Abstract

Language selection in the context of preaching is a complex phenomenon and important to understand in religious communication. This study aims to reveal the patterns of language selection that occur in the Amanisya Qur'an Learning (AQL) Foundation community, as well as the factors that influence it. The research method used is a qualitative study with a sociolinguistic approach. Data were collected through participant observation. Data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) conclusion. The study's results showed variations in language selection between various interaction contexts, such as preaching assemblies and teaching the Qur'an. This study's results indicate that two dominant codes are used in the community, namely the Indonesian and Arabic codes. From the speech found, there is a phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing between the Indonesian (BI), Arabic (BA), and English (BING) codes. Moreover, the factors that influence language selection are (1) participants, (2) situations, (3) speech content, and (4) interaction functions. These findings provide better insight into the dynamics of communication in da'wah and can be a basis for developing more effective communication strategies in da'wah activities in society.

Abstract

Election moments always present a war of discourse as a weapon in political contestation to shape opinions. The narrative contained in a discourse is constructed by discursive strategies that can influence public perception of the election. Therefore, this study aims to (1) explain the discursive strategies used by tirto.id in conveying the campaign style reportage of Presidential Candidate Number 2 and (2) explain the historical context behind the discursive strategies used by tirto.id. This study is a qualitative descriptive study with a historical discourse analysis approach. Data collection was carried out using the listening and recording method. The data source is Instagram tirto.id about the campaign style reportage of Presidential Candidate Number 2 with the title "Citra Prabowo Dulu & Kini". The data analysis was carried out by answering a framework of questions related to five discursive strategies (Wodak, 2001:72-73). The results of the study show that the discursive strategies used are referential strategies through categorization, predication through evaluative attribution with adjectives, argumentation reinforced with topoi, perspective formation through narrative, and intensification with phrases. Meanwhile, there are 4 historical contexts found, namely the kidnapping of 98 activists and human rights violations, the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections, Prabowo's appointment as Minister of Defense in 2019, and the 2022 Philippine presidential election.

Abstract

This research is a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) study which explore how was the Christchurch shootings incident represented in The Jakarta Post (TJP) online newspaper. The study examined the linguistics aspects, discourse practice in the way they give the information to the society, and the socio-cultural that influence the news text. For the framework, this research used three stages of Three-Dimensional model from Norman Fairclough (2013) about Critical Discourse Analysis. Classification scheme, nominalizations, active and passive sentence, and modality are used in this research to examine the linguistic aspects. This research reveals that TJP had tendency to say that Christchurch incident was a terror. In the first stage, for the classification scheme, TJP mostly used the word attack as the incident’s name, used the word people as the victims and used the word gunman as the suspect. Then, in active and passive sentences, TJP mostly used passive sentence because TJP focused on the victims of the incident. In the second stage, in producing the text, journalist of TJP mostly used indirect quotation. Furthermore, TJP used online newspaper as their media to distribute the text and the target readers of TJP were Indonesia society. In the last stage, the research showed that there was influence from government toward the news text about Christchurch incident.

Abstract

The characteristic of TikTok Shop, which is one of the modern online markets, lies in the variety of types of goods sold in it. This market, in addition to providing local goods, also presents imported goods. In addition, in terms of price, TikTok Shop has a definite price tag, including the price before and after tax. This price clarity provides certainty to consumers in making purchasing decisions. It is important to note that TikTok Shop not only acts as a place for buying and selling transactions, but also as a centre for shopping experiences with an emphasis on quality customer service. In relation to market dominance, this study investigates how TikTok Shop strategizes within Pierre Bourdieu's social power framework. Pierre Bourdieu developed several analytical strategies and concepts within his theoretical framework to understand the dynamics of social life. Some of the main strategies in his study involve concepts such as habitus, capital, realm, and arena. Here are some key strategies in Pierre Bourdieu's study. With modern management, this market becomes more efficient in its operations and is able to provide a comfortable and satisfying shopping experience for consumers who prioritize quality and comfort in shopping.

Abstract

Online news media such as Kompas.com, has become a dominant source of information for the public. In this context, news becomes one of the main forms of discourse that influences public opinion and views on important issues, public figures, and socio-political dynamics. In the context of language use, discourse analysis becomes an important tool to understand how mass media, especially online media, manipulates language and rhetoric to shape public perceptions and interpretations of various issues. Critical discourse analysis, as explained by Norman Fairclough, emerges as an approach that allows us to explore layers of hidden meaning in discourse, especially in the context of ideological practices. In this case, critical discourse analysis becomes relevant when applied to news involving public figures such as Ganjar Pranowo, a politician and governor of Central Java. Online media such as Kompas.com, as a very influential media, often present news about these figures with certain choices of words, framing, and language that can shape public perception. This study focuses on the critical discourse analysis of news about Ganjar Pranowo in one of the online media news Kompas.com has important value to fill this knowledge gap. Thus, this study will explain how critical discourse analysis can be used to analyze news about public figures, such as Ganjar Pranowo, published in the online media Kompas.com.

Abstract

This study is a sociolinguistic analysis utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach. The objective is to describe the differences in how males and females express delicious tastes and review food, as well as the distinctions between formal and informal language varieties in culinary vlogs on YouTube. The data for this study were collected from six culinary vloggers: three females (Ria SW, Mgdalenaf, and Separuh Aku Lemak) and three males (Tanboy Kun, Nex Carlos, and Mamank Kuliner). The primary sources of data were three videos from each of these YouTube channels. The data were gathered using a listening and note-taking method. For data analysis, the study employed theories of language and gender proposed by Lakoff (1973), Maltz & Borker (2009), and Wardhaugh & Fuller (2015). The findings revealed notable differences in the language used by males and females when expressing delicious taste. Males tend to use the word "delicious" in a more vulgar manner, while females tend to be more polite. Additionally, men provide detailed and direct information in their food reviews, whereas women are more minimal and hesitant in their descriptions. Moreover, men frequently use informal pronouns to convey solidarity, while women opt for formal pronouns and demonstrate greater politeness when reviewing food in their culinary vlogs.

Abstract

Grounded in Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study examines an interfaith public dialogue by integrating Hyland’s metadiscourse framework and multimodal discourse analysis, with particular attention to linguistic stance-taking, spatial arrangement, and audience engagement. Framed as a conversation, the event reflects broader American discourse norms that privilege civility, authenticity, and pluralistic cooperation over institutional authority. Methodologically, the research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, incorporating corpus-based concordance data to support close textual analysis without pursuing full quantification. Drawing on visual grammar (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006) and U.S. pluralism principles (Interfaith America, 2022), the study investigates how the speakers negotiate theological disagreement not only through verbal choices but also through spatial positioning, humor, and reflexivity. The findings reveal how strategic spatial positioning, reflexive metadiscourse, and humor can soften theological tensions and foster dialogic engagement. In the analyzed event, these strategies were particularly evident in the Muslim speaker’s interactional choices, illustrating how multimodal cues mediate disagreement and build rapport. The study underscores that interfaith dialogue is co-constructed through both textual and embodied resources, offering practical insight into designing inclusive and relationally attuned interfaith encounters.

Abstract

The issue of how grammatical cohesion and coherence can influence the clarity and fluency of communication in the seminar trigger the author to conduct this research. The purpose of this study is to investigate how linguistic elements play a role in creating coherent and cohesive discourse, especially in the context of language learning by foreign speakers. The research was conducted using descriptive analysis and a qualitative approach. Data were collected from seminar videos uploaded to the YouTube channel of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. The videos were transcribed and analyzed using linguistic theory, specifically cohesion and coherence theory. Data were collected through free-listening observation, where the researcher observed and recorded language use without directly participating in the communication process. The results of the study show that grammatical cohesion in the seminar discourse was achieved through the use of conjunctions, references, substitutions, and ellipsis. Coherence was achieved through logical relationships between the ideas presented by the seminar participants, including additive and causal relationships. This analysis provides insights into the importance of cohesion and coherence in creating effective and well-understood communication among foreign language learners.
