Abstract

This study explores the application of figurative language in the Folklore album by Taylor Swift and examine its relevance to language and literature education. The objective is to determine the kinds and interpretations of figurative expressions within selected tracks and to analyze how they can be utilized in academic settings. Adopting the descriptive qualittaive approach, the researchers examined seven songs from the album: My Tears Ricochet, Cardigan, The 1, Illicit Affairs, Invisible String, Exile, and August. The lyrics were sourced from official lyric websites and assessed according to categories of figurative language, including metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, irony, and allusion. Results indicate that metaphor appears as the most frequently used device. The figurative elements in the songs successfully communicate deep emotions and personal stories, enhancing the emotional and literary engagement of listeners. In addition, the study emphasizes the educational value of incorporating popular song lyrics to foster students critical analysis, emotional awareness, and interpretative abilities. Abstract

Students often face challenges in reading comprehension, such as distinguishing main ideas and supporting details, connecting topics and background knowledge in the text, and concluding the contents of the reading. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether there is a relationship between students’ critical thinking ability and their reading comprehension performance. Using a quantitative correlational research design, the research involved 25 eleventh-grade students from SMAN 1 Jiwan, selected through cluster random sampling. To measure the ability of both variables, the critical thinking instrument used was the critical thinking questionnaire by Jie et al., while the reading comprehension instrument was a collection of validated questions that are arranged based on learning objectives in the classroom. The results showed the not statistically significant relationship between critical thinking and reading comprehension (sig. 0.184), although there was a tendency for a weak positive correlation (r = 0.274). This may be due to an imbalance between critical thinking and reading comprehension skills, limited language and basic linguistic skills, and a lack of practice in applying critical thinking in reading. Therefore, the application of critical thinking in reading comprehension activities is needed, and the development of students' language skills is needed in EFL learning.

Abstract

This study explores the organizational strategies used by undergraduate management students in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course and examines how English language proficiency influences their academic writing. Effective organization is critical for clear communication in both academic and professional management contexts, yet many students—especially those in ESL/EFL environments—struggle with structuring their ideas due to limited language skills and unfamiliarity with academic conventions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzed students’ written assignments to identify common patterns and evaluate their use of organizational techniques. The findings reveal that students frequently employed three main strategies: chronological order, spatial/classification, and compare and contrast. Many also combined multiple strategies to better align their structure with the content and purpose of their reports. These patterns reflect students’ growing awareness of academic writing expectations and their attempts to improve coherence and clarity in English. The study highlights the importance of integrating writing instruction into management curricula, particularly focusing on teaching flexible, discipline-specific organizational methods. Enhanced support in this area can significantly improve students’ writing performance and better prepare them for future professional roles. Further research could explore how these skills develop over time and compare strategy use across academic disciplines.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of boarding school management in improving the economic independence of students through an agribusiness entrepreneurship program at the At-Tadzkir Islamic Boarding School in Majalengka. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data was collected through in-depth interviews with the boarding school leader (K.H. Didin Misbahuddin), students, and teachers, as well as observation and documentation. The findings show that the management applies structured and organized management strategies (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling) to integrate agribusiness entrepreneurship into the boarding school curriculum. This implementation not only equips students with practical business skills but also fosters independence, confidence, and responsibility. This study emphasizes that a holistic and collaborative managerial approach by pesantren caregivers can be an effective model for empowering students economically.
