Abstract

Babad Praya is a classic Lombok manuscript that tells the struggle of the Sasak Praya tribe to escape the rule of Karangasem Bali. An important character in this story is Tuan Guru Bangkol. This study discusses Tuan Guru Bangkol as a representation of Sasak tribal warrior figures in Babad Praya. This study aims to describe the role of Tuan Guru in the social life of the Sasak people and focuses on the resistance of Tuan Guru Bangkol as the warlord of Praya II in 1891-1894. The main source of data for this research is the transliteration of the Babad Praya manuscript by Lalu Gde Suparman. Furthermore, in reviewing the text, descriptive qualitative research methods are used with the representation theory approach of Jacob Sumardjo and Stuart Hall. The results of this study show that Tuan Guru Bangkol played an important role in liberating the Sasak community of Lombok from the rule of Karangasem. Tuan Guru Bangkol is a representative of fighters who have a major role in the resistance of the Sasak people against Karangasem. He acted as a warlord as well as the leader of the Qadiriyah wa Naqsabandiyah tarikat.

Abstract

Manuscript Babad Awak Salira (BAS) is one of the manuscripts in Tatar Sunda that contains ethical values. One of the ethical values is contained in the pucung regarding the recommendation to maintain sibling harmony. Furthermore, the use of pupuh pucung convention in the BAS text shows an intertextual connection with the Javanese pocung form. Therefore, this paper focuses on two main issues: the system of literary conventions and the moral advice concerning sibling relationships. It seeks to answer two key questions: 1) What are the ethical values embedded in the pupuh pucung section of the BAS manuscript? And 2) To what extent does the pupuh pucung convention in BAS intersect with the Javanese pocung tradition? In line with these issues, the aim of this study is to uncover the ethical content of the pupuh pucung section in BAS and to analyze the intersection between the pupuh pucung and pocung literary conventions. This study employs a comparative descriptive-analytical method and incorporates philological approaches for the transliteration and translation of the text. The analysis reveals that the ethical content in the pupuh pucung section emphasizes the role of elder siblings within the family as stand-ins for parental figures. In terms of its literary convention, pupuh pucung in BAS tends to adopt the characteristics of the Javanese pocung form. However, the characters and values expressed remain consistent with Sundanese cultural traits. Moreover, the role of elder siblings is highlighted as one of nurturing and protecting their younger siblings, thereby fostering familial harmony.

Abstract

This study reinterprets Kaba Cindua Mato (KCM) by comparing the Hikayat Tuanku Nan Muda Pagaruyung (HTNMP) from the Leiden University Library with newly discovered data from the Kitab Salasilah Raja-Raja di Minangkabau (KSRRM). Using a narrative comparative approach, the analysis focuses on four main aspects: characters, genealogy, plot structure, and conflict. Based on this comparison, the study reveals that the core narrative in both texts remains similar, particularly regarding the conflict between the Pagaruyung Kingdom and the Sungai Ngiang Kingdom. However, there are fundamental differences in character names, genealogical backgrounds, and historical chronology, especially concerning the parents of Bundo Kandung and the father of Dang Tuanku. This reinterpretation further reinforces previous researcher’s assumptions that Kaba Cindua Mato (KCM) is not merely an oral folk tale, but also a kaba composed with a strong historical foundation rooted in the era of the Minangkabau kings from the late 15th to the early 16th century CE. The findings of this study cntribute to a deeper understanding of the meaning of Kaba Cindua Mato, while also enriching knowledge of Minangkabau history.

Abstract

In Babad Demak I, written by Raden Tumenggung Suryadi in 1835 in Java (Rasa-bahning-slireng-rat) or 1906 AD, there exists an ancient etiological legend from Boyolali Regency. This legend, which dates back to the 15th century, explains the origins of several place names, including Simo Village, Buthek River, Pepe River, and Ngaru-ngaru Village. The story is closely linked to Sunan Kudus’s journey, undertaken at the command of Sultan Bintara of the Demak Sultanate, to punish and execute Ki Ageng Kebo Kenanga in Pengging Village. These toponyms Simo Village, Buthek River, Pepe River, and Ngaru-ngaru Village can be traced along a historical route stretching from the northern part of Boyolali Regency, passing through Karanggede, Klega, Simo, Banyudana, and Pengging. This study employs the theory of etiological legends, which explores the origins of names, whether of places or people. Methodologically, it adopts an archetypal approach that integrates literary and anthropological perspectives. The archetypal approach (arche) focuses on origins, primal causes, authenticity, patterns, and fundamental models. By synthesizing literary and anthropological methodologies, this research seeks to uncover the deeper cultural and historical significance of these legends within literary texts.
