Abstract

Earth-science literacy needs to be introduced at the secondary-school level because students in West Nusa Tenggara live in an environment affected by tectonic activity, earthquake hazards, and water-resource challenges. This community service program aimed to improve students’ understanding of basic geophysics, earthquake disaster mitigation, and the use of geophysical methods for identifying groundwater potential. The outreach activity was conducted on Saturday, 25 October 2025, at SMAN 1 Kuripan, West Lombok Regency, and involved 67 students. The implementation method consisted of school coordination, preparation of learning materials, interactive presentations, discussion of disaster experiences, earthquake-mitigation simulation, and participatory evaluation through observation, question-and-answer sessions, and teacher feedback. The results indicate that students gained a clearer understanding of the relationship between earth processes, subsurface structures, seismic-wave propagation, disaster preparedness, and the application of electrical-resistivity methods to support groundwater exploration in an area affected by seasonal drought. Student enthusiasm was evident from active discussion, questions related to the 2018 Lombok earthquake, and interest in geoscience study pathways. This activity demonstrates that locally contextualized geophysics outreach can serve as an effective educational strategy for strengthening earth-science literacy, improving disaster-awareness culture, and introducing the role of physics in solving environmental problems.

Abstract

Hand-drawn batik is an Indonesian cultural heritage with aesthetic, philosophical, and economic value, yet it faces the challenge of artisan regeneration at the village level. This community service program aimed to assist youth in Jerukgamping Village, Krian Subdistrict, Sidoarjo Regency, in mastering basic hand-drawn batik techniques and fostering culture-based entrepreneurial interest. The program used the Asset-Based Community Development approach through the stages of Discovery, Dream, Design, Define/Deliver, and Destiny. The activities included local asset mapping, canting and coloring practice, strengthening understanding of motif values, introducing a simple business plan, and assisting product documentation and digital marketing. The results showed that the youth participants were able to recognize batik as a cultural product with economic value, understand the basic stages of hand-drawn batik production, produce initial works, and begin preparing product portfolios for promotion. The program also strengthened collaboration among youth, local artisans, village officials, and the higher education institution. Therefore, hand-drawn batik assistance can serve as a youth empowerment model that connects cultural preservation with the strengthening of the local creative economy.

Abstract

Toddler nutrition problems in rural areas require affordable, practical, and community-sustained interventions. Kurung Village, Kejayan District, Pasuruan Regency has abundant moringa (Moringa oleifera) resources; however, their utilization for supplementary feeding remains limited because Posyandu cadres have not yet acquired adequate food-processing skills. This community service program aimed to empower Posyandu cadres through nutrition education and mentoring in the preparation of moringa pudding as a local-food-based supplementary feeding alternative. The program applied a participatory approach consisting of preparation and administrative approval, nutrition socialization, hands-on training, independent mentoring, monitoring, and sustainability advocacy. The results showed an increase in cadres' knowledge from an average pre-test score of 52.4 to 88.6 in the post-test, representing a gain of 36.2 points. The moringa pudding developed through the program had a soft texture, attractive color, and reduced herbal odor. Acceptability evaluation showed that 85% of the target toddlers consumed the pudding completely, 10% consumed most of it, and 5% refused it because they were ill or experiencing acute picky eating. The program also secured the commitment of the Kurung Village Government to integrate the procurement of moringa-based supplementary feeding ingredients into the health allocation of the Village Fund. This mentoring program indicates that practice-based cadre capacity building can strengthen local competence and support the sustainability of community-based nutrition interventions.
