Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a significant public health challenge, particularly among adolescent girls in foster care institutions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a peer support program integrated with Islamic and Muhammadiyah values in improving nutritional intake and hemoglobin (Hb) levels in adolescent girls at the 'Aisyiyah Nanggalo Orphanage, Padang. A quasi-experimental research design was used from September to December 2025, involving 30 respondents selected through a total sampling technique. The intervention was carried out through intensive mentoring by peer mentors who focused on nutritional education and strengthening spiritual aspects, by making health maintenance a form of worship. The results showed a significant increase in AIK knowledge (from 66.7% to 90.0% in the good category) and an increase in micronutrient consumption patterns by 12.85%, where iron intake increased from 36.05 mg to 76.05 mg. However, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test yielded a p-value of 0.590 (p > 0.05), indicating no statistically significant difference in hemoglobin levels before and after the intervention. Although it has not had a clinical impact on Hb levels in the short term, this program is practically effective in improving knowledge and discipline in daily nutritional intake. Therefore, peer mentoring based on religious values remains an important and sustainable strategy for improving the health behaviors of adolescent girls in institutional settings.

Abstract

Addressing the spiritual needs of critically ill Muslim patients is crucial to prevent spiritual distress that may occur during their treatment. Tailored interventions aligned with their beliefs can significantly alleviate spiritual distress, but there is a lack of comprehensive research in this area. This review study aimed to identify existing literature on the methods tailored to address spiritual needs for Muslim patients with critical illness who are hospitalized in critical care units according to Islamic principles and practices. This scoping review is based on the PRISMA ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist. Five electronic databases were searched: COCHRANE, ProQuest, Scopus, CINAHL, and PubMed. The keywords are used for searching, including “Islamic-based intervention” AND “spiritual nursing care” AND “Muslim patients with critical illness”. The ten included articles were analysed and appraised following the protocol of The Joanna Briggs Institute. The results revealed that the selected studies employed various methodologies, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. The review synthesized detailed descriptions of Islamic-based spiritual nursing care in critical units and categorized them into five methods: 1) prayer facilitation, 2) environmental accommodation, 3) spiritual counselling, 4) respect for Islamic practices, and 5) use of Islamic phrases. The methods outlined for delivering Islamic-based interventions provide crucial guidance on how to address the religious and cultural requirements of Muslim patients during their challenging circumstances.

Abstract

Medication administration errors continue to be a significant concern in patient safety, including among nursing professional students. This study aimed to analyze factors related to the implementation of the seven rights of medication administration among professional nursing students at Universitas Andalas. This quantitative study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach and involved 114 nursing professional students. Data were collected using questionnaires including ASPAM, and researcher-developed questionnaires were tested for validity using Pearson Correlation and reliability using Cronbach’s alpha, showing that all items are valid and reliable. Statistical analysis included univariate, bivariate, and multivariate tests, used Pearson Product-Moment correlation and multiple linear regression tests.  The findings indicated that students generally had high knowledge and motivation levels (mean= 13,44 and 47,73), along with positive attitudes (mean= 66,74), and good implementation practices (mean= 117,11). There were significant relationships between knowledge (p= 0,001), attitudes (p=0,000), and motivation (p=0,000) with implementation, and attitude identified as the most dominant factor. These findings highlight the need to strengthen patient safety attitudes through clinical learning strategies such as case studies and simulations, to improve students’ self-awareness, and to develop attitude-based interventional research to enhance the implementation of the seven rights of medication administration.
