Abstract

This study analyzes the framing of Detik.com’s news coverage on Ustadz Hanan Attaki’s preaching before and after joining Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis method, this research highlights changes in news construction related to Ustadz Hanan Attaki’s preaching in East Java. This qualitative study employs content analysis techniques, examining the themes of the news, interviews with sources, and reported events. Data were collected from Detik.com news articles during two periods: before and after Hanan Attaki joined NU. The framing analysis includes four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendation.The findings show that before joining NU, Detik.com’s news coverage tended to be neutral, with some sympathy towards Hanan Attaki, receiving negative responses from some Nahdlatul Ulama figures. After joining NU, the framing of the news changed, showing increased support and acceptance from NU figures and the community.

Abstract

This study examines how the Islamic missionary message about the concept of destiny is constructed by Ustadz Hanan Attaki in his lecture entitled "The Secret to Changing Destiny: Soulmate, Fortune, Success" at the Sharing Time event in Samarinda, April 27, 2025. Unlike previous studies that tend to understand destiny within a normative and theological framework, this study offers novelty by examining destiny literacy as a psychospiritual aspect of the millennial generation through the perspective of missionary framing. The method used is qualitative with content analysis, utilizing Robert Entman's framing theory. The results show that Ustadz Hanan frames destiny as a dynamic and transformative spiritual space, not a static provision that negates human effort. The novelty of this study lies in revealing the role of missionary framing as a medium for spiritual literacy as well as psychological therapy for the millennial generation in facing identity crises in the digital era. The contribution of this research not only enriches the study of contemporary missionary communication but also provides practical implications for digital missionary strategies that are more contextual, inspiring, and socially impactful.

Abstract

The provision of compensation in da’wah (Islamic preaching) activities is not a new phenomenon; it has existed for a long time and occurs across various elements of society and religious activities. This phenomenon is evident in religious lectures delivered in both academic forums and public religious gatherings, where compensation is often given by event organizers to the ustadz or ustadzah who deliver the sermon. This qualitative study seeks to explain how Islam views the phenomenon of compensation in da’wah—commonly referred to as ujrah—from the perspective of the Arabic language, and how Muslim scholars articulate their opinions within the framework of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). The findings reveal that providing compensation or ujrah in da’wah and religious activities does not negate the sincerity (ikhlas) of the preacher, nor does it imply selling the verses of Allah for worldly gain. Rather, it serves as a form of respect and appreciation for the preacher who dedicates time and effort to teaching the community about their religion. The provision of compensation in da’wah activities reflects the principles of social exchange, in which da’wah—representing the transmission of religious values needed by society—acts as a stimulus that gives rise to compensation as a form of recognition within the social context of community life.

Abstract

Islamic da‘wah cannot be separated from the social and cultural context of the society in which it takes place. Kampung Pagelarang, Lubang Buaya, East Jakarta, is an urban community that continues to preserve local traditions in its religious life. This study aims to analyze the practice of Islamic da‘wah amid local traditions in the Kampung Pagelarang community from the perspective of Qur’anic exegesis. The research employs a qualitative method with a thematic (maudhu‘i) tafsir approach and a field study based on the living Qur’an paradigm. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders and community members, and documentation of religious activities. The findings indicate that the da‘wah model implemented is cultural and persuasive in nature, utilizing local traditions as a medium for internalizing Qur’anic values. The interpretation of da‘wah-related verses emphasizes the importance of the hikmah and mau‘izhah hasanah approaches in conveying Islamic messages within cultural diversity. This study concludes that local traditions can synergize with Islamic da‘wah as long as they do not contradict the principles of tawhid and Islamic law, and that da‘wah-oriented Qur’anic interpretation plays a strategic role in guiding the development of moderate and contextual cultural da‘wah.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine how the missionary strategy of a coffee shop called Sadar Coffee can provide benefits for all cafe employees and the surrounding community, especially RW 05 Ciganjur, by using a SWOT analysis approach and formulating how to apply, implement and evaluate the missionary strategy. The formulation of the problem in this study is how to apply strategies, implementation and evaluation of the preaching carried out by the Sadar Coffee shop to provide benefits to cafe employees and the community of RW 05 Ciganjur. The conclusion of this study is that the strategy of the Sadar cafe da'wah used to provide benefits to cafe employees and the community of RW 05 Ciganjur by means of the Sadar Sharing and Class Sadar programs. At the stage of implementing the Sadar Coffee da'wah strategy, the SWOT analysis approach is used. And implemented with the Sadar Sharing and Class Sadar programs which are filled with da'wah activities such as sharing Friday blessings, orphanages and regular weekly religious studies. As for the evaluation stage, attention must be paid to the SWOT elements such as strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats so that they can be used as learning for the future.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the representation of Islamic values in the film Titip Surat Untuk Tuhan. The focus of this research is to examine how the theme is implicitly conveyed through the film. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, which analyzes three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The analysis is conducted by identifying the representation of Islamic values within the film in order to reveal the underlying meanings embedded in its narrative. The film strongly represents Islamic values through Barthes’ three layers of meaning. At the denotative level, it portrays the daily lives of Muslims and their religious practices. At the connotative level, it conveys moral messages such as patience, sincerity, compassion, and gratitude. At the mythological level, the film constructs an ideal concept of Islamic life, where religion serves as a foundation for moral decision-making, social interaction, and views on life and death. Religious messages are delivered symbolically through scenes, characters’ emotional expressions, settings, and visual elements notably, the letter to God serves as a metaphor for human hope and prayer. Overall, the film functions not only as entertainment but also as an effective medium of Islamic preaching (dakwah), delivering spiritual messages in a humanistic and educational manner.

Abstract

Da'wah is an important activity in the life of Muslims which functions not only as a means of conveying religious teachings but also as a medium for social development within society. In the context of social and political life, the role of leaders or public officials has a significant influence on the moral, social, and religious conditions of the community. Therefore, the approach to da'wah cannot be separated from sociological studies, particularly the sociology of leadership which examines the relationship between leaders and the people they lead. This study aims to analyze the relationship between da'wah and the sociology of leadership among leaders or officials in shaping a religious and morally grounded society. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature study method by examining various scientific sources related to da'wah, sociology, and leadership from an Islamic perspective. The results of the study indicate that leaders have a strategic role in supporting the success of da'wah activities within society. Exemplary behavior, policies that support moral values, and the ability of leaders to build effective social communication can strengthen the implementation of da'wah in community life. On the other hand, leaders who lack moral integrity may hinder the effectiveness of da'wah and the development of the Muslim community. Therefore, the integration between da'wah and leadership based on Islamic values is essential to create a harmonious, just, and morally responsible society.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of exposure to TikTok content from the account @anakbukdani on followers’ purchase intention toward food products. The rapid growth of TikTok as a social media platform has encouraged the emergence of culinary content creators who influence consumer behavior through visual and persuasive content. This study employed a quantitative approach with an associative research design. The population consisted of 113,400 followers of the TikTok account @anakbukdani. A sample of 100 respondents was selected using the Slovin formula and purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS. The results showed that exposure to TikTok content has a positive and significant effect on purchase intention. The significance value obtained was 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.792, indicating that 79.2% of the variation in purchase intention is explained by exposure to TikTok content, while the remaining 20.8% is influenced by other factors outside the study. These findings confirm that the frequency, duration, and attention given to TikTok culinary content significantly contribute to increasing followers' purchase intention toward food products.

Abstract

This study examines the leadership strategies employed by a kiai in fostering student discipline at Jogonegoro Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Pesantren Jogonegoro). Using a qualitative field research approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with the kiai, boarding school administrators, and students (santri), as well as documentation analysis. The findings reveal three primary leadership strategies: (1) direct role modeling (uswah hasanah) through the kiai’s consistent presence in leading congregational prayers and religious study sessions; (2) the internalization of disciplinary values through verbal guidance delivered in religious gatherings, where discipline is framed as a spiritual obligation and an essential aspect of the ethics of seeking knowledge; and (3) a gradual mentoring system implemented by administrators through dialogue, warnings, and reporting serious violations to the kiai. The study further finds that students initially comply with regulations out of fear of punishment (ta'zir), but gradually develop voluntary obedience driven by respect and reverence for the kiai’s authority. Nevertheless, challenges remain, particularly in maintaining consistent discipline in daily routines such as the dawn (Fajr) prayer, where physical fatigue and demanding schedules tend to reduce compliance. This study contributes to the sociology of Islamic education by highlighting how charismatic religious authority, when combined with systematic structural supervision, produces a distinctive model of discipline formation within the pesantren environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between the Qur'an and the art of da'wah in the methods employed by the Walisongo in spreading Islam throughout Java. Walisongo are widely recognized as Islamic missionaries who successfully integrated Qur'anic values with local culture and artistic traditions, enabling Islam to be accepted peacefully and effectively by Javanese society. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach by examining various relevant literature on Walisongo's da'wah, Javanese arts and culture, and Qur'anic principles that served as the foundation of Islamic propagation. The findings reveal that the utilization of artistic media such as wayang (shadow puppetry), gamelan music, traditional songs, and local cultural practices constituted a da'wah strategy deeply rooted in Qur'anic values, including wisdom (hikmah), good counsel (mau'izhah hasanah), and tolerance toward local traditions as long as they did not contradict Islamic teachings. The da'wah methods of Walisongo demonstrate that art can serve as an effective medium of communication for conveying Qur'anic messages to society. Therefore, the art-based da'wah approach exemplified by the Walisongo remains relevant for contemporary pluralistic and dynamic societies.
