Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of mental health in modern prose literature, highlighting how contemporary narratives address the complexities of mental well-being and societal perceptions. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this research conducts a thematic analysis of selected literary works published in the 21st century, focusing on the ways authors use narrative style, character development, and symbolic imagery to represent various mental health issues. By exploring characters’ internal struggles and their interactions within societal frameworks, this study investigates how these narratives contribute to the broader discourse on mental health, challenging stereotypes and promoting empathy. This analysis also considers the impact of cultural context on the depiction of mental health, analyzing how factors such as race, gender, and social class influence characters' experiences with mental illness. Through an in-depth examination of these texts, this research aims to contribute to a greater understanding of how literature not only mirrors societal attitudes but also actively shapes readers' awareness and empathy toward mental health. This study’s findings highlight the significant role of prose literature as a platform for social reflection and emotional engagement, suggesting that contemporary narratives can facilitate more compassionate perspectives on mental well-being.

Abstract

This research explores the narrative techniques employed in contemporary social prose to reflect and critique societal norms and expectations within specific cultural contexts. By examining works from a range of modern authors, this study identifies and analyses narrative strategies such as unreliable narration, stream of consciousness, fragmented structure, and shifting perspectives. These techniques are increasingly used to highlight social issues, challenge conventional values, and deepen readers' understanding of diverse cultural experiences. Through close readings of selected texts, this paper investigates how these narrative devices enable authors to subtly subvert or directly question prevailing ideologies, offering alternative viewpoints and fostering empathy. This research also considers the impact of regional influences on narrative choices, examining how distinct cultural and social elements shape storytelling methods and thematic focus. By shedding light on these narrative approaches, this study contributes to an understanding of how contemporary social prose functions as a dynamic space for cultural critique and dialogue, reflecting the complexities of modern society.

Abstract

This article explores ideological representation in Eka Kurniawan’s short story collection Corat-coret di Toilet using Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony. The study aims to examine how dominant and subaltern ideologies are contested and negotiated within the selected stories. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research focuses on four short stories that exhibit significant ideological formations: "Doodling in the Toilet," "The Beauty Who Can’t Go Out at Night," "Peter Pan," and "The Capture of the Little Bread Thief." The findings reveal the presence of dominant ideologies such as idealism, feudalism, and capitalism, while the subaltern ideologies attempting negotiation include democracy, humanism, liberalism, and nationalism. Each story presents ideological resistance, yet the talks ultimately fail due to the persistence of dominant power. In Gramscian terms, the hegemony depicted in these narratives aligns with minimal hegemony, where consensus between rulers and the ruled is absent. The study also concludes that Eka Kurniawan, as an organic intellectual, fails to create a transformative ideological shift. Instead, the stories illustrate ongoing struggles without resolution. This research contributes to the understanding of literature as a site of ideological conflict and suggests that future studies examine other dimensions of Gramsci’s hegemony within Indonesian literary texts.
