Abstract

This collaborative action research aimed at increasing teachers' reflective teaching through the use of mutual observation and conference among critical friends, and the writing of teaching journal. It consisted of two cycles and involved two lecturers, two senior teachers, and one junior teacher. In cycle one, mutual observation followed with conference among critical friends resulted in the teachers' more reflective attitude about their teaching performance and better relationship between senior and junior teachers. Though considered to be beneficial, mutual observation needed deeply rooted trust among colleauges that needed long time to grow and neatly arranged teaching schedule. Therefore, in the second cycle, the writing of teaching journal, which then was discussed among critical friends, was taken as alternative.

Abstract

A philosophy of an organization is the organization’s members’ way of thinking. The philosophy is part of the organization’s culture which is defined as how members give meaning to values, belief, customs, and philosophy of their organization as indicated by the members’ behavior which can differentiate that organization from others. The functions of the philosophy are to activate, to guide how to think, behave, and feel which influence the educational management practice.

Abstract

This study was intended to describe a learning model for comprehension reading in elementary school. The model implemented was problem solving strategy with IDEAL technique. The result showed that the teacher could activate students’ schemata, students could predict the content of the reading passages, identify problems and topics, explain the topics discussed, and find ideas and effect in the reading passages.

Abstract

This experimental study aimed at investigating the influence of booklet media toward students’ knowledge and attitude toward narcotics abuse. Pre-test post test design was used and the subjects were 40 students who were divided into two groups. One group received information about narcotics abuse and dangerous drugs from booklets and the other did not. Data on students’ knowledge were collected by using learning achievement test, and data on students’ attitude were taken by using Likert attitude scale. Varian analysis was used to analyze data. The result showed that independently, the students’ knowledge and attitude were not different. In pairs, in the treatment group, there was difference in students’ knowledge.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to reveal the developmental aspects of a model of vocational education as an empowering process. The subjects were santri of Pondok Pesantren Darussalam, Ciamis, West Java. Data were collected by participant observation, inteview, and document analysis. The technique of data analysis was qualitative analysis. It was found out that, in management aspect, a guide for vocational education was successfully made. The objectives of each kind of vocational education and the application of learning strategies were successfully arranged. In the evaluation and development aspects, the varied evaluation techniques, the systematized steps of evaluation, a set of evaluation formats, the criteria of the success of the program, and the formulation of follow-up activities were successfully constructed.

Abstract

Competence Based Curriculum (KBK) came along with the reformation movement which demanded democratization, decentralization, and autonomy. KBK has several characteristics, i.e.: as minimal curriculum of national standard, fun learning atmosphere, classroom based assessment, and school-based curriculum management. Prior to its implementation, schools need to sharpen their vision and mission, analyze the students’ and schools’ ability, develop syllabus, increase teachers’ ability related to learning models, equip themselves with learning facilities, and change the principals’ leadership styles.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing teenagers’ smoking frequency and analyzing the factors which encouraged them to smoke. Data were collected from 120 respondents taken randomly from one public and 2 private vocational schools. The result showed that 59.17% students were active smokers, and 67.87% smoked 1 to 3 cigarettes per day. 47.89% students smoked because of their school mates’ invitation. Other findings showed that smoking was not considered as a dangerous threat for health. These students even thought that smoking could grow courage, help solve problems, increase self confidence, serve as identity for men, and means for building social life.

Abstract

This globalized era is signified with competitions in almost all life sectors. Winning the competitions needs excellent human resources, and one of the competitive human resources is talented individuals. These talented individuals, however, needs specific education and guidance which can help them realize their talents optimally. Therefore, specific education and guidance should be given early on to facilitate them to realize their excellent talents.

Abstract

This study expost facto was intended to find effective ways of developing techers’ professionalism. Data were collected from eighty high school teachers in Ambon by using questionnaire, and analyzed by using descriptive statistics and product moment correlation. The result showed that principals’ ways of guiding teachers were sufficiently effective, but they could not be used to predict teachers’ professionalism. Principals were expected to continue creating conducive learning atmosphere for teachers and students.

Abstract

The problem studied is the working efficiency of lecturers within the organizational structure of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMIPA), State University of Malang (UM). The design used is a survey involving the lecturers of the faculty. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and inventory, and then analyzed statistically by t-test. The results show that among all the departments, student-lecturer ratio in the Department of Physics is efficient, while the ratio in the Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology is inefficient. Viewed overall, student-lecturer ratio in FMIPA UM is inefficient. Among all the departments, lecturers' load in the Departments of Physics and Biology is efficient. From the point of view of lecturers' load, the work of lecturers in FMIPA UM is inefficient.
