Pesantren Reviews [E-ISSN 2964-4453], is a peer-reviewed journal (Single-blind review) published by the Sunan Doe Institute for Research and Community Service. Pesantren Review (PR) provides a scientific forum for publishing conceptual, theoretical and empirical research aimed at advancing understanding of the world of Islamic boarding school education worldwide. PR publishes insightful articles discussing issues at community interfaces and reviews on education in Islamic boarding schools. It is not tied to any particular discipline, method, or topic. Published in 2022, Pesantren Reviews is a reference journal on various indexers dedicated to exploring education dynamics in Islamic boarding schools and money issues related to religion in society. Its interdisciplinary forum captures professional insights from accounting, behavioural science, entrepreneurship, finance, management, education, social issues, science, technology, and humanities. The Pesantren Reviews is published in 2 issues a year in January and July.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the development of pesantren historiography, themes, and problems in Indonesia. The method used in this study is the historical method and research techniques using library research. The study results show that the historiography of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia has undergone three periods, namely traditional, colonial and modern historiography. The themes studied in pesantren historiography include biography, intellectual history, and socio-religious history. The problems that occur in the historiography of pesantren include the lack of effort by historians to publish their works. The solution offered is to add environmental history to enrich the historiography of the pesantren.

Abstract

The purpose of doing this research is to analyze the educational values in Surah al-Kahfi verses 60-82 and make a relationship or relevance to the educational process in Islamic boarding schools. In this study using qualitative research or library research. The reason is that the information used in this study is not in the form of numbers but in the form of data from both books and journals, all of which will be described clearly and in detail to develop an analysis of values education. In the qualitative research here, the researcher uses the library research method, which is a library research. The results of the study show that the educational values contained in surah al-Kaahf verses 60-82 are values that are include in the elements of education, namely educational goals, students, teachers, subject matter, educational methods and tools. In addition, there are also values of Islamic education in the story of Prophet Musa and Prophet Khidir in Surah al-Kahfi verses 60-82, these values include : high work ethic and never give up, patience, student;s ethic to the teacher, critical thinking, and faith value. And all the analysis obtained, if it is relevant to education in Islamic Boarding School, almost all values have applied and it is hoped that the result will be accordance with the content of surah al-Kahf verses 60-82

Abstract

This article examines the portrait of the Tuan Guru's political contestation on the island of Lombok. In connection with the Tuan Guru's political contestation in Lombok, which was introduced by TGB, by giving a good impression to the community, it created great opportunities for all Tuan Gurus to participate in political contestations. This study uses a literature review by reviewing the literature, collecting data by searching for previous research, and looking at phenomena that occur in the field. And the theory used is the theory of moral leadership (moral leadership). The results of the research that Tuan Guru in Lombok has a great opportunity to participate in political contestation, by participating in this political contest, Tuan Guru is looking for supporters in very varied ways, such as in preaching, Tuan Guru goes to villages while continuing to apply da'wah. political ones. As well as Tuan Guru in seeking support or in dealing with political contestations, always provides an understanding to the community of the importance of choosing leaders by Islamic teachings. As a result, indirectly or unconsciously, the community was moved by the da'wah given by the teacher, in finding a religious leader, so that the congregation or the community agreed to win the guru in the political contestation in Lombok.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the income and welfare of corn farmers in the context of an Islamic perspective in North Moyo District. This study used a qualitative approach by collecting data through interviews and documentation. The data obtained is related to the income of corn farmers in the sub-district which is influenced by capital, production costs, land area, selling price, and labor. Based on the research results, it was concluded that the income from corn farming in Pungkit Village, North Moyo District, reached a total cost of IDR 1,178,561,000. This income is influenced by factors such as production costs, land area, selling price, labor, and capital. The income level of corn farmers in one corn season can be seen from these factors. In the view of Islamic economics, the income of corn farmers in Pungkit Village, North Moyo District, cannot be said to be good because it involves capital production factors obtained through non-halal methods, such as loans from banks or moneylenders. Taking or borrowing money from banks or moneylenders is forbidden according to Islamic teachings as explained in the Qur'an and hadith. In terms of welfare, the majority or all corn farmers have achieved a good life (hayaatan tayyibah) and have sufficient halal sustenance. They are also able to meet the spiritual needs of their families and are satisfied with what they receive despite living in simplicity, because they are able to meet the dharuriyyat (basic needs) and hajiyat (additional needs) needs.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to improve students’ interest in learning listening skills by using song lyrics to know if there is any significant improvement during the learning process. Therefore, the methodology of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data was obtained from tests and observation. The test was used to measure students’ interest in learning listening skill by listening to song lyrics, and observation used to get additional information about the students’ reflection toward the learning activities by using song lyrics. From the result of the research, the researcher found that teaching listening through song lyrics can improve students’ interest in learning listening skills. The findings show that the students’ score in cycle 2 is higher than score test in cycle 1. The calculation leads to the results of cycle 1 which in the first cycle students’ mean score was 64,21 and in the second cycle was 94,73. This means that in cycle 1 and cycle 2, the interest of students was improved. During the learning process, the students were enthusiastic, active, and attentive in listening English words from song lyrics. Overall, the findings showed that teaching listening using song lyrics was an appropriate media to improve students’ interest in learning listening skills.

Abstract

This research study examined the students' motivations and challenges in English language learning at Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School. The research methodology employed qualitative data collection techniques, including interviews and observations, to gather in-depth information from 10 Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School students as the sample. The findings of this study reveal several key motivations expressed by the students, such as job opportunities, cultural exchange, effective communication, personal development and prospects. The research also identifies significant challenges faced by the students, including language difficulties, understanding spoken English, reading and writing, frustration and hesitation, and listening and comprehension. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that the identified motivations and challenges of students in learning English at Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School highlight the significance of addressing these factors to enhance English language acquisition. By addressing the primary motivations of students and overcoming the specific challenges they face, tailored instructional strategies could be implemented to promote learner autonomy and create a supportive learning environment, thus fostering effective English language learning at Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School.

Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of learning Al-Tibyân fi Ulûm Al-Qurân with a student-centered learning approach at the Al-Bidayah Islamic Boarding School, Jember. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique of this research used observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The data analysis used in this study is an interactive model data analysis for Miles, Huberman and Saldana namely data collection, data condensation, data presentation and drawing conclusions. In the Al-Tibyân fi Ulûm Al-Qurân learning activities at Al-Bidayah Jember Islamic Boarding School using a student-centered learning approach and collaborating between the discussion method and the lecture method. This student-centered learning approach has succeeded in creating independence in learning and enthusiasm for learning so as to create students who are independent in reading books.
