Abstract

Parenting in the digital era presents complex challenges that require culturally sensitive approaches, particularly for Muslim families striving to balance religious values with modern realities. This qualitative study explores how Islamic counseling addresses contemporary parenting dilemmas, including digital addiction, moral decline, generational religious gaps, and mental health concerns. Employing a phenomenological design, the research conducted semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 15 Muslim parents and 8 Islamic counselors, selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns and solutions grounded in Islamic principles. Findings reveal that Islamic counseling effectively bridges traditional teachings with modern challenges through approaches such as Quranic time management, prophetic storytelling, and integrated spiritual-psychological techniques. Notably, 80% of parents reported behavioral improvements in their children after implementing structured Islamic routines. The study highlights the adaptability of faith-based counseling while emphasizing the need for greater paternal involvement in religious upbringing. These results align with existing literature on Islamic parenting while introducing novel insights, such as parents' preference for brief "micro-counseling" sessions over traditional formats. Practical implications include the development of Islamic digital parenting workshops, father engagement programs, and school-based counseling initiatives. The research contributes to the growing field of Islamic psychology by demonstrating how faith-based approaches can enhance family resilience in multicultural contexts. Future studies should expand to diverse demographics and examine long-term outcomes of these interventions.

Abstract

The dynamics of parent-child relationships are deeply influenced by cultural and spiritual values, particularly in Muslim families where Islamic teachings significantly shape interpersonal interactions. This study explores the role of Islamic spirituality in enhancing parent-child relationships, drawing insights from the lived experiences of Muslim counselors. The primary objective is to examine how Islamic spiritual principles—such as tawakkul (trust in God), shukr (gratitude), and sabr (patience)—are integrated into parenting approaches and how these influence emotional bonding and communication within the family. Employing a qualitative phenomenological method, the study involved in-depth semi-structured interviews with 15 Muslim counselors in Indonesia and Malaysia who have professional experience in family and child counseling. Thematic analysis revealed that Islamic spirituality fosters mutual respect, emotional warmth, and moral development in parent-child interactions. Counselors emphasized that integrating religious values into parenting not only supports children's behavioral and emotional regulation but also strengthens parental resilience and empathy. These findings align with and extend prior research on spiritual attachment theory and religious coping strategies in family dynamics. The study contributes to a nuanced understanding of culturally embedded parenting frameworks and offers practical implications for counseling practices by promoting the inclusion of faith-based approaches. Future research is recommended to explore longitudinal impacts of spiritual parenting in diverse Muslim contexts and to develop intervention models integrating Islamic spiritual values in family counseling.

Abstract

Parenting styles significantly influence child development, yet Muslim parents often struggle to balance Islamic disciplinary principles with compassionate child-rearing. This exploratory mixed-methods study examines how Islamic parenting styles integrate discipline and compassion, and their impact on child outcomes. Data was collected from 200 Muslim parents in Indonesia and Malaysia through surveys (adapted Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire) and in-depth interviews with 30 participants. Quantitative analysis revealed three dominant parenting styles: authoritative Islamic (62%), authoritarian (28%), and permissive (10%). The authoritative Islamic style showed the strongest positive correlations with children's emotional regulation (r = 0.53, p < 0.01), religiosity (M = 4.2/5), and parent-child communication (M = 4.5/5). Qualitative themes highlighted "Discipline with Mercy" through Qur'anic guidance and Prophetic examples, though cultural misinterpretations led some parents toward excessive strictness. Findings align with Keshavarzi and Haque's (2013) adab-based parenting model while challenging universal applications of Western parenting theories (Darling & Steinberg, 1993). The study underscores the effectiveness of Sunnah-inspired balanced parenting and identifies gaps in culturally adapted Islamic parenting education. Practical implications include developing faith-based parenting programs that integrate psychological insights with Islamic principles. Future research should employ longitudinal designs to assess long-term child outcomes across diverse Muslim communities.

Abstract

The stability and cohesion of family structures within Muslim communities are increasingly challenged by modern societal changes, including globalization, shifting gender roles, and declining religious engagement. Islamic counseling, which integrates spiritual and cultural values rooted in the Qur'an and Hadith, offers a potentially effective framework to reinforce familial bonds. This study explores the lived experiences of Muslim parents who have participated in Islamic counseling interventions aimed at strengthening family relationships. Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in a phenomenological approach, data were collected from 12 Muslim parents in urban Indonesia through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed four key outcomes of Islamic counseling: (1) the effective integration of Islamic teachings in therapy sessions, (2) improved communication within the family, (3) clarification and strengthening of parental roles, and (4) enhanced emotional and spiritual cohesion. These outcomes reflect a significant alignment between religious values and therapeutic techniques, offering a culturally congruent pathway to resolve family conflicts and reinforce unity. The findings align with previous studies emphasizing the relevance of culturally sensitive counseling practices, while also revealing new insights into clients’ perspectives. The study has important implications for counselors, educators, and policymakers in Muslim-majority contexts, suggesting the need for developing standardized, faith-based counseling models and expanding counselor training programs to include Islamic psychological frameworks. Future research should include diverse demographics and employ longitudinal methods to assess long-term impact.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how contemporary Muslim families implement Prophetic parenting principles to nurture righteous children amidst modern challenges. Against the backdrop of global concerns about moral decline and the erosion of religious values in youth, the research examines how Islamic child-rearing traditions adapt to contemporary contexts. The study addresses three key objectives: (1) identifying core Prophetic parenting principles practiced today, (2) analyzing challenges in digital-era implementation, and (3) developing an adaptive framework for Muslim families. Using phenomenological design, researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 20 Muslim parents from diverse backgrounds, selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis employed thematic analysis with NVivo 12 software, ensuring rigorous coding and interpretation. Findings reveal three central practices: role-modeling Prophetic character (85% of participants), narrative-based moral education using Quranic stories (75%), and balanced disciplinary approaches emphasizing mercy (65%). Key challenges include managing digital influences (90%) and reconciling traditional methods with modern parenting needs. The study demonstrates how parents creatively reinterpret Sunnah principles while maintaining theological authenticity, offering practical strategies like technology-integrated Islamic parenting tools. These findings contribute to Islamic family studies by bridging classical scholarship with contemporary child development research, while providing actionable insights for parents, educators, and policymakers. The research implications suggest developing community-based parenting programs and revising Islamic education curricula to address modern challenges while preserving core values.
