Abstract

Since the issue upon ASEAN as a single market and production base becomes tangible, people in business field are encouraged to compete with others. According to this, the working competition will be very tight. In finding a job, they will not only compete with people in their countries but also in South East Asia. Therefore, a good communicative skill in English is needed to broad their networking and knowledge. The issue does not only affect businessmen, but also other people from other fields regarding business, for instance, education. In this case, students from economic major should prepare themselves to face the competition. Thus, the present paper aims to discuss a new curriculum design for students in faculty of economic studies in IAIN Curup through conducting R and D. The writers believe that students are better taught using PPP method which is one of the methods in Audio-lingual approach. This approach derives from behaviorist theory in which students are deductively taught English since they have low level of English proficiency. The design also generates a module which is especially designed for students in faculty of economic studies in IAIN Curup. The curriculum are in the form of syllabus employs PPP method which uses communicative function as the orientation.Keywords: R and D, Audio-lingual, behaviorist, PPP, and ESP

Abstract

The Problem-based Learning model is one of the learning models that can develop students’ critical thinking because it uses real-life problems foundation of learning activity. This research aims to describe the implementation of PBL in English language learning in developing students’ critical thinking, teacher’s role in PBL, teacher’s barriers and the impact of PBL toward students’ critical thinking. This research took place in one of the senior high school in Majalengka. The observation was conducted three times in the class of eleventh grade and then the interview was delivered to one English teacher. The result of the research reveals 1) PBL in English language learning begins with the teacher delivered the problem to the students as the foundation of learning activity and the problem was ill-structured and need deep analysis to formulate the solution; 2) teacher’s role is only as facilitator and co-investigator by providing situation to the students and help them in analysis; 3) time allocation, teacher’s capability and students’ speaking ability are the barriers in implementing PBL in English language learning; and 4) PBL develops students’ critical thinking skill, it can be seen through students characteristic which are elementary clarification, basic support, inference, advanced clarification and strategy and tactic.

Abstract

The development of digital video as one of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has crossed the threshold in the fields of education. In other words, the use of video has triggered teachers to use it in teaching and learning English. The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ learning strategies in making video project assignments conducted by students in an English for Specific Purposes class. Totally, 32 Informatics Management students who were taking English course in the ESP class at State Polytechnic of Subang. The data were collected via the questionnaire and the focus group discussion in which 8 students volunteered to participate. The results from the questionnaire analysis revealed that the students showed positive attitudes where they frequently used Cognitive strategies (x̄ = 3,98), Social strategies (x̄ = 3,84), Metacognitive strategies (x̄ = 4,15). The focus group interview revealed the ways the students employed the three strategies above, they liked to practice strategies of concepting the content, strategies of interpersonal cooperation, and strategies of recalling the concept. The study suggested that using various learning strategies in making video project assignments would benefit and the outcomes could be attributed to the proficiency level in both languages and making videos to master English that would be essential for students’ future career.Keywords: Learning Strategies, Video Project Assignments, Technology

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not Morphological Awareness Instruction could improve students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. This study also aimed to find out the students’ perception concerning the use of Morphological Awareness Instruction. A true experimental research method was applied to achieve the goal. The sample of this study was sixty students of SMPN 18 Kota Bengkulu which were chosen by using two stages of random sampling. To collect the data,a set of questionnaire and tests were used. Independent sample t-test was applied in analyzing the data. The results showed that (1) Morphological Awareness Instruction significantly improved students’ vocabulary mastery; (2) Morphological Awareness Instruction significantly improved students’ reading comprehension, and (3) there were positive perceptions of the students toward the use of Morphological Awareness Instruction in learning vocabulary and reading. Key words: Morphological Awareness Instruction, vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims at evaluating an English test as part of entrance test in STAN, a government-affiliated college in Indonesia. STAN EPT has four main sections in the test including Structure and Written Expression, Cloze Question, Error Recognition and Reading Comprehension. Using five criteria by Brown & Abeywickrama (2010), the test is evaluated in terms of its practicality, reliability, validity, washback and authenticity. The result indicated that the test has high practicability with all of questions provided in multiple choices. Some elements of reliability and validity are also covered in this test. Yet, the evaluation also showed that washback and authenticity are not covered in STAN EPT. Key words: STAN EPT, English test, test evaluation

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether 3-step-writing strategy could have a significant impact on the students 'writing results in descriptive writing and also to find out whether there is an impact of the interaction between 3-step-writing strategy on students' writing interest. The population in this study were Law Faculty students in the 2017-2018 academic year with a total of 25 students. In this study, sampling using purposive techniques that took two classes as samples and divided into two groups, namely: Experimental Group and Control Group. The Experimental Group learned to Write Descriptive by using 3-step-writing strategy. Data was collected by conducting tests (pre and post-tests) and questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed using the T Test and Two-Way Anova Test with the help of the SPSS 22 Program. It showed significant different on students` English Writing achievement from pre-test to post-test and also from experimental and control group. Students also showed great interest on English Writing of Descriptive text by applying 3-step-writing strategy. It means that 3-step-writing strategy could improve students` English writing skill and could also  empower students to learn more.

Abstract

It goes by saying that 2013 Curriculum emphasizes on the active learning and stimulates students’ high order thinking skill. Furthermore, discovery learning is one of the learning approaches which is proposed by the government to support and to construct students’ creative and critical thinking. Due to the fact that teachers’ awareness and experience in developing the learning materials and performing the discovery learning activities which encourage students to think critically and creatively is still less, this paper presents information and guidance how to construct the discovery learning-based activities which promotes high order thinking skills. Moreover, this paper limits its focus on the writing skill assessment in the senior high school. The research and development methodology was adopted in this paper. An example of simple learning activities of discovery learning-based writing assessment is provided as well. The proposed discovery learning activities cover the activities which might be done from the beginning to the end of the learning process, that is assessed in writing skill. The guidance and learning activities sample help English teachers of senior high school elaborating the discovery learning based writing assessment activities.

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the efficacy of webbing technique to help students improving their writing achievement in recount text. This research was used experimental method. The population was the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Curup Selatan in academic years 2016/2017 and 30 students were taken as the sample by using convenience sampling. The result showed that there was any significant improvement with a significant mean difference of 11.72 (t=.000) and its aspects. It was also supported the results of questionnaire which indicated webbing was useful technique to solve students’ problems in writing recount texts.These results indicated that webbing technique is effective in improving the students’ writing achievement.  Keywords:, webbing technique, writing  achievement, recount text
