entitled Dry written by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman (2018). Through the ecocriticism literary perspective, this study sought to reveal the conditions of nature as the impact of human mistreatment in the aspect of six concepts brought by Greg Garrard (2004). Using his theory, this study explored the environmental damage and its implication as the result of human exploration of the environment from the aspect of pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, animals, and the earth. This study employed content analysis to seek the intended objective. The findings declared that Dry successfully illustrated the existing environmental problems. The human-nature relation from the six concepts was described and exemplified very tightly that it is expected to wake the readers up to pay more concern and care toward the environment. At last, this study implied the need to analyze the human-nature relation through the specific concept of Garrard’s or other kinds of theory to sustain the environment with the ecocriticism perspective.

Abstract

Violence against women is still a hot issue in society and continues to receive a lot of attention, especially from women and human rights observers. In addition to legalizing the rule of law for the protection and equalization of women's rights, efforts to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of gender equality in all aspects are continuing. One of them is through literary works, such as Damar Kambang by Muna Masyari (2020). Through the approach of Feminists Literary Criticism, this study attempts to investigate forms of gender violence against female characters in the novel. This research also explores the perpetrators of these crimes and the factors causing violence and suffering to these female characters. The results show that there are three forms of violence against women in the novel, namely physical violence such as beatings, slapping, and shackles; emotional violence such as swearing and betting on women in gambling; and sexual violence in the form of rapes. The violent perpetrators were the closest relatives of the victim, such as the father, future husband, husband, and brother-in-law. Patriarchal power giving full power to men, including the social environment based on patriarchal power, is suspected to be the main factor in the occurrence of these various forms of violence. In addition, the rigid customary law that places men above all else also contributes to this problem. This research shows that there are still many acts of violence against women, so this issue needs serious attention from all parties.

Abstract

Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that is written in 1925 records one of the most remarkable decades in American history. American economy “roars” in the interbellum/interwar period with the advancement of technology and the stock market but then it declined by excessive consumerism. This article seeks to identify the changes in the American economy and consumer culture as depicted in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and the subsequent depression that happened. A new historicism technique is applied to describe some major factors enabling America in the twenties to lead the world’s economy as depicted in the novel and factors ending the development. By using a content analysis technique, data in the form of excerpts from the novel are collected. The data are then analyzed following the thematic analysis principles. The result of the study points out some changes that made America in the twenties roar are the increase of middle-class people, the widespread use of technology, the development of the stock market, the affordability of automobiles, and the freedom to speak and act. The glorious decades came to an end after 1939 when the stock market crashed, consumerism escalated, credit card use expanded and banks got a “panic attack”. The implication for today’s lifestyle is mentioned.

Abstract

Discussions about masculinity, in general, will be associated with certain stereotypes of masculinity. This study aimed to describe the representation of masculinity-fatherhood in the latest Indonesian novels. This research was descriptive qualitative research using the fatherhood theory by Asy'ari and Ariyanto. Data sources were several novels entitled My Father (Not) a Liar (Tere Liye), Ayah (Andrea Hirata), Saturday with Father (Adhitya Mulya), and Father Loves Without End (Kirana Kejora). The steps of data analysis in this study used the technique stated by Miles, et al (2014: 10-12) which included collecting data by means of repeated reading of the novel manuscript and then marking/coding the data found, condensation, and categorizing, analyzing, and drawing a conclusion. The results of the research showed that there was a male role as a son, husband, or father who participated in the domestic sphere while still making or showing his masculine side who show with communication, responsibility, interaction with children, teaching methods, and supervisory roles. The conclusion was father's involvement in the parenting role was a manifestation of emotional closeness, the father's accessibility, and responsibility in various aspects. This was a form of support for men who are more pro-feminist where men can share roles in various aspects. This paternal role was also shown as a form of crossing over between masculine and feminine gender roles, which was a reaction to the hegemony of masculinity as a form of effort to eradicate the dominant father's role in a family.

Abstract

The paper argues that we can view the filmic representation of Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) as a symbolic 'empowering resistance' to injustice in forced prostitution in Asia. The analysis relies on an empowering feminist point of view throughout an investigation of film elements of narration, language use (as translated into English), and symbolization. The paper demonstrates that the resistance is based on three reasons: (1) Depictions of traumatic realities in prostitution with four factors related to India's prostitution, (2) Representation of the objectification of female bodies observed through Catherine Barry's four stages of dehumanization in prostitution, and (3) Portrayal of Gangubai as a moral character, being a virtuous leader and mother figure, which contradicts her conceived social stigmas as a 'devalued prostitute' and the underworld 'Mafia Queen of Mumbai.' Adding to the study, the symbolic analysis reveals that the representation of the color 'white' signifies the character's morality and purity, highlighting her position as an alleged victim. Furthermore, the color endorses a resisting message against prejudice against women in prostitution. The study sheds light on the social conduct of female prostitution that traumatizes women. Most importantly, it offers an alternative interpretation of the representation of a prostitute character, not as a woman in vulnerability, but as a victorious powerful feminist figure.

Abstract

This is a qualitative descriptive study with the aim to find out how paternalism works in 12  Indonesian folktales by applying Derrida’s deconstruction theory. Twelve folktales from children books that represents theme about moral ideology were chosen as the objects of this study. Data collection did by document analysis. Data analysis then conducted by doing Derrida’s deconstruction analysis as proposed by Barry that involves verbal, textual, and linguistic analysis with the aim to investigate how paternalism works and give significant meaning in the folktales. The results that the paternalism seems to explain about pure paternalisms since the ideology closely related to give explanations about father (men) who completely takes control over children and women (wife). Even though the controls seems to be considered as for good reasons, this study proves the the paternalism show limitation of freedom and also reflects autonomous violation over women and children. The paternalism explains about men domination in public and domestic institution that legalize men to have power over women and children in domestic affairs. The paternalism supports men domination in culture and social institution, that makes men have power in marital institution and make marital life as women’ purpose in life in the name of norm and value in society. The paternalism also explains boy preference in marital affairs that explained discrimination over children.
