Abstract

The novel "Beloved" by Toni Morrison reveals a bitter narrative of women's lives, especially through its central character, Sethe. This research aims to explore the depth of power and injustice experienced by women in a post-fear context. Using a feminist analytical approach, this research demonstrates how Sethe, as an African American woman, confronts systemic forces and a history of abuse that result in injustice in her life. Sethe's depiction as a modern heroine reveals the power of women to persevere and create meaning in difficult situations. However, his existence is also a tragic story of injustice, especially in the context of his loss of human rights and traumatic experiences. The novel highlights how Sethe and other women struggle against racial, social, and gender injustice, creating a narrative full of resistance to power structures that threaten their well-being. Analysis of language, characters, and historical context helps bring to light the complex dynamics of power and injustice in women's lives. Through this exploration, this research seeks to provide in-depth insight into the role of women in navigating a harsh world and highlight the importance of hearing their voices in historical narratives.

Abstract

Kata-Kata Kunci: kehamilan diluar nikah, edukasi seksual, konten media sosial, analisis multimodal

Abstract

Many people write about his solitude in plain words, so the content is brief. Unfortunately, writing solitude in the form of literary works, especially poetry, is longer than done in conversation. Even ‘Monolog’ by Sulaiman Djaya and ‘Situ Lembang’ by Dian Haridiana display loneliness through narrative poetry. This article will discuss solitude as anonymity, creativity, inner peace, intimacy, problem-solving, self-discovery, spirituality, loneliness, and distraction in the two lyric poetry works above and how the lyric poetry impacts the story inside. Therefore, the quantitative method of description becomes the appropriate choice for analysis. The argument is that solitude is the intimacy of the subject to gain peace and independence.

Abstract

This research aims to show how the issue of alienation is portrayed and classified in Donna Tartt’s novel The Secret History (1992). The issue of alienation in this research refers to the concept of alienation in literature that was established by Mary Horton, Nancy Gray Diaz, and Jennifer McClinton-Temple. In this research, the concept of alienation in the novel is analysed through the narrative aspects of focalization and space based on Mieke Bal’s theory of narratology. Through the narrative strategy in the novel, the main character—portrayed as the working class—who also serves as the focalizor as well as narrator is presented to express his sense of isolation and disconnection from his surroundings. This research concludes that due to his social class, the main character in the novel is presented to be alienated from his closer connections, his physical environment, and his epoch. Therefore, we argue that the portrayal of alienation in the novel represents a social class discrimination.

Abstract

Aggression, whether it is indirect, relational, or social, which is directed toward oneself can be a grave danger resulting in a drastic shift in their personality toward negative behaviors. In Kupu-Kupu Seribu Peluru, a short story in the book Cerita buat Para Kekasih by Agus Noor, we can see how the characters interact while affecting one another harmfully. This study explains how aggression works in changing a character’s personality to something they weren’t before, caused by other’s hostility toward them. The purpose of this study is to assess the phenomenon of aggression shown in the short story through literary analysis of the characterization and the narrative structure. It investigates how was the main character’s behavior before she received aggression and what happens after. The findings tell that by only accepting the aggression directed toward her without resistance, the main character alters into a disagreeable individual just as she is accused of in the later part of the story.

Abstract

The “damsel in distress” trope in literature and media has been prevalent for centuries, stereotyping young female characters as in need of rescue by male protagonists, who are often depicted as coming from a higher social class. This archetype has become deeply ingrained in societal consciousness, shaping perceptions of gender roles and social hierarchies over the course of history. Adopting critical analysis and taking feminist outlooks on gender and social class dynamics, this study examines the portrayal of Elodie, a character that deviates from the classic “damsel in distress” archetype, in the recently released Netflix film Damsel (2024). The purpose of this study is to analyze how Elodie is depicted in Damsel and to explore the way the film challenges conventional gender and social class norms in order to prove that the film breaks the damsel stereotype. Through the findings and analyses, it is apparent that Elodie’s character breaks away from traditional gender and social class expectations, presenting a more empowered depiction of female characters.

Abstract

Although there are several women in politics, there still needs to be more women who contribute to politics. The representation of women in Indonesian politics is still under 30% and ranked 7th in Southeast Asia. Mostly, it is because women are always portrayed as figures who are not qualified to take the lead. Taking the viewpoint based on their physics, women are totally different and not as strong as men and for that reason, there are perceptions that politics are only meant for males, not females. At the same time, women participants are essential and required to create women-friendly policies as the women are portrayed as individuals who are doubted to take the lead. They are considered unqualified to be in politics, and their presence is seen as a complement. The perceptions toward women that have been created have become a challenge for women in politics. In this study research, the readers will figure out the culture of the patriarchal system in Indonesia leads to stereotypes towards women that make it difficult for women to participate in politics actively. Also, this research aims to determine the treatment differences between women in the United Arab Emirates. The analysis indicated that mostly society is still stereotyping women as those who are not qualified to participate in politics is not due to the patriarchal system that puts women as subordinates. Still, it is also because of the women themselves. They already feel comfortable in a traditionalist system and tend to let men lead some projects because they think men must lead an event or activity. Mostly, women behave as someone who needs to be qualified to take the lead.

Abstract

The public's perceptions of celebrities could easily turn from loving to hating. Changes in personal life, public image, and the rapid spread of information contribute to the formation of public opinion. This study aims to analyze the public's perception of a public figure, focusing on the song ‘We Can’t Be Friends’ by Ariana Grande using qualitative methods. The objective of this research is to explain the lyrics of the song, which present the constant scrutiny the singer experienced and the criticism she received after a few controversies she had. Furthermore, this paper discusses the implications of these perceptions and their impact on relationships with fan communities. The study also includes supporting factors influencing opinions, such as the celebrity persona, cultural background, controversy, and previous work. By the end, we understand how these factors could shape public opinion, examine how community sentiment shifted, and determine the interpretation of the song.
