Abstract

Depression can cause severe suffering among the elderly, with serious consequences such as suicide and even death. Depression in older people can be influenced by many factors, particularly physical health conditions and psychological challenges. Among the psychological aspects, self-compassion, which means as a kind and gentle attitude towards yourself when experiencing difficult times, can affect symptoms of depression in the elderly. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-compassion and depression in the elderly in the working area of public health centers (Puskesmas) in Padang. This study uses a non-probability sampling technique using a purposive sampling technique. The sample of this study was involved 176 elderly participants who visited the Lubuk Buaya Health Center, Padang City. Data collection adopted the Self-compassion Scale (SCS) questionnaire and depressive symptoms Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D). Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between the two variables. The results showed that the average value on the SCS questionnaire was 78.56, Min 60 and Max 99 and the average value of depressive symptoms was 30.13 with a Min value of 20 and Max 42. The results of the statistical test showed that there was a moderate or fairly strong relationship between self-compassion and depressive symptoms in the elderly with a p-value of 0.000 (P <0.005), the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) value obtained was -0.413 with the direction of the relationship between the two variables being negative (-). These findings indicate that self-compassion can be recommended as a method that contributes to the emotional well-being and reduce depression among older adults.

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is one of the chronic conditions that contributes to global morbidity and mortality, with a continuously increasing prevalence. The management of CKD through hemodialysis requires patients to perform self-care independently and effectively. Self-care is the performance or practice of individual activities to take initiative and shape their behavior in maintaining life, health, and well-being. Health care transition is the process of health changes experienced by a person involving changes in health status, role relationships, and expectations. This indicates the importance of health care transition in improving patients' independence and self-care practices. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between health care transition and self-care among patients with Chronic Kidney Disease undergoing hemodialysis at a private hospital. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional study design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a total of 126 respondents. The research instruments used were the STARx Questionnaire and the Hemodialysis Patients Self-Care Measurement Scale to assess self-care. The study was conducted from April 14 to 16, 2025. The data analysis techniques included univariate and bivariate analyses using the chi-square test. The results of the univariate analysis showed that the majority of respondents had a good level of health care transition (61.1%) and a good level of self-care (51.6%). The results of the bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between health care transition and self-care among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis at the private hospital. It is expected that health care professionals can optimize support during the health care transition process to enhance patients' independence in performing self-care.

Abstract

There are three independent predictors related to dialysis mortality rates such as adequacy, depression and poor quality of life. Intradialytic exercises are a potential strategy to increase adequacy, overcome depression and improve quality of life. This study aimed to analyse the effectiveness of intradialytic exercise in addressing adequacy, depression, and quality of life. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. The study was conducted at a hemodialysis clinic in Bali, from August to October 2020. A total of 60 samples involved in the research were selected using purposive sampling. Samples were randomly grouped into intervention (n = 30) and control (n = 30) groups. Patients in the intervention group were given intradialytic exercises for 30 minutes/day twice a week for four weeks. All patients underwent measurement of adequacy using Kt/V, depression using the Beck Depression Inventory-II and quality of life using Kidney Disease Quality of Life. Measurements were taken at baseline and after four weeks. The results showed there was a decrease in the mean depression score in patients after being given intradialytic exercise (p-value = 0.001). Intradialytic exercise significantly affects adequacy (p-value = 0.003). Regarding quality of life, this study did not find any significant effect from intradialytic exercises, but there was an increase in the average score on the mental health composite dimension. This study concludes that intradialytic exercise can be considered a therapeutic modality applied routinely in hemodialysis rooms. Apart from that, exercise is also safe, and there are no reports of side effects from exercise.

Abstract

Background: Premature infants transported from the operating room to the neonatal care unit are at high risk of hypothermia. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of infant transport mattress combined with polyethylene wraps in preventing hypothermia during neonatal transport. Methods: This quasi-experimental study used an accidental sampling method; 52 premature infants with a gestational age <37 weeks and birth weight <2500 grams were randomly allocated into two groups: 26 infants in the intervention group (transport mattress + polyethylene wrap) and 26 infants in the control group (polyethylene wrap only). Body temperatures were measured immediately before transport and upon arrival at the neonatal care unit. Data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 27.0. Results: In the intervention group, there was a statistically significant increase in body temperature before (36.5(35.0-37.1)ºC) and after transport (36.7(36.0-37.1)ºC), p=0.001, while in the control group there was a significant decrease in body temperature before (36.5(36.0-36.9)ºC) and after transport (36.0(34.0-37.0)ºC), p=0.002. Discussion: The use of an infant transport mattress, in addition to standard polyethylene wrapping, significantly improves thermal stability in premature infants during transport. Healthcare facilities are encouraged to incorporate this intervention into neonatal transport protocols to reduce the risk of hypothermia and associated complications

Abstract

The increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus among individuals of productive age requires special attention, as poor self-management can reduce overall quality of life and productivity, especially in productive age groups with work, social, and family demands, which can affect adherence to self-management. Although self-management theoretically influences quality of life, the relationship between the two is still debated by researcher. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-management and quality of life in productive-age type 2 diabetes. The study used a cross-sectional design conducted from December 2024 to June 2025. The study population was 132 productive-age type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, with a sample size of 63 respondents selected through a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were the Revised Version of Diabetes Quality of Life Instrument (DQoL) to assess quality of life and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) to assess self-management. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately. The results showed that more than half of respondents (63.5%) had a high quality of life and more than half (52.4%) had good self-management. Statistical tests using chi-square showed a p value = 0.017 (p < 0.05), which means there is a significant relationship between self-management and quality of life. These results indicate that the better the self-management, the higher the quality of life of productive-age type 2 diabetes patients. Therefore, it is recommended that health workers can intervene in diabetes management by paying attention to psychosocial aspects, including coping strategies, education for the social environment, and counseling to reduce the emotional burden on patients.

Abstract

Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is one of the most common complications of hemodialysis therapy experienced by hemodialysis patients, with a prevalence of 8–40%. IDH carries important clinical consequences, including reduced dialysis adequacy and interruption of treatment sessions. Several factors are known increase the occurrence of IDH. This study aimed to identify risk factors influencing the occurrence of intradialytic hypotension in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in the hemodialysis unit of a government hospital in Padang City. The sampling technique was purposive sampling with a sample size of 104 respondents with inclusion and exclusion criteria, between April and May 2025. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test and the Mann-Whitney U test. The results showed that gender, dialysate temperature, and meals during hemodialysis were not associated with intradialytic hypotension (p > 0.05). However, hemoglobin and Interdialytic Weight Gain (IDWG) were related to the occurrence of intradialytic hypotension (p < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, nurses can monitor and evaluate anemia status and IDWG, which can influence the incidence of intradialytic hypotension. The role of nurses in improving dietary compliance and fluid restriction is crucial in preventing intradialytic hypotension.
